ITunes For Mac :: Tries To Add Entire Folder To Library
Aug 26, 2014
I'm having a problem with adding files to iTunes. When I try to add a file to my iTunes library, it will not let me go into the folder to select individual files. It tries to add the enter folder. For example, I have all my music on an external drive. When I click "Add to Library" it brings up the hard dive. When I try to click the hard drive, it does not show me any other folders. It just tries to add the entire drive. I've moved a folder of one musical artist to my desktop, but it does the same thing. Tries to add the entire folder. It won't let me delve deeper and select albums or individual songs.

My iTunes library has apparently filled my entire iMac (according to the computer I have over 97 days' worth of music). I would like to know 1) how to properly save my iTunes library to an external hard drive and 2) how to use iTunes so that it uses the library on the external drive.

With the update to OS-X 10.7.3 did anyone lose the entire Library folder from their user directory? I didn't notice until I started working on the installation of an application (beta version) and found the my entire ~/Library/ folder gone, all 57+ GBytes of it. I'm restoring it from Time Machine two days ago, but I wonder what happened with the update to completely remove it.

I have my iTunes library stored on an external hard drive when using with my MacBook. I've just bought a Mac Mini and want to copy the entire collection over to my Mini's hard drive, but using File > Library > Organise Library and Consolidate files doesn't appear to work. Most files are copied, but some, randomly, aren't. Most of my purchased songs don't get copied either. What's the best way to ensure all of my music files are copied over to my HD so I can copy to my Mini?

I use iTunes a lot in a classroom environment. Usually I play most songs from playlists. But every now and then I need to move to a song quickly that is not in that current playlist. My habit is to enter the new song's title in the search bar, but that doesn't work because if I am currently playing a playlist, the search bar only searches that current play list. Then I have to select the total music library and search from that level.
is there a fast way to search the entire music library for a song while a playlist is currently selected in iTunes?

I accidentally deleted my entire iTunes library. What happened was that I intended to delete all the songs from just one artist but for some reason, my iTunes deleted everything in my library which I have collected over the past 6 years. It gets worse because:
1 - I can't get my files back from my iPod because it died about a year ago
2 - I agreed to move all files to my recycle bin (at that point I had no idea I was deleting my entire library) and when I went to check the bin, none of the files were there
3 - I attempted a system restore but all it did was to return my folders with no files in them
4 - I tried to use a couple of undelete files software but none of them found the deleted files.
I'm really desperate to get my files back.

I am on a Mac running iTunes 10.6.1.I need an easy way to scan the entire library looking for unconected tunes.I discovered three by accident and my guess is there are others. My library currently consists of almost 800 albums so there are possibly close to 5000 tunes, too many to check one by one.I saw references to Windows based tools but I couldn't find anything for the Mac. I am betting something is out there but I need a pointer.

The music library on my desktop itunes program has all my songs. But I just want some of those songs -- which are contained in a itunes playlist I created -- to be loaded onto my iphone. How can I load only a particular set of songs, or a playlist of songs, onto my phone and not my entire music library?

I run a college internet-only radio station. The system we use works from the iTunes library. Each week, I download music from several music distributors, an average of 20 albums per week. Some of these downloads do not come with album artwork attached. Of those, some have artwork available through the iTunes store.
The catch is that each time I tell iTunes to get album artwork, it starts at the top of its list and works through the (as of today) 1,817 albums. It meticulously checks albums for which it already has artwork as well as albums for which it has already failed to find artwork on previous occassions. This process takes about 45 minutes. I've searched the options, but haven't found a "Check for album artwork only on recent additions" option.

i have a Western Digital MyBook Studio external hard drive on which i keep my music and media in general. My music alone takes up around 160gb so i needed an external drive.
I've changed the default iTunes Library folder to one in my external drive and have let iTunes organize everything inside it and it all works well... the thing is though that when i launch iTunes and the external HD is not detected (power failure for example, no power for the HD but my macbook pro works fine) it defaults to the folder it had set at first, the Music folder in my Home folder.
Is there any way i can stop it from doing that?

