IMac :: Transferring Files To External HD?
Jun 4, 2009
I recently moved my WD 1Tb HD from my PC to my iMac which recognised it and it's files at once. However when I try to move any files from my iMac to the external drive, I get the following message:The item could not be moved because WD My Book cannot be modified.I have no idea what this means (I'm a relative Newbie to Mac) can anyone help me?

I am having issues getting files to transfer from my computer (MacOSX) to my external Hard Drive (it is an "Elements" hard drive) When ever I try to add files to the HDD I get an error message that reads as, "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "file name" could not be read or written. (error code - 36)" What I don't understand is why I have previously been able to add files but I currently can not. I can however take files from the HDD.

I'm new to Mac so I'm sure its user error.
I recently bought a Macbook and I have a external USB hard drive that is formatted NTFS. I copied all of the files off of external HD and pasted them on my Macbook. I slicked the external hard drive and formatted it as FAT32 so I could read & write on both a PC and Mac if I need.
Anyways, once the external hard drive was formatted I tried moving all of the files back to the external but I keep getting and error code once I paste the files on the external drive. It says: "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. Error code 0"
Now I'm not sure if the files are locked or what but I need help. I want to move them back to the external drive. It actually copies a few files to the external but nowhere near what all I need. They are just some .doc files that are on there

I have recently made the plunge into mac kingdom and very pleased so far.
I am going through the pain staking task of transferring music, photos etc.. from my windows laptop to my new macbook pro.
I started off by setting up file sharing and copying files but it is taking absolutely ages.
Ideally I would like to use my 500gb mybook external hard drive but given an experience I just had when putting a memory stick in my mac straight after loading it up from my pc am I likely to lose all my current external hard drive data?
Complete ball ache if thats the case as all my films are on there and burning it all to DVD would take forever.

I'm trying to copy the contents of my 2nd internal drive to an external drive (Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus), but at some point during the transfer it stops copying and completely locks up my computer. Not sure what the problem is. I don't know if this is related, but when I try and repair the 2nd internal disk while I have any other firewire (or usb) drives connected, I get an error message "unable to unmount disk". When all other drives are disconnected, I do a repair and there is no problem. Is that normal?

I am trying to transfer a large file (~7GB) from my macbook pro to my external drive... but seems that I keep getting an error. If I try to drag and drop from my Mac drive to the folder of my external hard drive I keep getting this message: 'The operation can?t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0).' I tried to use a UNIX command with the Terminal $mv file.xxx /Volumes/HardDrive/ at first it seemed to work, but after a while I receive this message from the Terminal: 'File too large' I am now frustrated... I need to save this large file for backup purposes and my external hard drive is not big enough to be used for Time Machine (it has 80GB out of 160 of space left)

I just bought a 2TB OWC Mercury Elite Pro drive. And I'm passing data (mostly video) onto it from a WD MyBook drive. Both use the Journaled HSF format. I'm on a MacBook Pro (10.5.8).
Problem? Every so often I get a message saying "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data......could not be read or written." And once this happens, the transfer falls into some limbo land it won't copy any more but i can't get rid of the "copy" window showing the halted progress. I actually have to reboot just to begin the transferring process with another folder.
So what goes? In the last case, it was some JPG file that appeared to stop the action, usually it's some kind of video file. But I can't find any rhyme or reason to why this occurs, nor can I find any distinguishing characteristic of the offending files.

I just ordered my first iMac. (27" i7). When it arrives, I would like to transfer a few gigs (15-20) of data from my early '08 15" MBP to it. I won't be doing the whole Apple wizard transfer thing, as I only want a few folders, not all of my settings.
What would be the best way to transfer these files? I'm thinking firewire. My MBP has both the 400 and 800 port. Would this work well? How about ethernet?
I would like to order from Monoprice, as I still have a $40 store credit. Will this 800/800 cable work with both machines? I get so confused with all of the different cables they have.

