ITunes :: Re-ripping Older CDs With Higher Bit Rate?
May 4, 2012
I have a lot of old rips in my huge iTunes Library which I did with the old standard of 128 bit. Since I own the CDs, I thought of re-ripping them in 256 AAC, but if I do so, I dont get updates of the "old" rips but new ones. What I would like to do is an automatic exchange of the old and new files w/o having to put all the metadata and cover art again.

I've got an iPhone & iPad who's filling up quickly mainly due to my audio tracks. They range from 128kbps all the way to ALAC. Currently the audio is consuming 36.9GB but when I select "Convert Higher Bit Rate Songs" to 256kbps, I'm hoping that anything higher (e.g. my 320kbps and ALAC) get converted down and thereby overall consuming less space.
When I select this option, the Audio jumps up to 45.1GB instead. What's going on? Is it upsampling my other 128/160/192kbps tracks up to 256kbps? This option currently seems counterintuitive to me.

All my music has covers in iTunes Library. But after i updated to iOS 5.1 they are missing on my devices.
It happens every time i check "convert higher bit rate songs to 192/256 kbps" on iTunes 10.6 (40) on my Mac.
On the screenshot (iPad 2010 running iOS 5.1) Bon Iver's album copied by default settings, and Coldplay's album converted to 192 kbps.BTW on my old iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2.1) all covers are OK even when convert feature is ON.

Has anyone come across any Firewire memory keys? (Similar to the USB Keys we have now days). Firewire has a much higher transfer rate than USB 2.0, so I was wondering if any company made the firewire memory keys. I did a quick google search but didn't come up with anything recent. All the articles I read were from years ago.

I downloaded the update on the 6th Feb, and now when I try to rip a cd to ITunes in AAC format, I get this error message: "The current encoder settings for bitrate and sample rate are not valid for this file" Now I know that everything was fine on 4th Feb, as I ripped some cd tracks in AAC format ok. The only solution I have found so far, is to go into Prefs>Advanced>importing and change to either Apple lossless or Mpeg (320), and the tracks rip fine? Can I get back to how I was, ie using AAC somehow - or has it been corrupted by the Quicktime download 7.6 on 6th Feb. I have no back up at this stage? Has anyone else had this problem?

I've recently been looking into how I can get high-resolution artwork for some of my albums, and I was wondering if I can use iTunes to get some. I don't buy music from iTunes so I wouldn't know, I thought I'd ask here before buying and being disappointed.
I know that there have been applications online to grab album art from iTunes that don't work anymore, so I was wondering - if I buy 1 track from an album that I want the album art for, can I then get the high-res artwork from the track? By ripping it using tagging software or otherwise?

I've a 27 inch, mid-2010 iMac w/ 2.85 GHz i5 processor, 12 GB of RAM and running OSX 10.9.4 (Mavericks). iTunes is 11.3.1 (2) has stopped ripping cds to iTunes. Just ejects them. I have used this option quite a bit.I had my hard drive replaced by Apple free of charge about 2 years ago.

1) I had some problems after changing my acct. name, then changing it back again. I thought it was all sorted out, but then started getting an error message when I try to rip CDs in iTunes: You don't have write access for your iTunes Media folder or a folder within it. To change I tried Get Info & have RW permission, so I don't know what to do about that. Other than ripping CDs, iTunes seemed to be working fine however after a week of the above problem, it has developed something new that may be related. I can no longer use Get Info within iTunes to correct or add to entries about the albums like composer, tracks, disk, etc Perhaps that is another RW permission issue.

I started noticing a few months ago that CDs I have been importing no longer display "256 (VBR)" anymore even though I have my import settings set to iTunes Plus. I tried using a custom setting that is exactly the same thing I went through custom->stereo bit rate of 256->and checked the box for VBR. The same thing happens with both. Initially "256 (VBR)" is displayed in the Bit Rate View; however, after I play the track or if I edit any of the tags it immediately switches it to 256 and no more (VBR) listed after it. Is anyone else having this issue? I thought with the last few iTunes updates that maybe this would resolve but it hasn't.

I was ripping in a cd which itunes identified with multiple titles & Artists, so I had to choose one. I accidentally chose the wrong one and now I can't figure out how to undo it. I've ejected and rebooted itunes, but it still identifies that cd with the wrong title&Artist that I picked. How to undo my mistake so I can rip in my cd for who it really is?

I have downloaded some lectures that are below 128 Bit Rate, so they are not being uploaded onto iTunes Match.
I was told to change the Bit Rate to 128, and that would solve the problem.
How do I do that????

Upon plugging my iPod Nano into my Macbook Pro, random songs become rated 4/5 stars, messing up my 'Top Rated' playlist. No, I've never rated these songs before or touched their album artwork etc. so I don't understand how these songs can be rated automatically despite playing some of the songs only once.

I have to make a documentary that involves film clips. I had heard that it is illegal even for educational purposes to clip out scenes and rip DVDs. Does anyone know if there are exceptions to this rule? Furthermore, I need a program capable of clipping chapters (Specifically) from DVD movies. I won't need to rip full DVDs. So essentially, I need a program that is effective and fast, that gives the option to rip single chapters from DVDs that I will then need to easily collaborate with Final Cut Express 4? Any recommendations? I keep hearing recommendations for Hand Brake, Mac The Ripper, and RipIt. Which is the fastest, best quality, most user friendly? Are their any words of wisdom or forewarnings I should know about these programs?

I'm a brand new Mac Pro owner and in one weekend I was able to convert more of my collection than I could in weeks with my other mac. It's nuts! I owe a lot of that to this board, and I thank you guys for it. I'm hoping maybe there's a better way to speed up my current process.
Anyways, on to the topic. Right now my steps are:
1. Insert DVD and RipIt takes care of the rest (with a non-riplocked drive). Takes 8-12 minutes per DVD.
2. I'll do a stack of my DVDs then queue up a list with the terminal-updated version of Handbrake.
Each movie takes 25-45 minutes, using only 30% processor power, tops.
3. I usually run two instances of Handbrake to speed up the process. They read the DVD images from my main drive and they write to a second internal drive. Last night I had 15 movies queued up for each Handbrake instance and let it go overnight. All 30 were done by 7:30 this morning (started the process at about midnight).
Going through my entire collection has reminded me of how many bad movies I've bought over the years. There's just some need I have to get my entire collection ready to go on my Apple TV's.
How about you guys? What's your process look like? I'd like to see quicker conversions, but I think I'd need an SSD and better optimized Handbrake to make that happen.

For a community service project I volunteered to help out someone with their audio book. The audiobook is about getting your life in balance by looking through the lenses of the ancient Navajo Coyoteway ceremony. All the sales are going to charity and I need to help put it in the proper format on a website. Here are the instructions I've been given: "Rip the cd's into a relatively high compression mp3 format and tag each file. There are between twenty and thirty files on each cd and the idea is that tagging them for an mp3 player will be very helpful for reading the book and listening to the mp3's together.
Each file needs to be tagged in a way that references a specific chapter in the book. The idea of the relatively high compression will enable the smallest possible zip file (containing all three cd's) to be downloaded." I think I understand most of that but I don't really know where to start. They specifically told me to not use iTunes, I don't know why but that is what they told me. There are three CD's, each with about 30 tracks and I need to put each track in mp3 format and tag each file according to the page number of the book.
