IMac (Intel) :: Once In A While Hard Drive Shuts Down Out Of The Blue
Jun 29, 2014Why is the harddrive shutting down by itself? I need a hard shut down and restart of the Mac then. Why is that? How to cope?

IMac :: Blue Screen On Start Up / External Hard Drive?
Jan 19, 2010I bought a Guardian MAXimus hard drive and it seemed to be working fine for the past few weeks. Now all of sudden when starting my Imac 27 I7 the grey screen takes a long time then it get stuck on the blue screen and stays like that. Some times after being on the blue screen it will goto the main page but it takes 3-5 min if it does. When it gets stuck, if I unplug the firewire from the back of the computer from the hard drive it boots up. Any thoughts, their tech support wants me to send the unit back with out doing any testing at home to see what the problem is, seems like a pain in the butt.

Dec 8, 2014I used a new USB flash drive this morning to transfer my pictures to. It showed it was transferring them then the screen went blue and nothing responded. I shut down the computer and unplugged everything but now when I turn the computer back on it shows my home screen and I can see the mouse icon moving around but I am unable to 'click" on any of my programs and get a response.

MacBook Pro Randomly Shuts Down Even After Hard Drive Replacement
May 26, 2012I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro that has been shutting down randomly for quite a while now. It seems to happen most when I have more than one application running but sometimes happens with nothing running at all. It seems that the screen goes off and the sound skips but the keyboard light is still on. I thought it was because I had a bad hard drive but I replaced it and it still randomly shuts down. I ran smart utility and it all passed. I just don't understand what can be causing this? I take this computer to school all the time and it's kind of embarrassing having this shut down on me mid-presentation.

Mar 29, 2012I have iMac 27 and screen problem on start up i have blue vertical lines, when it start i have a lot of blue dots and nothing else. when I connect outside monitor its showing the same.
Just installed lion and still the same problem when it starts blue dots, when startup in safe mode loads of blue lines and dots on the screen.

MacBook Pro :: LED Of Hard Drive Is Blinking Red / Blue
Aug 26, 2014I have an 8TB 4big Quadra with 4 bays. It's been running good for more than a year now. Today, the rear LED of the last drive is blinking red/blue red/blue. The drive seems to be working. My drive have only 1 big blue light in the front and one little blue LED for each disc at the back so I always had 5 blue lights on. Now I have only 4 blue and a red/blue blinking.
The drive is hooked up to my MBP running all the latest software.

Dec 11, 2014I am unable to move files from a 250 GB backup hard drive to a 1.0 TB b/c I keep getting the warning that isn’t enough space. Get Info says that 999.72 GB on it are in use. But the 1.0 TB was almost empty. If I add up the space of each of the 3 or 4 items on it, I get less than 20GB. What’s taking up the other 979 GB?For background, I now have iMac backed up with LaCie 2Big NAS system. The 250 GB is primarily to hold iPhoto Library and backup copies of original photos. the 250 GB is full. So I am trying to switch over from 250 to the 1.0 TB for photos. Moved a few smaller files over, but then could move no more. Thought of running disk utility to erase the 1.0 TB, but now I can’t move the few files on it back to 250 GB, but of error message that it too is full.I did run Repair Disk on 1.0TB before started trying to move files.

Sep 2, 2014I own a 2011 iMac OSX 10.9.4 that has a 250GB ssd and a 1TB hard drive built into it. I take a lot of photos, so usually I copy all of them into the 1TB hard drive for storage. A few days ago I wanted to look through some old pictures and found that all my files from after mid 2012 have completely vanished. There is no trace of any updates to this hard drive after mid 2012. I know I did not misplace these photos because I frequently place new folders in the hard drive and view old memories. When I went to place more folders in, I noticed the amount of folders decreased drastically.
I've tried searching for the photos in the search bar and scrolling through "All My Files", and they are just not there. I've also tried revealing any hidden folders through Terminal. There are no folders with a modification date past mid 2012. The thing is, everything in the SSD hard drive appears normal and updated, only the 1TB hard drive has reverted back to a 2012 state. Is there any way to retrieve the files? Months of work and photos are gone. How could this have happened? And how can I prevent this from happening in the future?

