IMac :: 17" IMac Startup Problems.?

Oct 29, 2010

I have a 17" G5 (early model). recently the computer is having starting problems. Often I just get a black screen and the fan speeds up. Sometimes the computer actually runs ok for short while, then freezes. Reboot results in blank screen. The computer also does not accept a boot disk in the slot drive most times.

I have swapped the internal drive and also swapped out the ram sticks, so the problem isn't there.

I have tried booting from an external drive, I have reset the pram and any other system reset I can think of. I have also tried a different keyboard. Whatever I do the computer usually doesn't work, although occasionally it runs for a while.

Computer spec: 17" iMac G5. 1.6ghz. OSX 10.4 256 mb ram.

OS X :: Imac G5 Startup / Shutdown

Dec 3, 2009

It's been having trouble shutting down when it's gone unused. Then it won't turn on unless I turn the surge protector off and back on. (I thought it was tied to my backup drive being on, but now I just turn it on when I need it) Even then it doesn't start up automatically, I have to push it a few times. Just now when I held down the start up button it made a loud whooshing sound, started up, maintained the sound for awhile and then normal but I still hear it running louder than usual. I dread it may not start up again one of these times. Side issue, maybe unrelated but firefox is driving me crazy with proxy issues, aol mail issues, and just now I couldn't post in this forum it was "forbidden" when I hit submit. so I used Safari instead and found my post was actually posted.

Apr 16, 2012

I have a 2003 17" flatpanel imac (1 GHz)I've been using it for the specific purpose of running some old OS9 software. It's the only way I have to get to some old files. It's been working fine. Then, after a shut down, I cannot get it to restart.Push the power button. Nothing. No sound. Nothing.I've uplugged it for 30 seconds and replugged and tried to restart.Nothing.Is there any other type of power management restart I can try?I have several other newer macs, all running 10.6 or 10.7, which I use for 90% of my work. But this one machine is my only link to these old (OS 9) files which I still need to access.

IMac :: Clicking Noise In HDD On Startup?

Feb 22, 2009

I have (had) a 24" iMac, which I purchased on Christmas Eve this past year. I love it, but it had a tendency to make all sorts of nasty noises. This was mostly a clicking that the HDD made for about 5 minutes on startup. I ended up backing up my iMac and the shop where I bought it exchanged it for a new one without question, so it's no longer an issue for me. But I've read that a clicking HDD is not uncommon on the Mac and I was wondering if anyone can tell me if it's really that serious an issue? The store employees where I bought it all said that it was an impending HDD failure, although I've heard that isn't always the case. Any thoughts on this?

OS X :: Beachball At Startup / Wakeup On G5 IMac

Apr 6, 2009

When I start or wake up my imac g5 (Tiger) and open safari the system seems to hang for about a minute or so (beachball when curson is on desktop, but app names show when cursor is over the dock). Does not happen when I start other applications first, but even these stop when I start safari immediately after. System runs normally once safari is running. Permissions repair and other usual maintenance task performed (I use onyx), but problem persists.

PowerPC :: IMac G5 Hangs On Startup

Aug 22, 2009

I've got a 1st generation iMac G5 (I think, from 2004) running 10.4.x that has become 'the family' computer since I upgraded this past winter. I haven't been keeping up with updates and decided about 3 weeks ago to finally go through and update everything; had been at least 4 mo.s since the last update and udates included Java Script, iTunes and a Security Update. I started downloading the updates then quit Safari (which had previously been running) walked away to do other things around the house (since it would take a while) and when I came back I had an error message that the logout (to restart - which was required for the Security Update) had timed out because Safari would/could not quit. I clicked OK, force quit Safari and shut down the computer (since no one was going to be using it for the rest of the day and a restart was required anyway).

