Applications :: Store ITunes Songs On External HD Accessed By Two Macs?

Mar 13, 2009

I want to know if this is possible and, if so, how to do it.

Currently, my iMac's HD is overloaded by my 220GB collection (mostly podcasts).

My idea is to have the iTunes collection on an external hard disk (e.g. a Western Digital Passport 320GB).

When connected to the iMac, iTunes on the iMac reads the MP3's from the external disk.

Then, when I'm on the road with my MacBookPro, the MBP's iTunes would read from the same external hard disk.

A problem could be how to make the second MBP recognize any updates to the iTunes list that has changed when used with the iMac since the last hookup.

ITunes :: Crashing When Accessed From IPad Via Remote App

Apr 28, 2012

I'm having an issue where iTunes on my iMac crashes regularly when being accessed via the Remote app on my iPad.

I use the Remote app to control iTunes running on my iMac upstairs, and stream the music to my AppleTV downstairs. Lately, I'll launch the Remote app, it will start to display my iTunes library or what's currently playing, and then lose the connection to iTunes. When I go to my iMac, iTunes has crashed.

This seems to be random, or at least I can't see any pattern. It doesn't happen every time I launch the Remote app, but it does happen regularly now, and sometimes several times in a row.

I don't have a problem with iTunes crashing under any other circumstance. It seems like an iTunes bug. iMac running 10.7.3 iPad with iOS 5.1 iTunes version 10.6.1 Apple TV 2 with latest software Latest version of the Remote app

OS X :: Couldn't My Mac Be Accessed Via Airport?

Sep 20, 2010

Airport is turned on my default and I think that is totally unsafe. I didn't use a strong password when I first got my Mac, and that part is my fault. But what is to keep someone from accessing my computer wirelessly through Airport when it was turned on and I had that weak password? And even if a person didn't want to access my computer, if their computer was infected with malware or whatever, what would keep an automated program from guessing the password and connecting to my computer or anyone else's?

MacBook Pro :: Server Needs To Be Accessed By Both Mac And PCs?

Jan 14, 2010

I have both Macbook Pro and MacMini (and a couple of PCs). MacMini has multiple external HDDs attached to it, and it is serving as our home server. Since the server needs to be accessed by both Mac and PCs, I've set up the sharing through SMB.

Recently, I bought LinkSys Dualband N Router (320N), and was hoping to get the maximum transfer speed, but it's not so easy to archive around 12-13MB/s speed over my home network.

Scenario 1 (MBP - Wireless N / MacMini - Gigabit Ethernet)
Data on MacMini's external HDD: max 5-6MB/s (bad)
Data on MacMini's own HDD: max 13MB/s (very good)

Scenario 2 (MBP - Wireless N / MacMini - also on Wireless N)
Data on MacMini's external HDD: max 2.5MB/s (extremely bad)
Data on MacMini's own HDD: max 5MB/s (bad)

Question 1: what can I do to pull 13MB/s from MacMini's external HDDs? They are connected via USB 2.0 or Firewire, so the connection itself shouldn't be a problem.

Question 2: why is it that when both are on the same wireless N (5Ghz) the speed decreases by 3 folds? When I look at the network monitor, MBP is at 300Mbps and MacMini is at 270Mbps.

Can anybody help me with these? I searched all over but couldn't find any solution that I was looking for.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Backup Disk Image...could Not Be Accessed

Apr 26, 2012

The following error message just popped up: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Robert's Office iMac (2).sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)." I'm running a late 2009 iMac; upgraded to Lion about a week ago. It seems to have done the Time Machine backups fine for the last week. The only other recent change was to reset my iCloud account so I could sync with my iPhone.

OS X Mavericks :: None Of USB Flash Drives Can Be Accessed In Finder

Aug 25, 2014

First the specs from "About this Mac":

MacBook Pro "13-inch, Late 2011", 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 // RAM= 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Mac OS X 10.9.4 "Mavericks" (13E28)

The problem:

None of my USB Flash drives are accessible in Finder.

The drives do technically "Mount" properly - they show up in Disk Utility, with the "Unmount" & "Eject" buttons available (indicating it's mounted), and they're mounted to the path /Volumes/<Disk Name>.  Also, the disks show up in the Finder Sidebar with the correct name etc.

However, If I click on the Finder icon for the drive, the window flashes white for a millisecond and then reverts back to whatever the window showed before (eg. my home folder's contents).  Finder will not access them.  This has occurred on 3 different USB Flash drives (all of the ones I own!), which are formatted for ye olde windoze, FAT16 or FAT32 (aka. MS-DOS).

The drives operate perfectly normally on an iMac running OS X 10.8.5 (accessible in Finder). I was able to copy files to/from & list the contents of the Flash drives normally.

In Disk Util. I can Unmount & re-mount without error.  If I unplug the disk I get the expected "This disk was not unmounted properly" banner.  Eject via DiskUtil appears to work properly without error, causing the disk to vanish from Disk Utility (as expected).

The directory /Volumes does not show the drive's directory (just "Macintosh HD") - in fact the first time I list /Volumes/ after plugging in a drive, it appears to show some folder in /Volumes that is quickly removed (kind of scrolls-up into itself) as soon as the /Volumes directory is listed - was it my drive playing hide-and-seek??

The Eject button / option (in right-click menu) is not available in the Finder.

If I use Finder > Go To Folder… and type in the "Mount Point" from Disk Utility, I get a "folder not found" error.

