This didn't happen in the past and now if I send any type of attachment from work (png or zip for instance), the attachment only appears as a winmail.dat file on both my MacBook Pro running 10.7.3 and my iPhone running iOS5.1
The important thing here is the attachment is actually being set out correctly. I know this because if I pick it up using the web interface of my mail provider, the attachments are all present and correct.
Therefore the problem lies somewhere in iOS5.1 or OS10.7.3
Based on a recommendation from an AppleCare rep, I downloaded "TNEF's Enough" so I could read winmail.dat attachments from others. It won't work and when I called again, I was told AppleCare doesn't support third party apps. How do I activate it? I tried double clicking on it and nothing happened.

How do I open a "winmail.dat" attachment? I've only been using MAC since 12/11 and I still have a lot to learn!

Why do attachments rec'd on my mac (10.4.11) through aol have to be downloaded before being opened? Then you have to open a zip file or open a variety of folders before you get to the item sent. Other computers allow you to just click on the attachment and the file opens immediately.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I'm in Mail and try to open or save to my computer and then open a pdf in Preview, I get an error message -"The file “Proposal to Seattle City Light - Wolverine Study 6Mar2012.pdf” could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." This happens with all pdfs in Mail. However, if I go to email account on the Internet and download the pdf it opens no problem. This is a new problem, though I can't say if it started happening as soon as I upgraded to Lion or if it happened sometime after (definitely not before).

I launched Mail as I ordinarily do. It opened up, but the header bar was grayed out. Finally I managed to open program via Message/Go To/ Inbox, but no messages appeared in any of my mailboxes (even though I had several still in there from today). Nothing is happening, I even can't quit teh mail program.

If an email is either replied or forwarded to me I am unable to open any of the attachments from the originial messages. So unless someone forwards me an email and includes an attachment directly in their emial to me I'm not able to open any attachments. In the email this is how the attachments appear:<CBA_COMPS_5.2.12_PDF.pdf><Screen Shot 2012-05-17 at 2.10.18 PM.png>They are just text and not clickable. How can I make it so that I can open them?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using MacOSX and Mac Mail. The cub scouts send a weekly newsletter via Scouttrack. When I view this on the Mac, I cannot see any attachments; it's like they are not there at all. When I view it from Outlook on a PC, it doesn't show the little paper clip, but when I open the email, then I can see that the attachments are there.
Is there any way to get the mail application on the Mac to recognize that there are attachments in the email??
I have a mail attachement with the extension .gem, and I would like to use that attachment as the argument to a java .jar program. I've figured out how to start the java program using a shell script like this:
#!/bin/bash
java -jar /Users/geoff/Programs/program.jar $1
If I name this script program.sh and change the permissions to allow execution, I can successfully run the program by typing this in a terminal window:
./program.sh filename.gem
However, when I try to open the attachement filename.gem from mail, it won't let me use program.sh to open the attachment. The OS seems to make a distinction between a file and an application that is independent of the execute permission on the file. After doing some reading about this, I tried Automator. One of the Automator actions is to execute a shell script, so I added that action to my Automator project and typed in my command:
java -jar /Users/geoff/Programs/program.jar $1
I also changed to input from options from "stdin" to "argument". I then saved the Automator project, and was able to associate that project with the .gem file attachment from mail. The java program started, but behaved as if the $1 argument was not included. (Perhaps I just need to leave out the "$1" in my Automator command, trusting Automator to insert the argument in the proper place. If that theory is correct, my program is interpreting the text "$1" as an argument, which would be consistent with the behavior that I'm seeing.) I've seen other suggestions to use AppleScript, but it seems to me that there ought to be some simple way to do this. (I just got a Mac, by the way. I was able to do this in Windows using MIME type definitions and a .bat file. The difference is that Windows allowed me to consider program.bat as an executable, but Mac OS doesn't consider program.sh to be an executable.)
As of yesterday my Mac will no longer send or receive emails that have attachments on them. It doesn't matter the size or format of the attachment, nothing happens. It shows as Sent but it doesn't get to the recipient and I can't receive either.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhy are my attachments not showing up as attachments when recieved. They are sent from Mail as windows "friendly" - but never the less always show up inlaid in the mail. The recipient then have to ctrl clik on the documents, save them on the harddrive before being able to fx print.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am on mac laptop OSX 10.9.2 using Mail 7.2. I tried to open a "Mailer Daemon" message and it is frozen, not even open but a grey colored blank "message". (3 times)Opening up my server on the internet and deleting the offensive message "mailer daemon"Turning off the computer again.
So...as soon as I open mail, the grey "message" is open. I can click on the Mail Viewer window and have that come forward, but all is frozen.Just did it again and it hasn't changed. I am using 10.4.11. I no longer use the "Mail program" that came with my iMac. It's not that I didn't want to, but I changed to "Quest" as my server and could not get it to recognize the Apple "program/application." So, now I'm using the "Quest mail"program. My problem is that when I try to subscribe to some (just some) mailing lists or websites, when I click on "subscribe," my old mail program opens. It has my old email address so is of no use. Any ideas on how I can get my email address changed in the old "Mail," or have my new mail program open when I click on a link?
I recently bought an iMac and I have noticed within the past week that I have had to force the mail program to shut down. Otherwise if I don't force the mail program to shut down the OS will not let me put the iMac to sleep or to shut down.
View 2 Replies View Relatedsince upgrading to Lion an embedded attachment in a e-mail, jpeg or pdf will cause a recieving outlook to stop displaying the e-mail content before the atachement-icon, no mail content after the icon is displayed anymore. Mail itself shows propper content of the e-mail.

I'm having trouble with my Apple Mail program. I have a number of e-mail accounts (some with Optimum online, a g-mail, yahoo, etc.) Apple Mail has no problem at all reading and downloading any mail from any of the services. My problem is with Optimum Mail (Optonline.net). Mail refuses to send anything through that set-up. I've been on the phone for hours with Optimum and the settings are all correct. I've tried connecting directly to the cable modem and mail gets sent. This would make me believe that it is the Apple Airport Extreme router that is at fault. I've tried restarting it, re-initializing it and setting it up again and the problem continues. All my Optimum mail is picked up and can be read but it will not send anything through Optimum. It asks if I want to send it through another server (like g-mail or yahoo) and if I pick yes the mail sends.
It happens on all my computers a G-3 and pre Intel iMac G-5 on Tiger and my Macbook on Leopard.
Anyone else hear of this problem? Both Apple support and Optimum online say they have never heard of it. Talking for hours with their tech departments have found no solutions.
When I double click on an file that shows up in the downloads window it will not open anymore. I made a brand new user and tried it, same thing continues to happen.
