IMac :: 2008 Model Not Booting Properly

Jan 26, 2009

First, I have a mid-2008 Aluminum iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 Ghz, 2GB Ram, running OS X 10.5.6. So two days ago, it started hanging on me. Prior to this I have never had any problems with it. I had mail open, a browser window and a chat window. Started getting the spinning beach ball of death. It finally totally locked up on me and I have to force it to shut down.

However, upon reboot, it would not get past the white screen with the apple logo and the spinning gray gear icon. I'm talking like 10-15 minutes. I forced it to shut down (probably not a good idea) and this time on reboot I got the folder icon with the question mark as if firmware could not locate the booter file. I loaded the install DVD that came with the mac and ran Disk Utilities.................

OS X V10.4 :: Beep Tone On Startup; Main Disc Not Showing In Utilities?

Apr 14, 2012

After having repairing my hard disc with Utilities (having started up from my Install Disc holding C key) and being okay for a day, the thing seemed to crash again. Came home and the machine was off, not just asleep.  Tried to start up, heard a single long beep tone, then the regular start-up chord, but it just hung.  Then started up off the Install Disc holding D key, did the Appple Hardware Test, Extended, and that just stalled after a while - as it did each time before - and also the Mac was making a not-good-sounding whirring, hum noise. Started again off the Install Disc, this time holding C key, went to Utilities to try a Repair again, but this time the hard disk was not even showing in the Disk Utility!

Software :: Macbook Pro (2008) Not Booting At All?

Apr 16, 2010

I have a Macbook Pro from around 2007/2008 that is running Tiger 10.4.11. I haven't had too many issues, one harddrive change and one reinstall, but nothing severe.

But right now, my laptop will not boot up at all. It has been running a bit sluggishly, I admit, but not enough to have caused alarm. Then just yesterday and this morning it was running at a snail's pace and I couldn't do anything without it freezing or running slowly. I turned it off, left it and when I came back, it would not boot. All I get is the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel. I left it for an hour, hoping it was just running sluggishly, but it never booted up.

I tried booting in safemode, verbose mode and single-user mode. All of them failed. In fact, when I try to boot in safe mode by holding down the shift key, my computer just shuts off after about a minute of grey screen/logo.

I keep hearing people say I should run the DiskUtility from the install disk, but if I can't boot up I can't put in the disk to actually repair it. Is this a harddrive or RAM issue? I haven't upgraded the RAM since I got the laptop, maybe it needs to be changed out?

I'm sorry, I don't know a lot about the inner-workings of computers

-Both on Cable Select
-Top drive on Master and then bottom drive on Slave.

It happens every time the mac starts up. My computer stats should be below.

OS X :: MacBook Pro Not Booting - Startup Sound Is Looping?

Jan 10, 2010

I am having an odd pproblem with a MacBook Pro. When I boot, 95% of the time, the Apple sound will loop continuously and the Notebook will not boot. In every 10 tries, I will have a chance to get the machine to boot up into the OS, and after a little while the Display will start to flash randomly and the machine will freeze. only a force shutdown seems to bring you out the freeze, but then you can't always get back into the OS because of the looping Apple Startup sound. It gets stuck at the exact same moment, right after the apple sound is finished, but loops.. So What I'm trying to say is that it doesn't get stuck at random moments, only just as the apple sound is finished playing, then it plays over, and over and over

Windows On Mac :: How To Set A Dual Booting Option At Startup

Jan 12, 2011

I believe the Macs at my college allow the user to select from either Mac OSX or Windows at startup. However, it's a little different than holding down the option key at startup. I think it shows both at startup by default and if none is chosen, Mac will boot automatically within a couple of seconds.

PowerPC :: Tried Booting IBook With MBP Startup Disks - Kernel Panic

Sep 8, 2007

I'm relatively new to Macs and I wanted to try a clean install (or erase and install) on my ibook. I recently purchased a MBP and since Leopard is on the horizon, I wanted to do a "trial run" of installing an updated operating system. I know that you can just hit update instead of doing a clean install, but I've been reading that things run better when you do a fresh install. My old ibook still has Panther on it and I figured I could try to install Tiger on it from my MBP disks.

I know that this represents a violation of the license, but I thought it would be worth it to ensure that I don't make any major mistakes when I'm doing the same procedure with my brand new MBP when Leopard gets released. When I tried booting from the disk from my ibook I got a kernel panic which I interpreted as a sign that it was not a good idea so I abandoned the project. Now every time I try to start my ibook I get another kernel panic and I'm afraid I just broke my old computer.

MacBook Pro :: Early 2008 - Very Slow Startup, Very Hot?

Jun 25, 2012

A few months back, my old reliable MacBook Pro (early 2008) started behaving oddly. Have no idea why, but went to start it up one day, and it took forever to start up and get me to the login screen. Been like that ever since. Occassionally, when I finally get to the login screen, the keyboard will not function. After a few minutes though, it always works. This only happens about 5% of the time. Once I log in, everything about the computer from a performance perspective seems to be pretty normal In addition to the slow start up, however, system gets extremely hot at the top of the keyboard, near the monitor. Fans run fast almost all the time when the system is powered on, and often when it is 'asleep'. CPU Temp goes to about 170, and the fans are always between 2400 and 3500.

