Intel Mac :: Add External Hdd Drives To Time Machines?
Jun 7, 2012
My iMac is running out of hard drive space as its the central computer we use to run Apple TV from. I woudl like to add an external hard drive and woudl prefer to plug it into one of the RJ45 ports on the time machine and save all large movie, audio and image files onto the hard drive -

I have two external drives daisy-chained to my iMac for Time Machine,Superduper bootable back-up and a further Superduper back-up of my old Snow Leopard drive. Since upgrading from 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 I get an irritating message each time I awake the computer from sleep that another computer is using my network and the computer name has to be changed. Changing the name as advised in Sharing of System Preferences does not solve the problem. Only disconnecting the external drives makes the warning go away but this is self defeating since I then cannot use Time Machine and/or Superduper.

I´m pleases with my Imac 21.5" Sandy Bridge I5 processor med 14 gb ram. I dont use Time Capsule (Have considered it) but instead i bought 2 Eks HD a´500GB. The one of them was connected to Time Machine and there has been no trouble what so ever. With that one. My idea to use the other manual for my pictures. Then i could easily control my pics and allso find pics for frinds etc and easy copy them. But i made a mistake when the HD i´ve been using for time machine was running out of space. I was´nent aware that it just would begin to overwrite so i still had the latest. So instead i took the other and connected that as a time machine. But now i have 2 time machines. I have tried everything i have ekspertise to but every time i plugg it in the imac regognize it as time machine. I allso have windows installed as a parallel desktop wich function perfectly. From there i have tried to format the HD, and the same i´ve triedfrom a laptop but non of it is helping.

i have two exact same 17 inch MBPs i am thinking on selling one , one has a lot of stickers and marks on it and the data on that is not at all important (i can format the hard drive no problem). the other one body has very clean and data on that is important lots and lots of photos and videos. i want to sell the one which has clean body so i can get better $ for it. it is possible to just swap hard drives between these two identical MBPs and sell ? would that make any different in performance and also the serial number on ABOUT THIS MAC is that written on hard drive or some place else?

My original 1st iMac (3.06 ATI) has a "OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670s" dvd drive. My identical replacement has a "PIONEER DVD RW DVRTS08. Is this the norm across the range? I'm assuming both are similar?

On Final Cut Pro 7, I would have my computer with an external hard drive with footage and I would edit on that. I would then email the small project file to a co-editor who would pick up where I left off. It was a very fast baton pass because he had his own computer with a clone of my external hard drive with the footage. We would pass the baton back and forth all the time.Â
I am trying to figure out how I can do this in Final Cut Pro X. I understand you can transfer/copy the library, but that would involve copying 100s of GBs at a time. Possibly TBs. And please note that I'm not just looking to copy sequences alone (or "projects" as they're now called in FCP X). In FCP7, the project file would contain all organization, labeling, tagging, etc of all clips, as well as all sequences.Â
Is there a way two pass the baton in the way I am looking for? This is imperative to my workflow.Â

I have a 500 gb external that I've been backing up Time Machine onto--I also use the drive to store my movies (about 100 gb and increasing) but I'm getting to the point where time machine is taking over. Apple suggested partitioning my drive--does anyone else think that this will work or is there some other option that I have? I've thought about manually deleting certain Time Machine back ups but hate to have to do that constantly.

So right now I have 2 external hard drives, a 2TB MyBook Mirror edition, set at RAID 0 so its a full 2TB, and a 1TB MyBook Home Edition. I also have three LaCie 1TB drives to back up the MyBook drives.
How I back up is basically copy the contents over to the backups once a month. The problem is, using USB (my only option) takes about 24 hours per TB. Backing up 3 days a month? Not fun.
Can Time Machine do this better? I still have Tiger, so can't test it yet but it seems tedious to do things my way. I would rather be able to plug them in and sync every few weeks and not have to replace every file, just the ones that changed or were added. Can this be done?
I don't keep the drives connected 24/7 so it would have to be manual, and also can Time Machine back up a 2TB drive to 2 1TB drives? The are stuck in enclosures so i have to connect the 2 separately through USB, can't use RAID.
If Time Machine is not the answer, is there some third party program the would not require me to re-copy every file? It would be great if I could save some time doing this.

