IMac :: Blue Screen But Can Hear Skype?
Sep 8, 2009
I have an iMac G5 that is clearly booting up--you can hear the skype connection sound in the background--but I'm stuck w/ a blue screen. Tried P-RAM and other keyboard methods, to no avail. Took off back cover, seems as though only 1 fan is working.
Was able to connect iMac to my laptop via target mode, so it's truly a screen connection problem.

Everytime I start skype while in windows, the computer crashes and I get the blue screen... I think it has to do with the sound drivers, because when I'm using msn messenger also in windows suddenly the microphone mutes itself.
I tryed updating the realtek drivers with no help, updated skype, no help, I uninstalled the realtek drivers and the laptop did not crash anymore but I had no sound, any advice like for example how to get the microsoft drivers to work on the laptop without using realtek??
For whatever reason with the microsoft drivers,I think the sound is trying to come out of the digital outlet, I can see the ligth inside the jack, but nothing comes out of the laptop's speakers...
By the way, the vista version is Home basic.

I am running OSX 10.5.7. Installed it several weeks ago. This morning, the computer was acting up a bit. For instance, in my wife's account, I couldn't access our shared iTunes library, getting the error saying it was locked. When I rebooted, suddenly I couldn't get into the machine. It just hangs on a blue screen. I've tried booting with the shift key down, and that didn't do anything. I also tried cmd-s, but don't know what to do with that at the prompt, and cmd-v, which works fine, but just dumps me into the blue screen again.
I have a bootable FW drive, and I can boot fine off that, and even see the internal drive. I've opened files on the internal drive -- it all looks intact. But I still can't boot from the internal drive. I've tried Googling for solutions, but if you google "hangs on blue screen" or bsod or whatever around OSX, you get a bunch of hits related to installing 10.5.7, which isn't my issue, and you also get articles from 2006 and 2004, etc. I was hoping it was some sort of permissions thing, but I am not really sure.

while i am using my macbook the screen will suddenly go blue and flash between different blue colors like it is trying to work. sometimes it comes back on but most of the time it stays like that. I have to force shut down with the button and then restart...about half the time it is still flashing blue after the restart and if it does work, it goes blue eventually.
dont know if its a problem with the screen or what because the computer continues to work...if there is a movie on, you can here it in the background and the screen just flashes.

I have a fifteen inch 800 MHZ 768 MB ram iMac G4 and for some reason it won't boot up. The apple screen shows up, goes away and then the screen is apple-blue with the cursor you can move around. I left it on overnight and it didn't get past the apple-blue screen. What do I do?

I am a Mac-newbie who recently switched from PC to Mac. I know a little about comps and have some experience with Windows and Linux. Now the Mac. I upgraded my iMac 20" (bought it used from a friend) from Mac OS X 10.4 to Mac OS X 10.5 and everything seemed to go according to plan until it came to the re-boot and the comp froze on the blue screen with the movable mouse pointer showing. I tried the apple key with s on boot and did fsck -fy and fsck -f a couple of times. It only shows "The volume MacC appears to be okay". Everytime I typed "exit" to go to the log-in window it still gets stuck on the blue screen. I tried to start it with the installation disk in the DVD drive but now it doesn't eject it either anymore. So, the situation is: I have an iMac with that wont go past the blue screen, with a workable mouse pointer and a stuck DVD in the drive. I am extremely frustrated especially since I do not have a second Mac to read the HD in the iMAc with and I don't have a backup system (except my PC Laptop). What can I do?

-Got the iMac refurbished in mid-2010 (2009 iMac i5)
-Originally planned on mainly using Windows, so I partitioned the drive to 750gb for Windows and the rest for OSX
I eventually got fed-up with certain things about both Windows and certain limitations/glitches within Bootcamp itself and decided it was time to go OSX, and use the machine properly in all it's Apple glory.
I removed the 750gb of the Windows 7 partition, restoring the whole thing back to OSX. At this point, my computer seemed to be working fine still- OSX would boot up in about a minute or so, nothing that seemed out of the ordinary. After that, I still wanted a small partition with Windows 7; so I partitioned 100gb of my drive and proceeded to install Windows 7. During the Windows 7 installation, as had happened the first time I installed Windows 7 with Boot Camp, I got the "Black Screen" issue. If you are unfamiliar with the issue, see here:.......................

