IMac :: Which One Is Better/an 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Or An 2.8 GHz Intel Quad Core?
Dec 18, 2009first, I didn�t know if this thread should be here or in Buying Tips, but anyway. My doubt is about the brand new 27� iMac�s processor, If I should buy a more GHz one, but with only two cores, or should I buy little bit less GHz one, but with four cores.
It really worth pay $200 more? It really worth the four cores? My main needs are run CS4, some Final Cut, maybe Logic Studio, and switch between different OS's (OS X, Windows, and Linux). I think even a 21.5� model would be more than enough, but I just wonder If Quad Core gonna give me more power (I hope so).

Mar 12, 2010I am obviously not using the correct search terms to find this info, but I want to upgrade my iMacs RAM. The system I have is a refurb 21.5 iMac with 3.06 GHz dual core processor. I want to go from the current 4Gig to 8Gig. Everytime I check the different sites for their online memory guides, I see the 3.06 Intel in the 24" but not in the 21.5. Are they the same? I just want to order the right memory the first time.

Apr 5, 2012My one week old iMac 2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5. first started problems by not goping to sleep even when I forced it.
I shut it down using the shut off button and unplugging it from power for more than 5 munites.
I turned it back on, it does the usual startup chime and then gray screen. I have restarted twice from the shot off button and still getting the same result.

Aug 4, 2010I'm looking to buy a new Imac 21.5 inch but I'm undecided on whether to go for the 3.06 Ghz base model or the 3.2 Ghz model. I'd be using it for internet, general office work, a little video and quite a lot of photo editing and cataloguing. Possibly a bit of gaming but not much and nothing too intensive. I think 500GB HDD in the base model would be ample storage space for my needs. My main concern is whether it is worth spending the extra ?250 essentially for the 5670 GPU with more graphics memory in the 3.2Ghz model over the 4670 GPU in the base model. I'm hoping to get around 4 years usage out of the machine before I start looking to upgrade. Would it be worth spending the extra for more graphics power or would I be better off buying the base model and possibly adding extra memory?

Mar 13, 2009I have a 3.06Ghz 24in imac. Safari crashes a lot. Don't know what to do. I've reset Safari several times, and downloaded Safari 4 in order to uninstall and reinstall a new Safari 3. Safari version is 3.2.1. I've reset pram, restarted, and verified permissions several times over. Crashes happen almost exclusively when multiple windows are open. Other than that, I really am not sure of a pattern. Also, the restore tabs from last browsing session rare restores everything. I guess it's a buggy feature.

I am wondering if apple updates the iMacs can I send mine in becuase I probably won't get mine for 3-5 days and the updates would come on Tuesday. If I can send it I'm what do I have to do and how can I do it. Also if they changes the ram to 2gb standard do I get 100 back because I updated it. Apple updated it to the new imacs at no aditional cost, I now got this: 24" imac 2.8ghz, 2gb ram, 320gb hdd, 256mb ati graphics card and wireless keyboard and mouse. Also from amazon for 200 dollars less than what apple charges i got the logitech z-5500 digital 5.1 surround sound speakers.

Apr 1, 2012My iMac stopped booting. The fans and hard-drive spin up but the screen stays black and I can hear that the hard drive isn't been read after the initial spin up.
I decided to open it up to take a look at the diagnostic LEDs to see if it might help me diagnose the problem (the most obvious failure is the logic board). I can't find the LEDs anywhere, where are they? Does my iMac even have diagnostic LEDs?
The other possibility is that I can't find the lights because they aren't lighting up. The fans, the hard drive and the CD drive all spin up fine so at least I know that there is some power running though it.

Nov 24, 2010I have a problem with my iMac 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (2 GB 667 MHz DDR 2 SDRAM), running OSX 10.6.5. OSX crashes and freezes all the time. Nothing works anymore. Sometimes it just freezes, and I can only move my cursor, but nothing reacts anymore. Sometimes the screen blacks (or sometimes blanks) out or shows the weird moving colours as shown on the photo I just took below: After restart, it often happens again and again. Then the iMac is fine for a couple of days, before it freezes again. Can anyone diagnose the problem from the info above?

I have read several guides online on how to access the processor (taking apart the case, etc), and I am confident I am capable of undertaking the task. After reading this guide I feel like I will be able to do it myself (with the help of my electrical/mechanical engineering friend (still hasn't decided his major yet! I'm a physics student, so I should be capable as well, ha! Anyways as you can see, that guide gives very little information as to what CPUs can be used. I looked up the processor that they used in the guide (the T5600) and all of the results came up for a mobile processor. I have heard in the past that most of Apple's desktops contained "laptop grade" hardware, so it would make sense if it contained mobile components.

Oct 22, 2009So the older Mac Pro's from 2008 have 2 2.8ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon processors, without hyperthreading, for a total of 8 cores, and the top of the line iMac has a Quar Core i7 2,8ghz with hyperthreading for a total of 8 (virtual) cores.
With the ghz being the same but less "real" cores, but probably newer CPU architecture, which CPU will actually be faster?

So, I am going to be selling my late 2008 15" MacBook Pro this week to get a new 27" iMac and I just need some legitimate advice from those "in the know" on processors.
I plan on having this iMac for about 3 years to do the following tasks:
1.) Record and edit HD cable (1080i) from an Elgato EyeTV HD - will include some encoding of 2+ hour sports game recordings
2.) Some light editing of 720p iPhone 4 clips in iMovie
3.) Surf the web, iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, and all the other standard stuff
Assuming budget is an issue, would you recommend me spending the extra money for a Quad Core i5 iMac or would I be ok based on the info above just going with the base Dual Core i3 model?
Like, will there be a considerable difference in the two machines (factoring in processor and graphics card) that will really be worth the extra $300 - $400 for 3 years of use?

Jan 19, 2010I have all the latest updates, and had XP installed until like 2 hours ago. I got a copy of Windows 7 Pro through my school and tried installing it.
I get passed the beginning Windows is loading files screen, then it freezes at the "Starting Windows" screen.
I don't understand how it can be my cd when I can do the beginning phase and boot to it, but I can't ever even begin to install because it freezes at the Starting Windows screen.
I have installed 32-bit XP numerous times, 64-bit and 32-bit vista... so what is the deal? Why isn't this working..