Jul 19, 2010I have a White MacBook version 3,1 made in 2008 w/ the intel ICH8-M AHCI SATA controller. Unfortunately this controller is only 1.5gb/sec. I picked up a WD7500BPVT, WD Scorpio Blue 750gb, with a spec of 3gb/sec. Western Digital tech support assured me it would step down to 1.5gb/sec, no jumpers needed (as it isn't configurable by a hardware jumper). So I install it in my MacBook, boot up from the Snow Leopard install disc but it doesn't see my fancy, schmancy 750gb drive. Is the drive not seen because of a compatibility issue w/ the SATA controller? If so, what is the largest capacity 9.5mm drive someone has installed in a MacBook w/ the intel ICH8-M AHCI SATA controller?

Aug 24, 2014I just got home and I realized the power was out. I bought this iMac literally like two months ago (I actually bought one two months ago but it wouldn't even turn on so they gave me a new one) It was working perfectly fine, and I was writing a report. I left the computer on and left the house only to return hours later with the power out, and when I turn it on it shows the start up screen with the Apple Logo, the little progress circle, and a progress bar that fills up to the end everytime but once it fills up to the end it stays there for a few minutes then the computer shuts off.

Mar 4, 2009I'm desperately trying to get my 3 year old macbook to cooperate - it operates fine although it has been very slow lately but occasionally it will freeze and flash a blue screen, then either just remain frozen or shut down. When I try to turn it back on, it responds as normal, but as the desktop, wireless bars, etc start to load, the pinwheel comes up and then the screen flashes blue, and the whole process of loading the desktop starts over. This repeats endlessly until after turning on and off a few times and waiting about ten minutes it will finally turn back on- something is clearly up and I'm afraid I am going to lose data.

Aug 29, 2014I'm using an external hard drive for mac backup and also to store photo files. I copied some photo files to the drive about two weeks ago and their icon appears, but when I want to open them, I get an error message: "The alias “...” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found." There is also a small arrow on the icon. My other files can be opened okay.
What's also strange is that I found the icon of the external drive in the folder with the picture files, even though I did not drag it there (the main icon is till on my computer's desktop, where it should be.) That icon also has a small arrow on it. When I click on it, it opens and I can see my folders, but the photo folders with the arrow on it will still not open.
I tried ejecting the drive and reconnecting it, but it didn't work. Is there anything I can do to recover the missing photo files, or are they most likely gone? I have deleted these pictures from my computer hard drive. What should I do about the mysterious second external drive icon? Delete it or keep it? Can I somehow use it to restore the photo files?

Jun 19, 2014When my iMac 27" is in sleep mode I have noticed that the hard drive spins up very regularly every 4 or 5 minutes. Also when placed in sleep, the monitor takes about 30 seconds to go black. It also wakes on its own for no apparent reason. No new software has been added, only normal updates, running Lion. Time machine backup is done every couple weeks.

Jun 24, 2014My 2011 21.5" iMac has a 1TB hard drive. In the Finder, it reports 238GB used, 744GB available. But, in Disk Utility and in DiskWave analyzer, it shows 460GB used. "About this Mac" reports 460GB used with 206GB of "backup" that is not there (not invisible files, not showing up in detail reports). When DiskWave reports 460GB used, the detailed list of files & apps only adds up to 238GB - a mystery in that it cannot show the extra "used" space, but only reports free space as 539GB thus not accounting for the remainder. How can I reconcile these differences?

What happened is that I had this Hitachi drive in my PC laptop running Windows 7. Last night I got my MBP and decided to put that Hitachi drive in macbook, then format it and install OS X. Once i put the hard drive in and tried to start MBP i kept getting Windows Recovery Screen because MBP was trying to boot from hard drive directly. Since this is my first ever Mac I didn't know what key to press to be able to choose from DVD. On one of the attempts I actually hit "Proceed Windows normally" and it gave me blue fatal screen saying it was not possible...........

Sep 9, 2009So my brother was upgrading to Snow Leopard from Leopard tonight...and during the install, the time remaining went negative, then shortly thereafter everything froze up so he was forced to power down and since then nothing has been right. He can't restore from backup because apparently there isn't enough space on the disk, then we tried to repair persmissions, it says it cannot and to reformat hard drive...so we do that, reboot and then try to re-install leopard only for now, and when it comes up to choose a destination drive he is just a blank box, his hard drive doesn't show up!
