Is there a show desktop shortcut icon that can be put in the menu bar or even a short key that can quickly minimize all open windows?

If we insert a CD with data on it, NAV scans and it shows up right away on desktop. Only happens with blank CDs. And yes, this is a DVD-RW and CD-RW drive.
I trashed Finder prefs and rebooted machine, same issue. Has anyone seen this and if so, got an answer?

How can I make the Hard Drive icon appear on my desktop?
Info:MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.8)
I just got a new flash drive and it worked fine on my iMac yesterday, and now suddenly it no longer appears on the Desktop or anywhere else on the computer that I can find. But when I pulled it out of the USB drive, it said the device was not removed properly, so it must have recognized something was connected.

The Issue is a duplicate icon of the hard drive appeared on the desktop this AM upon startup.
I don't know what caused it. It just appeared.
It seems to contain everything the start up icon contains when I open it.
I moved it to the trash, but did not erase the trash. I chickened out, so to speak. I removed back to the desktop.
I have the desktop view set to arrange by date modified. It appears approximately half way down the list of icons showing on the desktop. It seems to me that, if it is a duplicate, and by all appearances it is, then it should appear immediately after the real hard drive icon.

Since I tried to install Leopard and uninstalled it again as it has to many bugs (at least with my configuration) my external LaCie 500 Gb USB drive for back-up doesn't show on the desktop anymore. In disk repair the drive appears and repair shows "no problems". On an other internal disk I still have Leopard installed, and if I boot my G5 under Leopard the disk is visible and works fine.

One wired thing I realize when using Leopard is that whenever I mount or connect a drive, it does not show up on the desktop. But in facts that the drive is connected and only shows at the side bar under the Shared panel.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a number of folders on my desktop that contain movie files, jpeg files, you name it. When I try to import from the desktop, the import media window only shows the files and not the folders they are in! I have included a screen shot of what my window looks like when I select the desktop to import media. Again, I have a number of folders that don't show up, only the files in them. This is maddening when trying to import files! I know i can move the files to my hard drive but i am used to desktop work flow.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro running 10.7.3 and Office 2011. A strange thing is that on my desktop I am getting an Excel icon, as though I had a file on my desktop. It is named "6EE8A700". If I right click on "Get Info" it returns nothing. I cannot move the icon to another place on my desktop. If I try to delete it I get the response "The item “6EE8A700” can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted." If I close Excel, even force quit Excel, it still is there. This icon is not always here but has no correlation to whether Excel is running or not.

i am a tad stumped by this issue i'm having right now with my new imac. i noticed one day that none of my desktop aliases show any longer. in fact if i go to the desktop folder through finder my files and such show in there however none of my aliases nor those files show on the actual desktop. another thing i've noticed is that whenever i now try to drag and drop anything to the desktop whether it be a URL from safari or an alias i made in finder the dragged item simply just drags itself back to where i pulled it from.

First thing to say is that the G4 starts fine (remarkably quickly in comparison with the new iMac) and appears to run okay. However, on running the disk utility I’ve found that there is a problem with the hard drive and it won’t verify either the hard drive or repair the permissions. Like many of its kind the optical drive has failed and therefore I can’t use the installation CD to reinstall or anything else. My daughter has been using the G4 for some years but has upgraded to MBP and wants me to take her files and put them on another hard drive and then wipe the G4 clean. At the moment the disk utility will not work at all. So I’ve been attempting to start it up in TDM via FireWire. The G4 starts up okay in TDM (the FireWire symbol appears on the screen) but there is no sign of it on the new iMac. In the light of what I’ve said so far does it seem probable that I will ever be able to get the start-up disk to work? I have connected the two computers via a Wi-Fi network and have been able to see the disc but when I have run the disk utility it has always reverted back to the G4’s own program.

I'm trying to clean up my desktop and am getting annoyed by the disk icon. It's the CD icon for The Sims 3. If I try to move it, it creates a copy, and if I try to trash it, it ejects the disk, and I play the game enough that I don't want to have to be getting it out and in and out and in all the time, especially where I currently have my computer set up.

I'm thinking that the data got transferred but not cataloged. Finder shows about 400 gigs of my hard drive being used, but the files it shows don't come anywhere close to 400 gigs. How can I find out what is really on the hard drive and how can I access my MacBook files I transferred?
View 3 Replies View RelatedOdd stufff, I have a 500 gig Lacie ext HD that my user uses on her Vista machine...
I am setting up a replacement for the Vi$ta machine, which is a 24 inch imac.
I plugged in the ext HD and nothing happened after I powered on the ext HD.
I checked disk utility and it showed up but as a 2TB size ext HD...
I unplugged the Lacie and plugged it back in and all the info showed up correctly.
But ALL the buttons under "First Aid" are greyed out so I cant verify permissions, disk, or repair disk or permissions.

I can barely see digital pictures and the likes. But websites and such i can see fine so long as the colors are light and looking on this site... [URL]
the first image i absolutely cannot see, it is 100% pitch black.. the other bellow it shows up just fine. But the two left/lowest squares on the color table on the very bottom the page both appear the same shade of pitch black.
I can see light but not dark. I tried callibrating and adjusting brightness and contrast.
I've just downloaded Safari 5.1.5 and want to create this icon on my desktop, however, I don't want it as a 'short-cut' icon but as the same icon I see on the docking station.I was previously able to do this with Safari 5.0.3.

I have had this proble for awhile and I can not figure it out. The Trash Icon does not change when the trash icon is full or empty, appears to be full at all times even after a secure trash empty. Open up trash and there are no files inside and the file count is zero but the icon on dock remains the full icon.
