Aug 8, 2009I ran a system defrag on my Macbook pro with techtool Pro and after the defrag is done, if I run the defrag again it shows on the graph a specific strand of the hard drive is still fragmented its minuscule but no matter what it doesn't go away and it doesn't leave em with one contiguous block of free space... whats going on?

Jun 10, 2010I've installed and deleted quite a few programs off my MBP so far and I'm curious if there is a function/utility similar to Windows Disk Defrag on a Mac? In the event that there are some files I forgot to delete, I just wanted to make sure I got rid of all the files and not have old uninstalled program data hogging up space on my hard drive. I'm still in a Windows state of mind since I just recently purchased my MBP so I'm not sure if the MBP will automatically remove all the files once a program is deleted or if some residual program files still remain even after I delete a program.

i know you's are going to say "macs dont need to be defragged" but they do
reason being when you use a mac for around a year or so and seriously load up your hard drive it generates files which cannot be moved. (files over 20mb's) why do i need to move them?
when you are creating a boot camp partition it needs to move files away from the partitioning part of your drive but some files cannot be moved without a full defrag and nothing including repairing the disc or repairing permissions can fix it to move those files even if you boot of the cd.
the only 2 things that can fix it is 1: a defrag or 2: a format
so! anyone know of a freeware bootable defrag for osx because im not up for a format.
Software :: Formatting Hdd Or Defrag?
Dec 30, 2009I've been advised to format my start up HDD as the data on my HDD is dispersed over such a large area, so I cannot partition my HDD.
I am just wondering the best way to format my HDD, whether it be to use a bootable clone on a separate external HDD, or to format using the start up disk (i.e. as restarting the computer pressing c, and going on from there on?) and having a back up on time machine, and restoring after. As these are backups, this means everything will be exactly the same doesn't it? As I have been advised to do this to make the area smaller that they cover, wont it be exactly the same?
OS X :: Defrag Files For World Of Warcraft?
Nov 30, 2008Since I got my Macbook Pro back in June, boot times and loading times of apps seems to of gotten longer. I ran iDefrag to see what was going on and the most fragged file was lichking.MPQ which, as most of you may know, is the new World of Warcraft expansion. it is a large file (2.4gb).
iDefrag reported my HDD being 28% fragmented.
My question is, should or do I need to defrag? It has been asked a 1,000,000 times I know but I just can't seem to get a simple yes or no answer anywhere.
Some people say yes, some say no and some say defragging my mac caused a hard drive failure etc..

I need to make sure my computer is taken well care of. I don't want it to have files and things all over the place in the next 6 months and something happens. Windows you need it for sure. Used windows for over who knows how many years. BUT with a MAC no one can give a definite answer? Why is that? I getting confused and getting annoyed. First someone said that you don't need it as the computer does it for you 'overnight'. Then, there is some who says to do it every 2 weeks?

Would booting to CCC on my external drive, erasing the hard drive through Utilities and then copying the CCC disk image back to the hard drive resolve the problem or just repeat it?

Oct 29, 2008I recently deleted my Bootcamp gaming partition so I could make it smaller. I then realized I need more space and so later on I deleted it again and tried to make it bigger. I got the infamous "files cannot be moved" error which is Apple's nice way of saying "sorry we don't build in good defrag tools for large files, just small ones". Suffice to say, I cant install Windows without either doing a bootdisk defrag of my system using a third party tool like iDefrager or doing a fresh fromat of the hard drive.
I think I would like to do a fresh format as its quicker and cleans out your system but my problem is thus: I dont know if I should back up my mp3s, pictures, aim convo logs, etc. to an external and just recopy them over with fresh installs of all my apps or if I should do a Time Machine restore (either the restore in the system disc or a restore after a fresh format and install of OS X). I have a Time Capsule so lag is a factor there. Which is the best option for me to pursue!?

Jun 20, 2010I do a lot of video work on my iMac, files in excess of 250mb, adding..deleting..modifying, etc. I have read that this OS will automatically defrag files of approx 20mb or less. With the work I do on my iMac, and the size of the files I move around my HD, should I be concerned about the need to defrag my computer? And if so, what 3rd party software?

In fact I can still use this laptop it is just extremely hard since the screen does not light up. The person that smashed it ended up buying me a new laptop so I have this beat up (and I mean the shell is destroyed) laptop with quite a lot of functioning parts.
Now a few weeks ago my girlfriends Grandad spilled a beer on his brand new 2010 Macbook. The logic board is shot so it is almost cheaper for him to buy a brand new laptop.
Would it be possible for me to take the logic board out of my 2008 Black Macbook and put it into his 2010 White Macbook?

Oct 27, 2010By far the most interesting benchmark trend coming out of the latest Macbook Air tests is that of the 320M GPU - is this thing somehow clocked differently than in the Macbook/Macbook Pro?

The latest Macbook Pro 13" 2.4 Ghz gets 33 FPS in Call of Duty 4, whereas the Macbook Air 13" (using the same 320M GPU) gets 40 FPS. Even the 1.4Ghz 11" gets 37! So obviously we're not talking about a CPU limited game - the only explanation then is that the GPU in the Macbook Air is clocked differently than in the 13" Macbook Pro, no?

Again the Macbook Air clocked at 2.13 ghz is beating the 2.4 Ghz Macbook Pro in World of Warcraft and Portal! And in WOW the 11" 1.4ghz still manages to beat the 2.4 Ghz 13" Macbook Pro.
Anyone have any additional insight into this? Anand did a terrible job of testing these for gaming performance, unfortunately, so he may not have even noticed this trend.

The main problem I have with my current MacBook is that its heavy - I need something lightweight to easily carry to school and class for note-taking and such.
How is the Air better or worse, and would I be losing anything significantly by replacing the 08 plastic MB with a MBA?
