I have started ripping dvds and adding to itunes (although not copied to the itunes media library under preferences) but before i go any further, i think i will put all my media on an external drive instead. Is there an easy way to update the path of the files i've already copied to itunes or is it easier to delete what i have already done (approx 200 files) and just re add them to itunes from their new location.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI transferred all my itunes library to an external hard drive.I had all my songs in itunes and then went to "preferences" and set itunes to look on my external hard drive for my itunes. Then I went to "library" and then "consolidate", and it moved all my library over to my external. I can verify that my songs are all there on my externalHowever, now, itunes won't play any songs of mine. I double click on the song in itunes and it just wont play. There's no error message, there's no exclamation point, it just won't play. Any idea what is goign on? Preferences still shows that my library is directing to the external

I am trying to copy CDs to my macbook air and I have done this quite a few times before. Suddenly though the attempts fail (on more than on disc). I insert the disc, iTunes reads and displays the tracks on the disc and starts spinning the disc (i.e. I can hear it). The iTunes window shows and initial progress on the first track and then gives me an error message saying it can't read or write to the disc ...

...now I don't have the same functionality with iTunes. Basically, I can't use iTunes at all anymore as the interface for my music and videos. Once the external drive is mounted, I can navigate through it and play individual songs, but I can't use iTunes to do that. All my previous Playlists show up down the left side of iTunes, but there isn't any music in them.
I downloaded 2 songs yesterday, made a Playlist out of them, and because the path in the Advanced tab of the iTunes Preferences is correct, it automatically added the songs to the external hard drive. I synced my iPod and it was completely erased except for the 2 new songs. Is there a way to use iTunes to navigate my music like I used to when I stored the information on the internal hard drive but keep the information on the external drive? I have a Mac running Snow Leopard and the latest version of iTunes.
My iTunes library has apparently filled my entire iMac (according to the computer I have over 97 days' worth of music). I would like to know 1) how to properly save my iTunes library to an external hard drive and 2) how to use iTunes so that it uses the library on the external drive.

My external drive is not always on so whenever I go to itunes and download a new tune my library path automagically changes to the default path on my MAC, thus leaving the new downloaded tune on my MAC and not on the external drive! I do not have the space on my MAC to hold my entire itunes library. How can I make sure that my external is always on? I have a mac mini I could hook it up to instead of having it on my AEBS ,would that be a better solution?

I just got a new external hard drive and have moved all my music over to it but can't get my itunes to recognize it, I have gone to the preferences and when I try and change the location where the music is itunes does not find my external hard drive. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Mini connected to a Lacie external HD that houses all of my iTunes library. I've just bought a new iMac to replace the Mini and want to keep the iTunes library on the external, just point the new machine's iTunes to the existing library on the external.
How best to do that? I don't want to restore from TM because I want to start fresh from this Mac and there really isn't a lot to keep other than the iTunes (most of it is on the external). If I point to an existing location, I don't need to Consolidate, do I? Any risk of losing the library? Do I need to unlink the library on the existing Mac?
I own a 20-inch 250GB iMac and a 320GB Western Digital External Hard Drive. I recently began running out of room on my Mac, mainly because of all that I have on iTunes. Out of my 250GB I am now down to about 18GB. With this in mind, I went out and picked up a 320GB drive to pluck all my iTunes fluff on. I have changed the iTunes Media Folder location in the Advanced Tab to that of my new drive a la Volumes>Dj22091 iTunes>iTunes. I have also consolidated the library and have successfully copied all of my media to that of my new external drive.
Now, the problem. When deleting the material off of my Mac what am I going to pull into the trash bin exactly? I read here @ [URL] that I am to leave the library files alone and to delete all the media out of the Music>iTunes folder but...I don't see anything other than my music listed. If I am to get rid of everything and free up space I would need to delete my TV Shows, Movies, etc. but they are nowhere to be found. I am still left with only about 18GB left on my Mac, so I know that they are around here somewhere.

I have a 500+gig music collection on my home PC. The problem is, 275gig is on a Maxtor External HD (my E: Drive) so the pathway for itunes is different than the rest of the collection which is on a Western Digital MyBook 1T (my H: Drive). I have had no problem until my Maxtor decided to become 'unrecongnisable', thus rendering Itunes unable to find the music on this E Drive. Somehow, I have been able to 'wake up' the Maxtor by connecting to my lap top, disconnecting, and then re-connecting to my home PC. Sensing a problem, I transferred the 275g of music over to the Mybook 1T and renamed this folder 'Music Maxtor'. Of course, I have a folder called 'Music' on the 1T also.
The problem now is, how do I change the pathway in itunes for all of the music that was originally on the Maxtor?? Do I have to do this manually for EACH SONG!?? I don't want to move the music in the music maxtor folder to the other 'music folder, as some of the file names are the same. eg. I have an Aerosmith folder in both. Should I just rename? Is there an easier way? OR, can I purchase another external HD and when I connect it, I make it my new E Drive and just transfer the music maxtor folder back to it??? Would that work for itunes?? I know I have created a fair rod for my back here, but what do you do when you run out of room on an ext HD? Or one packs it in...

I'm running itunes 10.5.3 on my imac. I transferred my itunes music folder to an external drive because it was taking up too much space on my internal drive. Then I went into itunes preferences and changed the location of the folder to the external drive. But I can't access tons of my mp3s now. When I click on a song in my library that it can't access, I get that explanation mark, and a statement asking me if I would like to locate the file. I locate it, and then I can listen to it.
And after I find that missing file for itunes, a window pops up and asks "Would you like itunes to use the location of "-----" to find other missing files in your library"? I select 'yes'. But then itunes can't find the missing files, even if they're in the same exact folder as the last one I found! It seems to me like this function is broken? And I have like 2,000 missing files! I even re-imported my itunes music folder back into my library. But that didn't work and now I have a ton of duplicates.

I have had a series of hard drive issues. My iTunes library is kept on an external drive. This is the second one that failed. I am unable to copy the files enmass from one drive to the other using the normal method for relocating an iTunes library (due to drive errors). However, I was able to do a folder-by-folder finder copy from the failed drive to the new external. Then, I went into iTunes preference and repointed the iTunes Media folder location to the new drive. I had the "keep organized" and "copy files to library" boxes checked. Then, iTunes wanted to update the files, which it did. However, all of my file paths in iTunes still point to the old, damaged hard drive. How do I get them to have the correct path to the new drive? I had this situation once in the past, but I cannot remember how I solved it.

I need to move my iTunes library from one external disk to another, because the original disk is about to fail. So, I went into iTunes Perferences --> Advanced, and set the library to a new, empty folder on the new drive. Nothing changed. I expected all my music to vanish from iTunes, so that I would have to re-import it. However, all the music remained, still on the old disk. At this point, if I were to recreate the library on the new disk, I would have all of my music twice. Is it possible to move an iTunes library from one external drive to another, or am I stuck with my original choice until I buy a new machine? What I'm trying to figue out is how to see my iTunes on the new Mac without downloading all the files on to the hard drive as there is 2TB worth of information it wouldn't fit anyway?
