One wired thing I realize when using Leopard is that whenever I mount or connect a drive, it does not show up on the desktop. But in facts that the drive is connected and only shows at the side bar under the Shared panel.

I did some searches on this site as well as google but could not find what I was looking for. How can I mount a server on my OSX 10.5.6 desktop? Can I use FTP? Do I have to use another protocol?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am replacing my G5 (10.5) Xserve with a late 2008 Xserve (10.6). This server is primarily a web server, with a small amount of mail traffic.I keep my 'webfolder' on a RAM disk. All of my pages are dymanic php/mysql, so they can't be cached. But reading from RAM is so fast, you'd never know it.This is the command I used in 10.5 to create a 1 GB RAM disk at boot: [code]/usr/sbin/diskutil erasevolume HFS+ "web-ram" `/usr/bin/hdiutil attach -notremovable -nomount ram://2200000`[/code]Not the "notremovable", that flag makes the system treat the mounted disk image (or in this case, the RAM disk), like a real physical disk, and not a mounted disk image. When you use this flag, the ram disk will actually show up with a regular hard drive icon. Without this flag, it shows up as a white disk image.But this flag doesn't work in 10.6. According to the man page, it's still there. But when I use it, I get permissions errors. I am using it with sudo (from the command line, or as root via lanuchdeamons). As I look closer at my errors, It appears that what might be happening is that the diskutil command is being run as root, but the hdiutil command inside of it, is not.
Anyway this is about more than just the icon. When the ram disk is mounted as a real disk, its harder to eject, which is good because it's my web folder and I don't want it going anywhere. AND when its mounted that way, I can use time machine to back it up. Which works out to be a great system for that.

I just got a new flash drive and it worked fine on my iMac yesterday, and now suddenly it no longer appears on the Desktop or anywhere else on the computer that I can find. But when I pulled it out of the USB drive, it said the device was not removed properly, so it must have recognized something was connected.

Since I tried to install Leopard and uninstalled it again as it has to many bugs (at least with my configuration) my external LaCie 500 Gb USB drive for back-up doesn't show on the desktop anymore. In disk repair the drive appears and repair shows "no problems". On an other internal disk I still have Leopard installed, and if I boot my G5 under Leopard the disk is visible and works fine.

I have a number of folders on my desktop that contain movie files, jpeg files, you name it. When I try to import from the desktop, the import media window only shows the files and not the folders they are in! I have included a screen shot of what my window looks like when I select the desktop to import media. Again, I have a number of folders that don't show up, only the files in them. This is maddening when trying to import files! I know i can move the files to my hard drive but i am used to desktop work flow.

i am a tad stumped by this issue i'm having right now with my new imac. i noticed one day that none of my desktop aliases show any longer. in fact if i go to the desktop folder through finder my files and such show in there however none of my aliases nor those files show on the actual desktop. another thing i've noticed is that whenever i now try to drag and drop anything to the desktop whether it be a URL from safari or an alias i made in finder the dragged item simply just drags itself back to where i pulled it from.

it doesn't even show up in Adobe Bridge, for pete's sake.. this is ABSURD..
but on the pc you see it right away in Windows Explorer... no reason whatsoever why the mac shouldn't do this also...