I have a Power Mac 8600 OS 8.1 and would like to transfer files to a New Imac OS 10.5.6.
The 8600 has a built in 100 zip drive. I was thinking of buying a used Iomega 100 mg external zip to use on my Imac to transfer the files via the removable disks. Will this work?

I'm buying a new 21.5 inch iMac tomorrow, and I want to transfer all of my files (.mp3's, .avi's, wallpapers, etc.) from my macbook via firewire.
The problem is that the iMac has a firewire 800 port, and the macbook has a firewire 400 port. If I buy a firewire 400 cable, will it work on the iMac?

My previous computer was an HP Pavilion laptop, in which died on me few months ago. The graphics card died and it was built into the motherboard, so I had to replace the whole motherboard. A) Money wise it wasn't worthed B) It was 2 years old.
Now the laptop still works, just doesn't show anything on the screen, but in the background its actually working. So the files from the hard drive are still there. The only way I used to get the screen viewable was by connecting my laptop to another monitor and go into safe mode. The laptop has 2 hard drives. And the files weren't on the primary but on the secondary built-in hard drive. The operating system I was using was Windows Vista.
I've just bought a new iMac, and wish to try find a way were I can transfer the files into my iMac.

My new mac has pages, numbers & keynote. Do I still need to buy Office, in order to transfer my word & excel files? I would be fine trying out the apple versions, but I don't think iMac will transfer the files unless I install Office. Is there maybe a slick way to change the file extensions prior to transfer? I am trying to transfer, by the way, from my files backed up on Carbonite.

I want to transfer my iTunes files from a PC to an external hard drive, and then I want to run iTunes on a Mac PowerBook from the external hard drive. Getting the files on the external hard drive doesn't seem too hard. I'm just not sure about what I need to do for the second part. Also, will any external HD work for this?

I'm transferring files from my MacBook Pro to the new iMac. I decide to use the Migration Assistant and proceed to connect both machines using the USB port. All looked nice in the beginning and the bar tab status started to fulfill indicate the advance and hours to finish. Since yesterday in both screens indicate "3 hours and 53 minutes remaining" and don't go forward. Looks like the process freeze.

First of all here's my setup: 30d/4u Charter internet coming in through my Linksys modem, from there to port 1 of my 2006 Intel Xserve running NAT and DHCP, out from port 2 of the Xserve into my AirPort Extreme running in Bridge Mode, and then out to my other devices.
My AirPort setup is as follows: Internet tab-DHCP, address set by Xserve; Wireless tab-Create a wireless network, WPA/WPA 2 Personal; Wireless Options...-5 GHz network name is not checked, Radio mode is set to 802.11a/n-802.11b/g/n (Automatic), both 2.4 and 5 GHz channels are set to Automatic; Network tab-Off (Bridge Mode).
I am transferring 100+ GB of data across the network to my Xserve, but it is only Xferring at 5.5 MB/s, or around 44 Mbps, which isn't even at wireless-g speeds. My iMac is the Mid 2010 27" BTO w/ 2.93 i7 and 8 GB of RAM. It is also wireless-n compatible. The Xserve is wired and they have had gigabit NICs since the G5s.
Things I've tried: In Wireless Options... I tried turning Radio Mode to 802.11a/n-802.11b/g and leaving 5 GHz network name unchecked, but the speeds were down in the 2 MB/s range. Again in Wireless Options... I checked the box for 5 GHz network name, and left Radio Mode in Auto, joined the 5 GHz network on my iMac, tried again, but again only 2 MB/s or less. In Wireless Options... again, I checked the 5 GHz network name box, and set Radio Mode to a/n-b/g, but ocne again, it ran at 2 MB/s or less. The AirPort Extreme is model A1354, which is obviously 802.11n compatible, and the iMac is also 802.11n compatible.

I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD. When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??

I wasn't sure whether to put this post it iTunes (since all my music is played in iTunes) or in Mac Lion.I purchased a new external HD because my old one is about to fail. However, the old one is working fine right now. I have both HD's plugged in to my laptop. I am trying to transfer the music files from one to the other. But the copying gets stuck, and after several minutes, says one of the over 1,000 songs has an error and the copying is stopped. Without choosing a few songs at a time and copying that way, and then removing the file the error message shows, which will take a long time, is there any work around for this?

