Mac Pro :: Upgrade 2009 Mac Pro 3.33GHz To 2010 6 Core 3.33GHz?
Jul 28, 2010
I read that the new 6 core Mac Pro's use 32nm technology.
I guess this means a different mobo to the one in the 2009 4 core models?
Apple are offering an upgrade from 4 core to 6 core on the new models, so I'm wondering if I could do the same to my 2009 model or would it not be as simple to swap out the mobo as I think?

I'm one of the many many people who are juggling mac pro options in my head.
is the 3.33GHz Westmere worth the extra 640? Probably not, but now much faster will be it? 20%....30%?
I think I'm set on either of these two options, mainly using FCP and photoshop and a bit of motion. maybe a bit of gaming
Also I can max out them four RAM slots and get a 5870 with the extra cash.

According to my iStat pro, my core temperature is running at almost 100c when my computer is doing a tough task (rendering video for example), despite my fans doing 6000rpm. Is this ok?! I'd thought about perhaps cleaning the fans on my laptop (macbook pro, core 2 duo 2.33ghz, not unibody), is this a possible solution?

They're both Intel Xeon Westmere's, but I was planning on buying the 8-core today. However, another commentator mentioned the 3.33GHz 6-core Westmere being a faster/better choice than the 2.4GHz 8-Core Westmere. Is this due to the 1 6-Core processor versus 2 Quad-Core processors and how the system utilizes threading, etc of each?

I'm running photoshop 7.0, Illustrator 10, In Design 2.0.1, Microsoft Office is old. I'm running into problems like my itunes not working, adobe flash videos not working, some website suggesting I update my browsers. I have 768MB Ram and can upgrade to 1GB if you think this will work? I just want to make this work for another year or so until I can save some money in our company and upgrade to a new computer.
Info:MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Under Tech specs for new 2009 Mac Pro:
"Turbo Boost dynamic performance (up to 3.33GHz on 8-core 2.93GHz system)"
As this is a feature of the chip I'm assuming this is true for the new Quad core as well. Is it? How can I find out? Any online reviews/overviews/etc. that looks at the new chips?

Does anyone have any experience with putting new hard drives in a 1.33ghz iBook 12" and in a 12" PB 1.5ghz -- that both have the sensor motion thing on the hard drives?
Is this motion sensor a physical part on the hard drive or something within the connection itself?
I also want to put a superdrive in the iBook 1.33ghz.
If anyone has any tips or advice, would be welcomed... as I believe the iFixit site's photos are for earlier revision machines.

I have been searching a lot and doing some reading to find out what to do to get better system performance. I bought my MacBook pro mid 2007 the configuration are 2.33GHZ, 2GB Ram. My system can only go up to 3GB Ram and has two slots to fill the ram. Currently, I have 1GB in each of them. Now the questions is
1. Should I put 1GB in one and 2GB in the other to make it 3GB total?
2. Should I put 2GB in each to make it 4GB total?
I found out that matching pairs are good and if I put 4GB it will only use 3.2GB and the rest will be just unusable. If I put 3GB then it will not match but still gives you performance.
I have read goods and bads for both and now highly confused what to do? I want to request my Mac users to please give me some suggestions, hints and better reasons to apply.
I bought my system for $2700.00 when it first came out. Now do not think it is smart to sell it for $1200.00 (If I am lucky) and spend extra $600.00 to get 2.8GHz.
I can afford both rams as they are really cheap now. I use my mac for surfing, movies both online and offline, some time PS and Aperture, I do tends to have about 10 different apps open at the same time, for example ( Skype, Safari, PS, MSN, Yahoo, Ichat, ITunes, etc). I am also thinking about playing some games on my Mac such as Call of Duty, Fall out 3 and stuff.

Are there any problems I should anticipate in swapping out the original combo drive in a 1.33ghz iBook for a superdrive? Any software issues?
Anything I need to know about making it work other than making sure it is physically in the right position?

My main lappy is a last revision 1.33GHz 12" iBook G4 with GB of RAM. In the past month or so, it has gotten slower and slower. Everything lags, and today when I entered an address into Camino, it took it a full 90 seconds to realize I had pressed enter, and get rid of the drop-down autocomplete.
I recently upgraded to Leopard. I thought this would help, but apparently not. Sadly. I just purchased a T41 ThoughtlessPad because i needed a FUNCTIONAL laptop.

I will be getting a MacPro 3.33GHz soon, and need to find the right Smart UPS system that will allow the MacPro to automatically save and shut down.
I've been searching through the specs on many Smart UPS systems and have found very few that list Mac OSX on the system requirements.

I've previously owned a 12" iBook G4 1.07GHz, and had a resolution of 1024 X 768 on my 17" DELL P780 display. Now I have a 1.33GHz G4 iBook. Same size. Wouldn't go past 800 X 600, I tried restarting, Display Preferences, EVERYTHING.