I have an iMac G4. When I insert a CD it no longer shows up on the desktop. I've checked under System Preferences and chose CD/DVD. I made sure that "When you insert a blank CD" the Finder Opens and "When you insert a blank DVD the Finder Opens".
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust had my 3 yrs old Mac Mini decomission and set aside in the living hall as a media server recently. While I use the mini primary to watch movies, in which it does great with XBMC, I would like to have the ability to Remote Login (GUI) into the mini WHILE my wife is watching her fav movie CONCURRENTLY without any disturbance. I guess this a old topic i'm revisiting here. I've been googling around and searching this forum, but yet till now, the closest solution I've came to is having OSXvnc (Vine Server) running along with fast using switching, plus some VNC client etc. The worst part of this approach is, each remote user have to log into the physical machine for fast user switching. This is just soooo dodgy as compare to the windoze variant. I'm posting to see, if anyone have a better solution that:
1. each remote user dun have to physically login first
2. I can have concurrent session running (either remote, or local-wife watching movie)
Does the Mac OSX SL Server have something to offer to this problem? And also, I've discovered that The Apple Remote Desktop is more for a network administrator sort of app, totally not related to allowing multiple concurent remote GUI Sessions.
Since yesterday the mail programme on my iMac does not download e-mails from the gmail server, but luckily I still can send e-mails. On the iPhone I still receive e-mails and I can send e-mails. The iPhone is connected to the internet either via 3G or the same router I am using for the iMac.
Via the Safari browser I do have access to all my e-mails on the gmail server. Mail: Version 4.5 (1084)

After installing SL on a separate drive in a 2008 MacPro, the none of the four disks mount on the desktop. Also, the Migration Assistant doesn't recognize any disks.

But the program doesn't actually use the CD, its just verifying that I own a copy. Is there anyway I could start the program without actually having the CD in my drive? Anyway of making the Computer think that the CD is actually present, such as mounting the CD image on the Desktop?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with my desktop background i tried clicking "change desktop background" but it wouldn't show the window where i can change the background, i tried the right click to a specific image and it doesn't say about using it as a desktop background. doesn't require removing nor deleting certain files i'm very wary about eleting certain files i own to where if i did delete or remove a file or program the computer would be messed up and i would have to find that Mac OS X 10.5 disk to restart it all over again and rebuild everything.

I get a green light in my Network Account Server, but queries against LDAP return no results. My end goal is to be able to dictate to Profile Manager what LDAP groups are allowed to enroll devices. I tested on our internal network on a test server and get the same results. Anyone have any luck connecting a Lion Server to LDAP and actually being able to view and utilize users and groups?

I'm in need of the Profile Manager from Lion Server for administering iPads in our environment.I understand that to do this really well within the environment, I'll need to be able to have a static IP and I will be able to arrange that. My question is more about what I may lose on my macbook if I go ahead and bump the OS to Lion Server instead of Desktop. The biggies on my machine for usage are, of course, iTunes, Parallels, logmein, evernote, MS Office, Garage Band, Logic, iMovie, etc.Â
What negative impacts am I in for if I move to server on this machine? Alternately, is there any way I can make a true, cheap OTA Profile Manager (a la MDM) on a Lion Desktop or even a windows desktop or server? I can't be spending a lot on this, but I could certainly afford Lion Server (but not a dedicated new machine for it).Â
I have recently purchased a Mac Mini with Lion X. I also have a couple of MBPs. I'd like to have the Mac Mini act as the place where all the Time Machine backups go (I have a 1 TB external disk hooked up to the Mac Mini). I'm new in Mac, coming from UNIX/Linux systems, my problem is managing devices in Snowleopard OS.
Recently I bought the HP ScanJet G4050. With a lot of difficulties I installed the software, because the manufacturer provided was useless, but finally I was able to get scans into adobe reader and also into the other software.
At work we got an electric break, and my MBP continued working but the scanjet didn't. So after this failure when I'm trying to scan something, the system reports "unable to start (scaner was not found)", nevertheless the scaner works in another equipment (in a Windows XP mini laptop, for example)
I'm looking for the way to do manual mount of the device, in similar way we do this in Unix/linux:

But this -for now- didn't work.
I'm faced with the daunting task of migrating from Panther Server to Leopard Server. The present server is the Primary DNS serving several web sites (some of which is running MySQL databases). I have the luxury that we've bought 2 new Xserves last year, but due to time constraints, I haven't time until now to seriously consider the steps to this daunting task. We're also currently using a linux box for the firewall (it does no routing, just iptables rules). I want to migrate away from this also and utilize either Apple's firewall or a router. Is there anything out there on the web that will help me in this process? I'm terrified of messing up the production environment, especially since the Xserve is our DNS.