In DiskUtil, if I right-click the drive name and select Reveal In Finder…, strangely the folder will actually show up in /Volumes, and I can open the folder and view the drive contents (sometimes I have to Reveal it twice for it to work)!  I was also able to create a new folder after this (which did show up on the iMac as well).  However, if I tried to copy and files to the Flash drive, I get either

The operation can’t be completed because one or more required items can’t be found. (Error code -43)

(when I try to drag a file into the newly created folder on the Flash drive), or

The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8058).

(if I drop a file on the Flash drive's root directory, or try to copy a file form the Flash drive to my computer).

I have tried DiskUtil/"Repair Disk" on the flash drives, which doesn't show any errors or warnings (they appear to be ok - again they work fine on another Mac).

I also did a "Repair Permissions" on my MacBook, to no avail.

I seem to remember having this same problem on OS X 10.8 at some point last year, and think I solved it via an online hint, but I have yet to re-find that solution (I'm on OS 10.9 now).

OS X Mavericks :: Find History Of All Hard Drives Accessed On Mac?

Sep 10, 2014

Recently I appear to have lost my external hard drive for my mac, where I kept my backups of my entire computer. In trying to find when I lost it, I'm trying to figure out when the last time I plugged it into my computer was - although my computer says that it's been 147 days or so since my last backup, I know I plugged the hard drive in since then (it just never fully backed up.)

Is there any place on the computer that has a date-by-date history of all the drives accessed/plugged into the computer? There is a risk that my identity has been stolen, if indeed I lost the hard drive long enough ago that someone has their hands on it and the sensitive backups inside it.

Final Cut Express HD :: Why Does Export File Formats That Can't Be Accessed In QuickTime

Jun 2, 2014

I've been slowly but surely figuring out the FCE program.  About 3 months ago I editied a video, exported it and when I clicked on the .MOV file it automatically converted it to a QuickTime compatible file, which I was then able to save and upload to YouTube with no issues.  I have not updated or changed any settings or anything on my computer since then and now when I export a video it shows up as an .MOV file that QuickTime can't access.  Also, when I click on the "more info" button, it sends me to a link with a list of compatible formats and at the very top of the list is .MOV!  I really don't know what to do now.

I just want to be able to view the video I edited and post it to YouTube.

ITunes :: Errors When Transferring Music From External HD To External HD

Jun 15, 2012

I wasn't sure whether to put this post it iTunes (since all my music is played in iTunes) or in Mac Lion.I purchased a new external HD because my old one is about to fail. However, the old one is working fine right now. I have both HD's plugged in to my laptop. I am trying to transfer the music files from one to the other. But the copying gets stuck, and after several minutes, says one of the over 1,000 songs has an error and the copying is stopped. Without choosing a few songs at a time and copying that way, and then removing the file the error message shows, which will take a long time, is there any work around for this?

OS X :: Transferring ITunes To Internal Hd / Itunes Present In External Hd

Dec 21, 2010

I currently host my iTunes library on an external HDD which I set up to use on my Mac Mini. I just successfully swapped in a WD Scorpio Blue 640GB HDD into my MBP A1211 and also fresh installed Snow Leopard so the laptop is clean and free of anything I don't want. Even ran Monolingual thanks to advice I read on here.

So basically since my MBP's HD is large enough to comfortably accommodate my iTunes library I'd like to copy it onto it's HD from my external.I did some searching but it was mostly how to transfer from PC to MAC with external blah blah. My situation seems easy enough since I already have my iTunes in an external...

I'd love to just drag it over to my BMP's HD but I want to do it right. Can someone give me the steps to get my iTunes into my MBP?

current iTunes already in external HD and being used by Mac Mini. need to transfer iTunes copy from external to MBP's HD. Want steps, thanks!

OS X :: ITunes To External - Using Previous ITunes Folder?

Mar 4, 2010

I have my itunes folder backed up from my iMac to my external HD. The whole "Music" folder was copied. I am trying to use that library on the external the main library since my iMac is gone. I have no music files on the Macbook (only had 20, deleted them), so I'm just trying to redirect iTunes to look at, and show the iTunes library in the iTunes music folder that I have backed up on the HD.

Ideally, I want it to copy over anything new I drag into it going forward so that everything's on the external. So I've read numerous articles on how to do what should be a simple task and it has proved anything but. I went into prefs. and changed the location of the iTunes library to the external folder of 'iTunes Music.' Then it pops up and says "do you want iTunes to rename the files in keeping with your "keep folders organized selection"? So I say yes, even though everything is already organized.

So it's not showing up yet, I restart iTunes, nothing. So I hit file, library, organize library. Then I hit consolidate files and "upgrade to itunes organization." Nothing. I restart iTunes, nothing. What is going on? I would like to be able to keep it updated on the external, and would like to do this with iPhoto as well. I know it's possible, but once again, it seems Apple is trying to make something that should be easy more difficult than it needs to be.

ITunes :: Using Itunes To Play Music From External Drive / Playlists Show No Music File

Aug 6, 2010

...now I don't have the same functionality with iTunes. Basically, I can't use iTunes at all anymore as the interface for my music and videos. Once the external drive is mounted, I can navigate through it and play individual songs, but I can't use iTunes to do that. All my previous Playlists show up down the left side of iTunes, but there isn't any music in them.

I downloaded 2 songs yesterday, made a Playlist out of them, and because the path in the Advanced tab of the iTunes Preferences is correct, it automatically added the songs to the external hard drive. I synced my iPod and it was completely erased except for the 2 new songs. Is there a way to use iTunes to navigate my music like I used to when I stored the information on the internal hard drive but keep the information on the external drive? I have a Mac running Snow Leopard and the latest version of iTunes.