I have a Lacie external hard disk that was originally formatted for PCs. I have some files there, but more importantly, my iTunes library is saved directly on the Lacie (I have everything on apple lossless, so they are some big files). I will keep using this PC while connected to the Lacie hard disk to syncro my iPod.
The problem is that I bought a mac now and I wanted the Lacie hard disk to be able to transfer files from mac to pc and vice versa. I have already read that I would have to copy the files that are on the Lacie, reformat the Lacie and then paste the files back. My only doubt is that if I do this reformatting, will I have any problems using the iTunes library while connected to my pc and iPod?
I just ask that because every time I changed any iTunes library folder on the computer, the iTunes would say that the music file couldnt be found and ask me if I wanted to look for the file. I didnt want to reformat the Lacie to later find out that I would have to look for every single music file, because that would be nearly impossible. I dont know if I was able to make my question really clear

I'm banging my head against the wall with this problem. I have a new MBP 13", 4GB Ram, etc etc. When I transfer files across my network (or the office network), it will consistently fail to transfer a few of the files. For instance, I just tried to copy 50 photos to an SMB share on our server here at the office. The transfer window show the progress of 50 files, but when I look at the folder, there are only 48 files. Sometimes I get less, sometimes I get all 50. The same goes for my home network to an SMB share. I've confirmed this failure over N and G networks. The AP at home and the office are different models and I went as far as purchasing a new one for home since I thought it was the problem. Same results. Is there some hardware error going on here with my wifi card? Is there any way to test it? Are the SMB shares the problem?

I have an IMAC and I am having problems transferring video files I download to my external hard drive. I had trouble playing the files at first because it was not readable with Quicktime. I downloaded VPN and it played with VPN. I don't want to save those files on my computer so I would like to transfer it to my external harddrive. When I try to drag it over, it won't let me drop it in. I am new to the MAC world. Is there a way to choose where it will save itself right before you download like there is on windows. I click on it and it does not prompt you, it just starts downloading.

I installed Win 7 with Bootcamp on my iMac. All went fine but I had this issue of having video files on either operating system, Win 7 and Mac OS X. Backing up my data to my external HDD was tricky and I had to use FAT32, to be readable and writable from both OS X and Win7. But most of my videos are >2GBs, so FAT32 was an issue, and NTFS was out of the question. Till I came across PARAGON NTFS software, which allows Mac OS X to read and write on NTFS drives, but now I have an issue
In System Preferences in OS X...
Going to the Start Up Disk...
Win 7 on BootCamp has Disappeared...
To restart to BootCamp from OS X, I have to do it manually by holding down the Option Key.

I've decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to a 17inch Unibody MBP from the 15inch model. I love the size of the 15inch model but really need that extra resolution. I've got a buyer for my old laptop coming round tomorrow and I need to save all of my files and settings. My laptops been backing up to time capsule for the past month or so, will I be able to all of my settings from this or would it be a better idea to create a disk image and use that?
Has everyone else who's done the switch been happy with their new 17incher? I'm kinda worried that it'll be too big as the size of the one i've got now just seems perfect.

Some of the files are gone and we are guessing that is the heat damage and want to get the rest off ASAP
We already have a new external hard drive to back up his files

I needed to make 40 dvd's. My burner is burnt out on my mac. I've created all the dvd's as iso files with iDVD. Now I need to transfer them to my PC that has a functioning burner. SOOOO... transferring 81.5 GB of data over a network will take days. Having said that, I'm using an unsecured network that drops out frequently. (I just moved in, it'll be weeks until the phone company can hook up my internet... we just had a hurricane and they're busy with repairs). Next idea, use a flash drive. Most of the iso files are bigger than 4Gb - so FAT32 is out. What's left?
which sounds promising, but once the files are split, how do I join them back together on my PC? Oh, and did I mention that this job is for a client and they're waiting on it. STRESS!!