I'm currently using a MBP 2.33Ghz with 3gb of ram. What I want to know is how much faster are the latest machines, I find Aperture slow to load images and Photoshop can be slow to apply filters at times.I'll be waiting for the announcement but how does my machine compare to the current fastest MBP's?

So my question is -- do you know if this would be an issue swapping drives from a 2009 Mac Pro to a 2010 running 10.6.5 on the drive? Is there an OS performance hit running the 10.6.5 from the 2009's drive on the 2010 Mac Pro?
The reason I ask is because I am upgrading to a 3.33GHz 6-core, it's ordered and on the way. When it comes, I would just like to swap my SSD from my 2009 to the 2010 (running 10.6.5) and hope that everything runs OK. I don't want to have to re-install the new OS X build from the system disks and then update it, I would like it just to work correctly on the new Mac Pro.

I'm running Leopard on my iBook G4, 1.33GHz. I am using it with an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor, but the "clamshell mode" is not supported on iBook G4s. I've tried Sleepless and InsomniaX, but they both don't work.

Can anyone confirm the real-life differences in speed between a PC2700 1GB chip and a PC2100 IGB chip in a PowerBook G4 1.33Ghz which normally takes the PC2700? I know the slower chip is compatible so I'm just wondering about the difference in performance. I can get it at half the price of the normal, slightly faster chip.

I have last year's MacBook Pro, that has 13" screen, 2.53 ghz, 4 gb ram, with the 9400 video. I'm wondering if there's compelling enough reason to upgrade it to the newly released 2010 model 13" 2.66 ghz, 4 gb ram, with the 310m video that would get 10 hours of battery rather than my present 7. The other thing I'm considering is when I bought mine I opted for the 5400 rpm hard drive, because I didn't want to lose an hour of my battery. If I do the above upgrade, I'd be apt to also go to 7200 rpm drive, as I think i'd see a noticeable performance boost, and still see a battery increase over my previous model.

Just curious as to how much of an improvement in performance I would see upgrading my system as it states above, since my 2006 machine is 3 years old and getting close to the end of my apple care, figured I would trade it in and upgrade.

I have been offered a 2008 3.2GHz 8 Core with 10GB RAM, ATI 4870, 320HD, no warranty/applecare left.
Or, I can buy a new 2009 2.93GHz 4 Core, 3GB RAM, 640HD, GT120
Both about the same price: $2850.00 USD
Which would you choose, and why?

I have an opportunity to get a Late 2009 27" i7 (2.8 Ghz) for $1699. I've been looking at the $1999 i5 (also 2.8 Ghz). I know it has a 1Gb Video Card, compared to the 512 MB one on the 2009 i7.
My basic question is, is the i7 worth the lesser video card and cheaper price, compared to the i5 with a stronger video card?
I do a lot of work in Photoshop and iMovie, as well as Illustrator and inDesign. I also will be playing TF2 heavily, and heard that the i7 was great for video and gaming. I'm in the market for an iMac since my Late 2006 Macbook Pro is on the verge of death.

I'm just going to order a new Mac Pro and noticed that it was slightly cheaper to order the base dual processor model and buy the 2.93GHz hex cores myself. A couple of questions arise:
Will my AppleCare still be valid or will I have to keep the 2.4GHz Xeons if I need to return it to Apple for any reason?
Is there market for the 2.4GHz processors?
Can I upgrade to the 3.33GHz processors or will this not work?

I'm thinking about buying a new workstation for Maya 2011. I'm looking at either a 2010 Mac Pro 6-core 3.33GHz/ATI Radeon 5870, or a 2010 Mac Pro 12-core 2.93GHz/ATI Radeon 5870. I've been told by Autodesk tech support that although Maya will see all the cores, that its not guaranteed that it will use them, and use them efficiently for rendering. They said that Maya 2011 isn't optimized for processors more than 4-cores.
I just started using Maya last year on OS X, and I find it absurd how slow Autodesk qualifies new hardware and operating systems, not allowing professionals to take advantage of the latest technology that can save a ton of precious rendering time. Has anyone pulled the trigger and purchased a new 2010 Mac Pro for use with Maya 2009-2011? If so, which Mac Pro, and what configuration did you get and Why? What version of Maya are you running? Are you having any problems running Maya, bugs?..................

Before everyone says "IT DOESNT HAVE B1 STEPPING!!!" hear me out.The new 2010 Mac Pro's that were just released have options for both the 4-8 core and 6-12 core option. This coupled with the fact that nothing has changed other than graphics cards etc. makes me think if someone could extract the EFI code, they could just drop it into an 09 and it would include B1 stepping, so people like me could just drop in a 3.33 Westmere and call it a day.Again, I have no idea about anything EFI, it just seems like much more a possbility now that both the 4-8 core and 6-12 core versions are running on basically the same machine.
