Oct 23, 2010I have a Samsung External DVD Drive, will this work with the Air? I see no reason why it wouldn't.... I mean, it looks ugly but it's just as functional.

View 3 Replies View RelatedDo you have to have an external drive to burn CDs with the MBA?
So far, I've avoided getting the superdrive by using the remote disk option, but I tend to burn CDs and data onto DVDs from time to time. Is there a work around for doing that without the superdrive or are there no other options?
I'm looking for a good/easy to use external hard-drive for my MacBook.

The Apple Mouse (the one before the Mighty Mouse) really is a clunker. I'm on my third mouse in less than two years and the trackball stopped working each time. Poor quality indeed. Was looking to upgrade to the Mighty Mouse but not sure now. Apple never was very good in the mouse dept. (remember the "puck"?). So, is there a fix for this trackball or any suggestions on third party mice?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI do a lot of video work on my iMac, files in excess of 250mb, adding..deleting..modifying, etc. I have read that this OS will automatically defrag files of approx 20mb or less. With the work I do on my iMac, and the size of the files I move around my HD, should I be concerned about the need to defrag my computer? And if so, what 3rd party software?

View 19 Replies View RelatedOk I connected my Air to a LG drive GSA-E50L USB DVD drive. It seems to work fine in Windows and OS X. For booting it does work with the OS X dvd's.
However, it refuses to boot from a Windows XP installation disk.
I've tried different boot disks aswell. No luck.
When I boot pressing the option key, the DVD drive is one of the options. It says "Windows CD". I then choose it. It starts reading the CD and then the apple sign is displayed. The apple sign changes into a stop sign and goes back to the apple sign again.
Does anyone know what is going on?
Has anyone been able to boot from a Windows disk with a non Apple USB drive?
I've ordered the 15" i7 with HiRes Glossy and the 500GB 72k last week. Now i'm one of the few lucky germans waiting for a volcano to stop bitching around so my new toy can get here... To shorten the waiting time, i've been a little around this forum reading about this and that. I came across several discussions about whether to use a SSD or a HDD. Reading them a thought crossed my mind: Why not remove the DVD-Drive (i use my DVD-Drive maybe once every 2-3 monts... for that an external drive would do) and replace it with a medium sized (say 128GB) SSD. One could put OSX on the SSD and have all the pro's of the SSD (instant boot times, etc...), while still being able to use the 72k HDD at the same time...

I've got a Refurbished 2009 27' model. Looking for a snazzy external hard drive for time machine.
Since my iMac has Firewire 800, that's the best route. It's also 2 TB's so that's the storage I'm looking for.
How does this look:

As iMac users, our time machines are always exterior so let's post 'em here!
Any drives complement the iMac's simplistic design? Feel free to post you time machine here.
So I have a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard, and I am looking to buy a large external harddrive (1+ TB) to back up my computer with (using Time Machine). Can I do this wirelessly, even though I do not have Airport Extreme or the Apple external harddrive (I will most likely buy a Western Digital or some other big-name brand).
Also, my family PC is running Windows XP. Is a way I can wirelessly back up that computer as well to this external harddrive, or will I need to plug that in to the PC.
Is there an external hard drive that uses a firewire 1.0 connection out there that can be purchased to back up photos and music from an older desktop mac?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an external hard drive, but it seems to be either corrupt or malfunctioning in some other way. When I plug it in it works fine for a while, but soon after I get a "Disk was not properly ejected" error.
If I try to unplug and plug the disk in again, Finder won't recognise it until I've rebooted my computer.
I can't be bothered rebooting all the time, so is there a process I could kill instead that would relaunch itself and start off "fresh"?
finder application stopped finding certain types of files on an external drive. The external drive (WD 80GB) is recognised and I have access to all files, however, when I search for specific files in the finder window it wont find pdf, txt, doc files. It does find picture files such as jpg. I have tried using the drive on my laptop (snow leopard) and macmini (leopard)