I recently cancelled my iTunes match subscription. When I did, i lost approximately 2,000 songs from my library, however i found them in the iTunes folder. For some reason iTunes no longer sees the songs. How can i get the lost songs back into iTunes? I don't know exactly which songs were lost and my total library is over 13,000 songs.

I've just had to do a complete restore of my iMac. It was acting very oddly, so I chose to restore the Applications and the System Settings manually, especially as a full restore did not fix the problem.
In the process, I did not restore my Music folder and, to boot, the Time Machine backup files seem to have gone invisible to Time Machine as I cannot see them in Time Machine. I can, however, see them in the finder and have been able to restore most everything from the backups. I have been able to bring the iTunes file onto the desktop, but want to put it in the Music folder shown in the panel on the LHS of the Finder window. The system will not permit me to put it there, or am I missing something? iTunes runs just fine from the file, but I'd like it to be in the right place, and not on my Desktop. This is all with the latest Yosemite.

- I pasted a folder (named mymusic) full of music files (mp3) and movie files, to my Mac Book Pro (MBP).
- I opened iTunes for the fiirst time and asked iTunes to search for media files and orgnaized the library with "Reorganized files int the folder iTunes Media".
- So Now I have two folders containig the same files. One is in the iTunes Media Folder, and the other one is the original folder (mymusic).
Can I delete the original 'mymusic' folder? If I delete mymusic folder, will all my music remains safe in the iTunes Media folder? If Yes, then what about the artwork (album cover image)? I put album covers images in mymusic folder. If I delete the folder, will the cover image stays safely in iTunes Media folder?

I'm sure many people, like me, have much of their video library and collection in various formats other than m4v/mp4. I was wondering if anyone has made the effort to actually convert their entire library of videos into m4v format so that it's all apple hardware compatible or if you have duplicates of everything to preserve high quality 'originals' and lower quality iphone/ipod conversions etc.
Just a simple question of how you manage your video library I suppose. I also wonder if anyone even uses iTunes to manage their videos? It seems with the increasing number of apple devices pilfering our lives (or those of us that choose to let them pilfer our lives at least) could probably do with some simplification of formats.

When you consolidate your itunes library does it actually move all your files to one folder or does it just make a copy or reference them? Because my itunes media is scattered throughout my computer and an external hard drive and I'd like to move it all to one spot.

Was editing a photo in iPhoto just a few minutes ago and BOOM, I get the "you must restart your computer by holding down the button" prompt and the screen is locked. So I hold it down and restart. Open back up iPhoto after restart and it's like I'm starting it for the first time. It shows ZERO photos. What happened!?!?!
I seek my photos from an external hard drive and the file is still there so how do I reimport them into iPhoto and why did this happen?
I have the Mini iPhoto Library icon which is 70 gigs in size, which has not only my photos in it, but also my preferences. How do I get iPhoto up and working again? Do I just have to tell iPhoto where to look for my library? If so, I forgot how to do this.

I have my iTunes Library Folder on my external hard drive which is a WD MyBook Live.I did this to save room on my macbook's hard drive. It is great and I successfully moved the folder over and saved tons of space on my hard drive. The problem I'm having is that each time I turn on my computer and open iTunes for the first time it asks me to manually locate the iTunes Library Folder.I have gone in and reset and updated the physical location of the folder to the external hard drive but it still makes me go and manually find it before it will open.Once I do that it works fantastic.

Pretty much my entire music library is stored in FLAC format, this is something that itunes does not support, so does anybody know of a program like itunes that will file and move around my FLAC files for me.At the moment I am playing them through VLC, but that isn't too practical.

Watch out in Time Machine after you install and upgrade your iPhoto '09 library. My Time Machine just did a fresh backup of it....all 40GB of it! Basically it gave me the same Node require deep traversal on just the iPhoto Library....so I'm guessing it had something to do with the upgrade.
