I have a new iMac and an older MacBook. I wanna transfer about 70 gigs of info to the macbook from the iMac. Only problem is the iMac has a newer firewire port and the macbook has an older firewire port. Transferring wirelessly through aim will take way too long. Can I connect through the ethernet ports or maybe usb ports?

The problem is that the iMac has a firewire 800 port, and the macbook has a firewire 400 port. If I buy a firewire 400 cable, will it work on the iMac?
Have purchased a used white intel core two duo imac. It's not in my possession yet.
1. Backing up before transferring data. Can I use one of those key things (don't know what they are called) that fit into usb port?
2. Once I've backed up, what is best way to connect the two computers for transferring files?
3. My understanding is that by using migration assistant, it will transfer all of those files necessary for a particular application...is this correct, and if so, will it then put those files where they should be?

I get results that have 4, 6, and 9 pin options. Do I need the 9 to 9 pin cable? 6 to 6 pin? Some other combination? My macbook is around 4 years old, pre-leopard, osx 10.4.x. The iMac is brand new.
Had a hard drive failing/failure. I am having my bad hard drive replaced with a bigger hard drive. (New Obviously) I have an iMac. (1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 17-inch) To have my data transferred from the old drive will cost over a hundred bucks more. I am trying to save money but transferring it myself. Just wondering why does apple supply firewire ports on all their comps including laptops, because these days I can't find anything that has firewire ports that I will use everyday i.e. flash disc, HD, mouse etc. I know there's somewhere a 2.5" HD firewire case available but I already have a USB case for an external, and it would probably be more expensive to get it. I have the printer connected to my iomega powered hard drive which in turn connects to my MBP via firewire 800. Earlier the printer was working fine when the iomega was connected via a USB port. BUt im short on USB ports (one goes to my Companion 5 speakers and the second to a 2nd display besides the mini DVI display) hence need to connect via firewire.

So I guess I need to get a firewire 800 card and it will only be used in conjunction with out AJA unit (HD video production), so if it has one or four ports it doesn't really matter. The Macbook Pro's have Firewire 800 which I think is significantly faster than USB 2.0. I also found some HD docks with firewire ports. So, what kind of speeds can I expect with firewire ports? On another note, I wish the macbook pro had an esata port!

When I plugged it in again the external harddrives (four in all) that were daisy chained through the two firewire ports aren't being recognized anymore. I thought it was a bad cord or insufficient power but nothing worked. When I finally got around to looking at the System Profiler and check Firewire it said, "Unable to list firewire devices". I admit that I'm at a loss and I have no idea how to troubleshoot this.

I have tried this numerous times and it doesn't seem to do anything (i.e. the Mac just loads OS X and doesn't re-boot like the instructions say). I'm using a MS Wireless Comfort Keyboard for Mac. Can you reset using a wireless keyboard?
Since I wasn't making any progress with that, I was toying with bringing in the Mac to a genius bar. Never having used the genius bar before - how does it work? Do I bring the computer in and leave it with them? Do they work on it while I'm there? I don't have an extended warranty so do they charge time and materials? I'm wondering if that might get awfully expensive and if I ought to just buy a PCI-X firewire card instead.

just purchased an intel imac (the latest) and wishes to transfer the data from the old non intel G5 to this new mac. During the procedure he has been asked for a passKEY not a passWORD and he has no idea what this is.

I have an old MAC Powerbook G4 and I think the OS system (which is OS 10.2) is corrupt because it will not go past the apple on the screen to boot up. I would like to transfer some music in my iTunes library on that computer to my PC (which has Windows Vista) I have seen a tech hook this old MAC up to something and i think he was using Firewire and shazaam it showed a bunch of my files on the screen that I have seen nothing but blackness, an apple, or the thing that comes up on the screen when I hold down "T" while booting up. I have hooked both computers up using 6 to 4 Firewire and the MAC is not seeing anything. How did that tech guy get my files to come up on the screen available for transfer?

I have tried twice and it starts at 1hr 30min and goes to 50min to 2hrs 30min and then finishes with in 30min total. Once it finished nothing had finished, it transferred the application names, but not the applications, no documents, no pictures, no downloads, nothing except app names transfered.

I just got a Mac Mini (March 2009 model) and want to connect it via Firewire to my Sony TRV-22 camcoder. The camcorder has a Mini DV Firewire jack on it (I think this is called a 4-pin connector sometimes too). But on the Mac Mini, I can't tell if I need a 6-pin or a 9-pin. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have big (8gig) ISO files on my Macbook which I want to put on my PC running Win XP which does not have a connection. So networking is out of the question. I have an external HD, but it is formatted only to work with my PC. So using an external HD is out of the question. My Macbook has got into the habit of spitting out blank discs when I put them in - something I don't have the patience to get fixed at a shop right now. (I can't be without my laptop for any extended period). So burning a disc is out of the question. I tried turning my Mac into an HD by holding the T key on boot. But I cannot attach it to my PC via firewire because my PC does not recognise firewire (for some reason, though the port is there...). So...that's out of the question. I decided to try a USB transfer cable and went on a hunt for a USB cable which did not have USB on one end and a square plug on the other. I need one with USB on BOTH ends, that looks like a firewire but is a USB. It's awfully impossible to find such a thing in great number. I found one that was incompatible with Mac/XP transfers. I tried using a 16 gig USB drive but could only transfer 4gb chunks of data at a time. So what the hell am I to do now? How do I get this data off my mac and onto my PC?