I have an external hard drive that I use with my MBP at work. I'd like to buy another external hard drive to keep at home an also use with Time Machine to backup when at home. Will this work with 10.5.6? What I mean is, will Time Machine work if I plug in another hard drive at home, and still work when I plug in my other drive at work?

I see a lot of info about problems with various external drives working with Time Machine. I have Lion 10.7.3 and find that my old external drive that worked with PCs doesn't work. So, does Apples have a list of recommended esternal drives or at least a list of ones Apple knows are compatible?

Is it possible to set up a backup between two external drives?
i use time machine to back up my imac onto an external 2T.
i also have two external 3T drives. i am looking for redundancy of data, tried software RAID and it failed. i also see some limitations with RAID that a backup would avoid.

I was experiencing intermittent problems reading a CF card through an external multicard reader. I also had connected a Seagate external hard drive. With some trial and error disconnecting, connecting and restarting, I could get the CF to read. Now I can't see any external drives - neither the CF or Seagate are recognized.

I have 2 drives on my iMac but only one is showing up..how can I get them both to back up? The one that is getting backed up is from my old laptop, and I really don't need it as most of the data is in my newer iMac drive. If necessary, I would like to switch the back up to the newer system.

I bought an iMac about 2 weeks ago and when accessing files from external hard drives I will get the spinning beach ball and all of the programs will become unresponsive and the only way to relieve the problem is to power down the computer. We have two 3 TB Seagate HDs connected via USB.

I have about 6 external USB drives that are mostly 1TB or 1.5TB. I have been trying to copy files from old ones to new ones but if I plug in more than two they keep unmounting with the message that the drive was not unmounted properly and may now be damaged. I have two so far that are corrupted. I have tried three different powered USB hubs thinking it was lack of power but it made no difference. This problem occurs on my 26" iMac Running Lion and on my new PowerBookPro running Mavericks.Â

I have three external harddrives all of which are connected through different ports, all show up in finder, all show up in disk utility, but none of them will show up on my desktop. I looked at a few other posts similar to mine but the answers given to other problems have not worked. There is no way all three of my cords are causing a connection problem and I have repaired and verifyd all the drives and still nothing.

I have a question regarding Time Machine functionality. Here's my situation. I have two hard drives in my Pro: one that operates as a Boot drive, and one for storage. Right now I have Time Machine set up to backup my storage drive, but I was wondering if it was possible to have plug in a second external drive and use it to back up the Boot drive. I searched for a similar thread, but couldn't really find anything. Has anybody successfully done this?

Im new to the whole time machine/external HD thing. When I plug my external in and time machine does its thing, will it overwrite the existing copy of my computer that the external already has? Also, will it copy my windows partition (and everything within) or do I do that seperately?

Ever since our design studio upgraded to InDesign CS4, some of our machines are now VERY slow to open documents (it takes documents approx. 713 times longer to open). Also, just using InDesign seems much slower than CS3 (like dragging things, typing, etc.).
The funny thing is this problem only seems to affect our designers who have PowerPC G5 Macs not the ones with Intel Macs. I realise CS4 will be optimised for Intel machines, but surely it shouldn't be this much slower on G5s?

I've been having a few problems with my TM backups since I got my new iMac (my MBA is working fine).
Something strange that I've noticed is when I enter into Time Machine (the program). Sometimes I see a bunch of my backups with times and dates where I can scroll through the different saves and restore if I want to. Other times though when I go into TM I only see the current save point. I can't scroll back and it only says Today on the right without any other save points. It is almost like I've only done one TM backup.
The other strange thing that I see is if I look at iStat. Sometimes it shows two Time Capsule hard drives and other times it shows only one. If I choose to change disk in Time Machine preferences the Time Capsule is listed twice. I don't think it has anything to do with a partition (which I never did) because both drives show the same used and free info (something like 377 free of 461) and I only have a 500GB drive.

I have a 2009 imac with snow leopard. I want to set up my time machine with an external USB or Firewire hard drive, but I'm not sure which would be better or less costly. Need some advice on which brands would be best. I have a My Book on USB right now, but as it's configured for both Mac and Windows files (I use Parallels) I cannot use it for Time Machine. Also, I've been reading that rebooting through Time Machine could take a long time, but if i could partition the new drive and make some of it a reboot disk alone, that would be faster. I don't know how to do that, or which external drive to get that would work best for that arrangement.