My imac will not boot past the blue screen. It crashed whilst loading a new application which I downloaded from the mac website, had to force a shutdown as it wasn't responding, and now it will not boot no matter what I try. I have searched for answers on the forums but my mac will not respond to any keyboard commands even with the installation dvd inserted. I don't get the startup chime anymore either.

My iMac (which was bought in september of 2006) fell around 2 months ago and cracked on the left side of the screen. It wasn't such a big problem until blue vertical lines began forming around the crack and now spreading. Now I don't know what to do, would it be cheaper to get it fixed at an Apple store or can I replace the screen, and if so where would I be able to buy an LCD 15" screen?

Tried everything from archive and install (wouldn't read disk2 until the 9th try and ended up with 9 system folders). Then tried an Erase and Install. Still it refuses to boot. Get's hung up at the blue screen. Will only boot in safe mode. Now for the last few days even the startup chime is missing. Tried PRAM and NVRAM resets. no help. Won't boot from DiskWarrior boot disk either. Just hangs

I bought a Guardian MAXimus hard drive and it seemed to be working fine for the past few weeks. Now all of sudden when starting my Imac 27 I7 the grey screen takes a long time then it get stuck on the blue screen and stays like that. Some times after being on the blue screen it will goto the main page but it takes 3-5 min if it does. When it gets stuck, if I unplug the firewire from the back of the computer from the hard drive it boots up. Any thoughts, their tech support wants me to send the unit back with out doing any testing at home to see what the problem is, seems like a pain in the butt.

When I turned my iMac on this morning (iMac G5 PPC 10.5.8) it went through all of the "normal" steps (gong, grey screen, apple logo, progress wheel, blue screen) and stopped at the blue screen. Thinking it was just a fluke, I shut the machine down and restarted, only to have it stop at the blue screen again. After disconnecting everything going into the iMac except the keyboard and mouse, I attempted to boot into safe mode but it stopped at the blue screen again.
Next, I flashed the PRAM (big gong, single quieter gong) and afterward it came to the blue screen. I reattached my external drive and selected to boot from a 2-day old backup. Using the backup I was able to log into both my regular account and my "test" account (without login items). I still cannot login (except to my external drive backup).

It's my understanding that the start up chime you get when you start up on any Mac,c an NOT be changed because that sound is in the firmware. Cool.
That being said, is there anyway to add/hear your own custom sound clip AFTER that?
Does any one know how to do it?

Over the last few months there have begun to be hundreds of blue horizontal lines running across the screen and the sound fragmented, with the Mac crashing over 5 times a day. Normally, I would restart and the problem would be OK for a while.
However, now when I turn on hundreds of horizontal black/green lines appear in colums, the normal apple symbol comes up with the spinning loading item. Then a blue screen will appear and the normal log on profile selector doesn't appear. Then after a while the blue screen is covered the thousands of these black/green lines.

I used a new USB flash drive this morning to transfer my pictures to. It showed it was transferring them then the screen went blue and nothing responded. I shut down the computer and unplugged everything but now when I turn the computer back on it shows my home screen and I can see the mouse icon moving around but I am unable to 'click" on any of my programs and get a response.

I'm doing my best not to panic here but I'm sure you can feel my pain. I got up this morning, made my coffee and opened up my MBP to start my day.
I can hear that start up sound but the screen is completely black. Nothing. It was fine yesterday and I didn't do anything different when I closed it to put it in sleep mode. But now it won't wake up. I pulled the battery, let it cool (seemed a little warm since I just started it)....still black screen.
Can anyone provide any advice on how to fix?

i have had my imac little under a week i been looking for any faults so can change soon as. I have 1 dead pixel, not yellow tinting, no buzz or hum noise but not sure about the hard drive it could be just me.
So how quiet should a imac be? i hear the hard drive working wen sometimes going through sites or doing program stuff nothing extremely loud though just quietish sounds that last few sec which different from the standard leave alone computer noise, which i think is normal with any computer but since i found at thread on hard drive noises i not sure now.
so question is really how quiet should a iMac be? i guess you should be able to hear it running but wen you are doing stuff should you hear the hard drive at all? just bit paranoid at moment since first mac.