Is there any time of performance decrease in reading/writing onto the drive if its formated as NFTS and then use NTFS-3G on my Mac? Compared to HFS+ which is Mac's native partition.
My main issue is wanting this external drive to be compatible between my Mac and Windows machines. Also want to run Time Machine backups on the drive,
I know Fat32 would be another option, but not when it comes to large ISOs and 1080p videos larger than 4GB.
I've followed several tutorials on how to get this done, as it seems so simple but it's not working on my end. I've moved the iTunes folder from the /music/ to an external hard drive. I'm opening iTunes, going to Preferences, Advanced, and replacing the iTunes Media folder location to the correct one /Volumes/Volume E/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media
I'm checking Keep iTunes Media folder organized & Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library, clicking on the "OK" button, and nothing happens.
Funny enough, Spotify finds it in seconds and I can play my music from that player instead.

When I upload a file created in third party apps like Scrivener or Nisus writer on my iMac, I see the file in the finder under iCloud drive in my MacAir, but cannot directly download it. Next to the file name there is a download icon (the same that's used in icloud.com) but clicking on it doesn't do anything. I can't drag the file to my desktop either. I have to go in my browser to icloud.com and download it from there.
I thought I can upload and download files just like in Dropbox or Sugarsync, I use both, without having to go the the icloud.com website.
I am using the latest version of Yosemite on both machines.

I'm looking to clone my 250gb HD over to a 1TB Western Digital 2.5 HD. I need to get an external USB harddrive enclosure, but most that I've seen say it has a 500GB capacity. Does anyone know of any cheap external enclosures that can get the job done? If so, can you provide a link?

I need some suggestions on which drives are the best....speed and durability are a MUST have. I'm looking to get a 1TB perhaps a 1.5TB or 2TB...IF its not too pricey...I'll be getting them from [URL] so $$ shouldnt be that bad of an issue.... definitely 7200RPM...I unfortunately do not have firewire ports on my 13"MB so I'm stuck with USB 2.0 connections...
I know the WD 1TB is bigger than the stock HDs in MBPs so was wondering if there was an external hard drive enclosure out there that was cheap and can fit either hard drive? Also what is everyone's thoughts regarding the WD Scorpio Blue 1TB? I bought one before but returned it because of strange sounds but my stock drive makes the same sounds so I guess it was a minor issue.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAnyone know of any 3rd party SSD (solid state drives) available that will fit the Air?? I was hoping to get a 32GB SSD for a good price & do the swap myself. I dont need much internal space & use my server for all my big files over 802.11n, so I cant justify paying Apple $1K just for the option of the SSD.

So I just got a brand new White MB. I would like to replace the 120 GB 5400 rpm HD with a larger and perhaps faster 3rd party one. I have never done this before and I was wondering if people could warn me of any potential hazards as I pick out a new hard drive. Specifically:
- What are the physical dimensions of the HD for this computer?
- Can I put a 7200 rpm one in? Will this cause hazardous overheating? Can my computer handle it?
I have seen some great deals on 320 GB and 500 GB 7200 rpm HDs on Newegg. I just want to make sure they will work with my computer. Any specific models people can recommend?
My macBook battery is dying and out of warranty. I need to find a replacement but the Apple battery is really expensive. Is there any reliable 3rd party battery out there? If none of the 3rd party is reliable, I would rather get the expensive OEM.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI know everyone who have macbook pro 5.4(Mid 2009, 2.53Ghz) trying 3rd party hdd(such as Segate and Western Digital Scorpio black) or SSD have a problems like 1. can't install SL or lion 2. occasional freezes every 7-8 seconds and etc. The last solution I saw on the other discussion forum was downgrading the EFI firmware from 1.7 to 1.6. Without downgrading EFI firmware to 1.6,I'm wondering if Hitachi Travelstar 5K750(5400rpm, SATA2) or 5K500.B(5400rpm, SATA2) or 7K500(7200rpm, SATA2) - any of this is going to work on my MBP 5.4. Does anyone with those Hitachi HDDs have a problem?