I took it to Apple a while back, and based on the incredibly slow start up time they believed it was a disk issue. I went ahead and purchased a 500GB internal drive and this past weekend used SuperDuper to copy the original boot disk. All went well and I now have a new internal disk. At the same time, I upgrade the RAM from 2GB to 4GB.

After all that, the system is still very slow at startup and runs as hot as it did before. I will say, it does seem to be slightly faster on the startup, but not what I had become accustomed to for the first 4 years of use. I looked at the activity monitor and don't see any processes hogging resources. No anti-virus software running.Currently running Mac OSX 10.6.8 My battery is pretty muc shot, but I never really use the system unplugged.

MacBook Pro :: No Startup Chime On Late 2008/OS Sound Is Working Fine?

Jul 3, 2009

Here's a bit of a strange one, noticed over the last couple of days that the start up chime was getting quieter, then today no sound what so ever when turning it on.

Now from my understanding of it, the chime is a bit like a POST beep on a PC? Hear it once and every thing's fine? Otherwise the MBP is booting up fine, dual booting it and have sound in OS X and Win 7?!

Suspect I may have a HDD issue, as had to run chkdsk /f /r the other day and had to stop it after 12 hours as it was still on stage 4 of 5 @ 18%, and it seems to be running slower, also the HDD is becoming more vocal.

I'm going to run a full AHT on the unit, was just wondering if anyone else has come across something like this before?

IMac :: Imac 27" Brief Mechanical Ejection Sound From Dvd Drive When Booting Up

Dec 2, 2009

Had a quick question. I'm on my third 27" stock 3.06Ghz imac that was replaced yesterday. The good news is that so far it doesn't seem to have any of the problems of my previous two 27" imac's. There is one thing though. A couple of seconds after pressing the power button to bootup there is a brief mechanical sound from the dvd drive like a quick ejecting sound even though there is no cd in the drive. My first 27" imac dvd drive made the sound but the second imac 27" Imac I had didn't. Is this sound normal? Would be curious to know why two out of the three 27" Imac's I had make that noise.

Why is the tone diminishing to non at all. I have not changed my volume settings. Is this a problem? Or am I just paranoid after 4 years of reliability?

OS X :: Random Two-Tone Beep At Start Up?

Dec 3, 2008

My Macbook is awesome, absolutely no complaints except for this loud "Ding-dong" noise that comes at really random times. It's sort of fuzzy, like a recording on a cell phone (which I'm sure it's not), and it's just a higher pitched beep then a slightly lower pitched beep.

I've searched everywhere and I haven't found any posts or anything at all like this. I can have no applications open, other than background processes (I'll list those below) and it'll make the noise. So I sort of assume it's either some ridiculous Leopard malfunction or that it's one of the Preference Panes I have installed. If anyone has this same problem let me know, I'm going to start recording exactly what's open whenever it makes the noise and try to find something in common between them.

OS X :: G5 IMac Not Booting At All Running 10.4.11

Dec 24, 2009

Have a G5 iMac (non Intel) that was running OS 10.4.11 that now won't boot. I get the chime and the Apple then blue screen where it hangs. It won't even boot from an install CD/DVD (same routine) to blue screen. I had wanted to do an archive and reinstall but couldn't get the disk to boot. I have been able to Safe Boot and view files. In Safe Boot, I've verified the hard drive (no problems detected) and Repaired Privileges, but still won't boot (blue Screen). I've tried an install disk with same result (no boot and blue screen).

I've hooked the G5 to another G5 iMac, booted the bad G5 in Target Mode. The hard drive appears on the second G5s desktop. Using CCC have cloned the hard drive to an external hard drive (now have a backup of I don't know what. During the cloning, Norton AntiVirus detected and Quarantined a virus. I've run DiskUtility from the second iMac and again found no problems with the hard drive or permissions. Should I erase the bad hard drive, reinstall system software (using an interim user). The try to migrate all the old applications and files from the clone? If not what should I do next?

OS X :: Imac Indigo Not Booting?

a neighboor in my buiding has found in the streets an imac indigo that isn't functionning and asked me to help him. Being skillfull on pc, despite I own an apple II, eons ago, I don't know anything about mac computers nowadays.

Searching the web, I found this might be an imac G3 with cd tray loading. When powered on, a folder with a question mark shows off.. I read that this might indicate a disk failure.

I tried powering it on with the C key down, it showed me a screen with 2 buttons: an cycling like arrow and an arrow to the right. Inserting the disk1 of panther gives me a icon in the middle of the 2 previous one with a mac osx Disc1 label. Clicking on the arrow to the right, the watch pointer revolves a bit and nothing more.