Came back the next day to startup the computer and it just hung at the blue screen with the mouse arrow. Assuming there was something wrong with the update that was just installed OR the startup disk I reset the PRAM/NVRAM: no change. Tried starting in safe mode: wouldn't (and still won't) move past the blue screen with spinning gear. Tried to boot from install disc to repair the HDD with Disk Utility: Couldn't repair the disk volume (Invalid leaf record count: should be 13 was 1203). Tried single user fsck: scanned twice and reported volume repaired, went to restart - still hangs, tried to boot in safe mode again - still hangs at blue screen with spinning gear. And that's where I'm at now. Anyone got any good other ideas out there? I've searched a lot and haven't found anything I haven't tried. I'm guessing the installed update(s) never completely installed and screwed something up on the startup disk. But I can't access ANYTHING to figure out if that was the problem. I would really like to keep this computer for the kids but don't want to spend any money on it if I can avoid it.

OS X :: Clicking Noise On Startup Of IMac?

Aug 14, 2010

Got an original Intel Core Duo iMac. Last few days I've had trouble starting up the computer. When I hit the power button, I hear a weird clicking noise for a few seconds, then it sounds like the HD is powering down and then powering back up and the clicking noise again. If this goes on for ~30 seconds, a flashing folder with a ? shows up where the Apple logo should be. If that happens, I've powered it down and tried turning it on again. Seems to work, but this has me freaked out.

Does this sound like the HD is dying? Also recently, my Superdrive is spitting back every blank DVD I put in there.

IMac PPC :: G4 PPC Black Screen On Startup?

Mar 19, 2012

I have been limping along for quite some time with a recurring problem with my PPC Flat Panel iMac G4.Sometimes when starting up I would get a black screen. The unit chimes at startup but the screen would stay black.I found that I was able to fix (temporary) the problem by removing the bottom plate and pushing the reset button under the base.(After shutting down and unplugging the unit.) after the startup chime, the screen turned gray with a folder icon in the center with a blinking question mark. After shutting down and restarting, this happened again 3 times. On the 4th shutdown/startup it went back to the black screen.Repeated shutdown/restarts have no effect.Shutting down, unplugging the unit and pushing the reset button is also having no effect.I hear the startup chime every time. Black screen every time as well now.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Managed to change sleep mode to 15mins - same problem. Can't boot from Disk as same problem, also command+option and shift all still have mouse unmoved! Obvious change of keyboard and mouse have no effect. Could this be related to offspring's addition of ipad plugged into usb a few weeks back? He tends to unplug the device without ejecting!

IMac :: Pixelated Screen Display At Startup

Oct 30, 2010

I own an early 2008 iMac running Snow Leopard. A few months ago, it started getting a little buggy and running slow, you know, things you would expect from a computer that's now 2 years old. But then it started freezing and giving me "kernel panics". Of course, the first thing I did was install VirusBarrier and remove any and all viruses it could find, and I repaired the disk and disk permissions and ran all the diagnostic tests from the install DVD. Then I left it unplugged for a day, upgraded the memory from 2 GB to 4 GB and did everything a second time. After all that, everything seemed to work just fine.

Now it seems to be starting all over again! This time the virus scan only picked up a few Windows viruses on an old external hard drive and repairing the disk, disk permissions, and running diagnostics turned up nothing. I've done everything I know to do, short of taking the thing back to Apple! Right now, the main issue is this bug at startup that's really just freaking me out. Linked is a video of what happens. The apps that run at startup are BumpTop, HughesNet Status Meter (as of last month), and Brother Printer Utility. [URL]

IMac :: Replaced HD But System Freezes On Startup

Nov 10, 2009

I have a early 09 iMac 2.93Ghz with 6GB of ram. About a month ago it kept freezing at the grey startup screen. I took it to Apple and two trips to Apple later my hard drive was replaced. One month later here I am and the problem is happening again, the same exact problem. I turn on the iMac it goes to the grey screen, the beach ball "like" thing starts spinning and then it freezes in the middle of it and I have to do a hard power off(hold down the power button). Any ideas!? I already scheduled a appointment with Apple tomorrow afternoon but its a royal pain in the a** to keep shuffling my iMac between home and the Apple store. This will be my 4th trip in for the same problem, btw.
