Mar 29, 2009I am trying to move my desktop icons around my screen but it appears as if they are locked.
Know of anyway I could ''unlock them'' and move them around to sit where I want them to.

Not able to move the desktop file icons or copy/move files in between folders ... I've tried right clicking, then "show view options" but nothing seems to be working.

Why am I unable to move icons around on desktop? How do I release these?

So im trying to move the desktop icons around and for some reason the computer wont let me do it. Ive also tried doing it on a flash drive and it wont work either, the only thing I can think of is that maybe its a setting of some kind but ive checked several difrent settings and its not what I need ( displays, desktop, general).

I am a photographer. My Mac Tower and Macbook Pros display my external hard drives on the desktop. That makes workflow so much easier. I just purchased an I-Mac and have to access the external HDs through the menu. how I can display the icons for the external HDs on my desktop?
View 4 Replies View RelatedOn my desktop the little disk image icons are coming up when i open certain applications. I wanna make them disappear, but still be able to see ipods, cds, and external drives.

i am a tad stumped by this issue i'm having right now with my new imac. i noticed one day that none of my desktop aliases show any longer. in fact if i go to the desktop folder through finder my files and such show in there however none of my aliases nor those files show on the actual desktop. another thing i've noticed is that whenever i now try to drag and drop anything to the desktop whether it be a URL from safari or an alias i made in finder the dragged item simply just drags itself back to where i pulled it from.

Okay, I'm having some problems with my Powerbook. Yesterday, I upgraded Firefox. When re-opening after the upgrade, I had a kernel panic. I restarted my computer and figured I would be good to go. Well, after logging back in, I found that Finder was acting up and I no longer had any desktop icons. Now, clicking the Finder icon in the dock will open a new Finder window just fine. If I go to the Desktop from there, all my icons are still there. So, I decided to restart my computer and see if that made a difference.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThey're still accessible through finder, but now I can't drag-and-drop anything (at all) to the desktop. It was fine a minute ago before I shut down and rebooted my laptop. Restarts and switching users does nothing. I'm using Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4.

Anyone come across a problem where all the desktop icons disappear? I also cannot right click on my desktop to bring up a contextual menu, my machine appears to be running faultlessly apart from that. I have run Onyx to reset permissions and have checked the disk but cannot seem to find anything wrong.
Running OSX 10.10 on a quad core 2.66 Mac Pro.
New Mac owner...
I attempt to drag a dock icon to a new location on the dock, but it won't let me. The other icons don't separate so the icon will drop to the location I want. Randomly, items will separate when I hover over so I could drop the item between them, but only in that spot and no other locations. What am I missing here?
So, I'm unable to put the dock icons exactly where I want them. I've installed all updates.
Im soon to buy a macbook, and coming from a PC, I was wondering if its possible to swap around the +, - etc from the top left of the windows to the top right as it feels more natural to work that way.

MUST FIX: I CANNOT MOVE any icons or folders whatsoever (except to the Trash)! I checked the log too, but I have no idea what to look for there. This happened right about 1-2 days ago (11/20-22/2009).
BONUS FIX: As for iTunes, well it got bugged (clicked and didn't activated), so I deleted it and I don't know how to reinstall iTunes. This happened some years back, so I almost forgot about it.
so I am try to fix a macbook that was updated to 10.5.7 it appears there is an issue with finder, files or folders can't be move (nothing is locked), spotlight icon and time are gone from the menu bar, no programs will print. I have tried restarting, repairing permissions, removing safari beta 4 (downgraded back to 3) with no luck. Trying the combo update is my next thought?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 2nd monitor attached to my MBAir. I have icons (folders, a few files, and some aliases - not a lot!!) positioned on both monitors. I can work this way just fine for days. (Yes, I do restart nightly and, yes, after a basic restart all the icons stay put.) But sometimes, out of the blue, something happens that causes all the icons on the 2nd monitor to line up on the border between the two screen displays (i.e., almost off the 2nd monitor but not quite completely onto the MBAir's display).
This seems to be related to saving a file onto the desktop -- say, when I'm using Safari on the 2nd monitor and I drag the address bar address to save a webloc file. However, I can do this more often than not with no odd effects. (However, lately I've started dragging into a FOLDER on the desktop to avoid this.) Now, I just watched it happen when all I did was save a tiny .TXT file to the desktop. Of course I can fix things by dragging everything back to where it was (plus, I typically do a Restart before that since I figure something has gone amiss with the system so I'd like to clean things out). But what I'd really like is to figure out is why this is happening in the first place so that I can prevent it ... or, at least, so that I can stop doing whatever special behavior is causing it.

Subject pretty much says it all. The Mac is a macBook with Yosemite. The iPhone is an iPhone6. When I plug the iPhone in, select the iPhone, select apps,
I see a list of apps located approximatly in the middle of the screen, with the option to select remove or install. On the right the home screens are shown etc.
I'm unable to select an icon on any of these screens. When I click an icon and attempt to drag it, ITunes wants to move the entire home screen.

I have a 20 gig folder that I access quite often. I want the folder visually on my desktop, but I want the files themselves on my external drive nis there a way to do this, similar to shortcuts with window?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWe've had a Macbook now for about 18 months - no problems. However, last night it was very slow in starting-up and then we found it impossible to move any icons around the screen (click+drag). We have just five small folders on the desktop.
Although 'hiding' is 'on', the dock has also disappeared completely and settings for the dock cannot be changed under preferences.
The Macbook won't turn off under 'shut-down', we have to shut-down by holding pressing 'on' button.
Does anyone know if there's a way to lock my desktop icons (so my curious kids don't mistakenly - or not so mistakenly - move stuff around or into trash). My desktop is kept fairly simple (icons for the various HDs and folders for homework). We've also had the issue of items going *poof* from the dock - which is an easily fixable issue - but a little bit of a nuisance to have to retrieve from time to time.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've noticed in the February desktops thread (in the Pictures category) that some people have their drive icon names appearing beside the icon rather than beneath it. How do you do this? Also, some of the photos show the size of the drive as well as how much space is left. How do you do this? See this post for what I'm talking about. [URL]. Also, in that same post, what the program is that shows the currently playing track on iTunes?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased an ADC to DVI adapter for my G4. I'm connecting a 20'' Gateway Monitor. First everything was okay. But the icons on the desktop were stretching a little. So I changed the resolution and the monitor went into a sleep mode. I restarted the computer, and the Apple logo appears but the monitor falls back into sleep mode. WTF? I disconnected, reconnected, tried about everything. I connected the monitor to my Dell and it works fine.
