I installed iStat 2 days ago and just yesterday I noticed that my HD space slowly decreases; not by a lot. For example, yesterday it said that I had used only 12.06 GB of space. A little later it said 12.07 GB and then 12.08 or 12.09 (I don't remember which one). Today it started in the low 13's and then it went to 13.07 and then 13.09. Currently, it's at 13.17 GB used.

I have the MacBook Pro 2010 13" and recently I've noticed my disc space is slowly decreasing with use.Im not downloading files or anything, but today I lost around 600 MB of space, I just kept opening my Finder to discover less and less disc space each time.
Is this normal or do I have a problem, this is the first time I've noticed it in the month and a half I've owned the machine.
I've noticed in the last few days that I've been gradually, but steadily losing disk space.
I've not downloaded any files bigger than a few Kilobytes (that I've kept) and all my email is IMAP, not POP, so I'm not actually downloading any mails.
A couple of days ago, my disk space available at the bottom of the Finder window said 152.36GB. Today it says 151.45GB.
I've checked my Download directory and other areas for any new data that I might have absent-mindedly downloaded and kept that I don't need, but haven't found anything.
Is there something else I should be checking and clearing from time to time?
my freespace on my hd is decreasing even though i have deleted all the files that i don't need and i know i still have about 23gb free. i read one note about going to console and see what is eating up my free space. and here is what's going on: Â

when i go to storage i have 99gb of apps and 95gb of other the rest is some movies and music but i used to have over 89gb of free space and i have barely downloaded stuff on my macbook and now i don't even have 1.5gb of free space every time i power down and turn back on my mac i loose space, does any one know how to free some of the storage space under "other"

Running Snow Leopard on a Late 2007 MacBook, and I booted it up today to see that I had 15 GB left (normal). 4 hours later, I get an alert that I'm running low on Hard Disk space, so I open a new Finder window to see how much space I have. It tells me 10 MB. After 5 minutes, this dropped down to 0 KB, and all of my applications opened "paused", and I had to force quit them. I don't have 0 KB left, I have 15 GB, but Finder isn't telling me that.

Also, if anyone knows of a way to kill some of the unnecessary 3rd party menu items that don't have an option in their preferences to not display the menu item.
I'm the owner of a Macbook Pro with 4 gig RAM and a 320gb harddrive. However, I have noticed that the hard drive space is decreasing slightly for seemingly no reason. Case in point, today it went from 197.66gb to 197.50 whilst I was watching TV and just before it went down further for no reason whatsoever.
Although its not a big deal it does arouse my curiosity and annoy me. Is it just virtual memory that will eventually come back or something more sinister? If it continues for a long time the space lost will eventually add up. Since I'm planning on soon buying an iMac these are the sorts of things I need to know.
two days ago the dreaded pop up appeared saying disk space was low.. i cleared out some files and opened up 20GB of free space. well the pop up appeared again a couple minutes ago. And I can visibly see it decreasing mb after mb.. over 20 gigs lost in two days?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm running an intel Imac 2.16ghz c2d with 3 gigs memory and 250 gig hard drive. Here's how it started. I was surfing on the Flock browser one day, and then all of a sudden, my hard drive space was full! I wasn't downloading anything. I checked my log folder in the library and lo and behold, there was almost 2 gigs stored in the console folder! What? Anyway, I cleaned it out and my Mac is now under routine maintenance via OnyX. I also use virus barrier x5 and nothing is wrong with my Mac. I also run disk inventory x and run activity monitor. Now, I got my hard drive space back at 200.37 gigs. But sometimes when I reboot, my hard drive shows it at 200.48, then as time goes by while I surf, it slowly decreases to 200.27 gigs, then it will slowly go back up to 200.37 gigs, and so forth. I'm not downloading anything, just surfing. Has this happened to you guys before? Is the virtual memory causing this? Are there any cure for this besides formatting the hd again? What's going on?

I have tried various cleaning apps such as CleanMyMac, Spring Cleaning and Lion Cache Cleaner, but they don't make any difference. The drive has plenty of free space. Today when I tried to use my computer, I got an error message saying that my startup disk was almost full. This was weird because just a week before when I checked it, I had almost half of my 500 GB hard drive available. I went and deleted a bunch of stuff I didn't need, and restarted the computer, and I got my hard drive space back up to 221 GB of free space. Only a few minutes later, I looked at it again and I only had 211 GB. Throughout the day, my available space has slowly been going away. The nights almost over and now I only have 186 GB left.

On pressing the power button on the back of my brand new iMac i5 (Bought in store on Nov 21st), the white screen appears after 5-7 seconds and then the boot time is incredibly fast since I have an SSD installed. But I'm disturbed now with the fact that the white screen takes such a long time and I was wondering if anyone else had a similar issue?

is there some sort of disk cleanup i can do (before this i had PCs)? or is there some sort of easy fix (deleting extra copies of photos, etc) that i can do?
i do have a lot of photos on the computer (they're in a folder and also in iphoto) and some videos, but the videos from my video camera are all stored on my external drive.
This problem started after a power surge a few weeks ago. The surge protector fried, but seemed to save the computer in the process. Symptoms are:If the Mac goes to sleep, the fans eventually go in hyperspeed mode and it's impossible to wake.Boot time is over 6 minutes. 1.5 minutes on the gray Apple, then 5 minutes on blue screen.In verbose mode, I get some IOKitWaitQuiet error just before the blue screenI repaired permissions, checked the disk with Disk Utility, and zapped the PRAM. Here's the console report of a restart. Every since I upgraded my OS to 10.9, my performance has been going downhill. Now, even though I have reformatted my hard drive and have not even put any new data on it, it takes 45 minutes to restart and 25 minutes for me to open the window to write this message. Below is my system info. Why my system seems to have slowed down so much. You can see there is nothing on the hard drive to slow it down.

The available free space( when I click on Hard Disk symbol and then information) shows 11.5 GB and 26.5 GB used space.
When I manually add up what I have on all my files it comes to only 21.5 GB Where is the other 5 GB?
OS X 10.5.6, it's a .sparsebundle file. Total capacity 30GB, taking up 30GB on disk. There are only 10GB of files on the image. Trash is empty. I've zeroed my hard drive, and the disk image, and checked Whatsize.
I would like to gain back some space on my Macbook's HD. I would like to:
1) Burn all the photos and videos on DVD's. Re this, once burned, I'll delete them from the HD, via iPhoto.(show files, etc.) What would happen with the events? Say that, in the future, I want to import 20% of the photos with their corresponding events (already deleted from iPhoto): is this feasible?
2) Is there an app within Leopard OS (not Snow Leopard) that would allow me to change photo and video size, all at once or not. (batch processing?) Videos and photos where imported within iPhoto app.
I have had my Simple Drive 500GB External Hard Drive for some time now but I have noticed recently that whenever I delete a file from it the hard drive doesn't give the space back.
For Example: I Have 143.95GB on the External Hard Drive free but when I delete a 20gig file it doesn't give the space back on the External Hard Drive, it stays at 143.95GB. Also, this happens with many of my flash drives etc.
Timeline won't back up because it says there is not enough space on my external drive. This never happened before.I have 10.6.8. I just restored my new hard drive from Timeline. It was an easy restoration. The first time I backed up on Timeline, it said there was not enough space. I do have my external drive partitioned. I thought old backups were deleted when the space was needed.
