ICloud :: What Are Lion 'Back To My Mac' Ports
May 31, 2012
I have an AT&T Pace 4111N modem/wireless router and need to open up ports for BtmM. I believe they are UDP 4500, UDP 5353 and TCP 5354 but BtmM is still not working with these ports open.

i am looking for a specific Macbook pro verticale stand. The computer sits in it vertically, lengthways (sideways) and with the ports down that plug into the stand. There are ports on the back of the stand that you can use to plug the comp into an external monitor and usb and whatnot.I saw it on here a while ago but cannot remember where to find it

I was working on a problem with apple support and may have caused thi new problem. My iCloud account suddenly disappeared and was replaced by secondary email address I never used before. All my iCloud mail is gone. I tried to correct by going to accounts and tried to change the email address but it woul not do it because I am unable to edit the incoming mail criteria. I still have the iCloud connection on my iPad and iPhone but not on my Mac lion. I am sending this message from the iPad..

Last month, I upgraded to the new 21.5 inch IMac from an older IMac and I really have loved the cpu/gpu improvements. However, I have never liked the bluetooth keyboard - namely, the lack of easily accessible usb ports. Not having those two usb ports on the keyboard is equivalent to the old-style pc towers that had the usb ports only in the back. It just doesn't make sense. With the bluetooth keyboard, I found myself always reaching around to the back of the imac body. So I went back to the wired keyboard.

I have a 2006 Mac Pro and recently my firewire ports stopped working (front and back). I did a little searching around found a suggestion to try resetting the Mac's PRAM and NVRAM by holding the Cmd-Option-P-R keys down while booting. I have tried this numerous times and it doesn't seem to do anything (i.e. the Mac just loads OS X and doesn't re-boot like the instructions say). I'm using a MS Wireless Comfort Keyboard for Mac. Can you reset using a wireless keyboard?
Since I wasn't making any progress with that, I was toying with bringing in the Mac to a genius bar. Never having used the genius bar before - how does it work? Do I bring the computer in and leave it with them? Do they work on it while I'm there? I don't have an extended warranty so do they charge time and materials? I'm wondering if that might get awfully expensive and if I ought to just buy a PCI-X firewire card instead.

I have a Macbook Pro 15" Intel Core i7 Mid 2010 model, I had upgraded from the App Store to OS X Lion and was running ok, but at the time had half the disk partitioned into Windows, so got to the stage that I didn't want Windows so wiped it, and backed up the OSX Partition as I figured why not have a nice fresh OSX Lion install. Since I've re-installed OSX Lion I now have no connectivity through the 2 USB Ports, or the SD Card as far as I can tell.
Since I'm a month out of the warranty I don't exist to Apple Support any more, so I've been trying everything I can think of or I can find. I've tried the PRAM and SMC resets which obviously don't work, I've tried the old 3+2 key trick. I have re-installed Lion 3 times, same deal. I've resorted to sticking a small Windows partition on at the moment to make sure it's not hardware issue, not sure what else I've tried? Took it apart, removed the battery for an hour or so, even tried booting with no battery - nothing.

I've got a lion 10.7.3 server and several Lion client boxes all attached via ethernet to an airport extreme.Â
I've got a bona fide certificate that seems to have installed correctly, and the client is talking to the open directory serverÂ
Without fail, I get a message "unable to log in the user at this time" on each of the clients...Â
UNLESS I open up all ports on my airport extreme to the server. Â
I've tried opening individual ports for AFP, profile manager (1640, 2195), open ldap (389, 636) and even kerberos (88). Even with all of these open, it still doesn't work. I have to open up everything to get the error to go away - then the users can log in just fine.Â
Note, I'm logging in from the local network to a server on the local network, so this just seems bizarre. Â
I don't have the logs on this computer, but I recall that the error was occurring when it tried to mount the home directory, after authentication. It was an error 64 from homedirmounter (if memory serves).Â

I have the new MacBook Pro 13 (2012) running OSX Lion. I also have the iCloud feature. I have done the setup and put in the necessary information. However, when I go to the iCloud website expecting to see my contacts, email, and other items updated, there's nothing there. I've had my MBP for about 3 months now and I haven't seen a way or figured out how to upload my data to the cloud for safekeeping.Â

I have run into a situation with my iCal calendars and iCloud. It's a long story, but basically I ended up deleting one of my calendars off of iCloud (and subsequently off of all of my other devices). I had made a backup of my ~/Library/Calendars folder as well as the com.apple.ical.plist before I was modifying it, and tried to restore the calendar from the Calendar folder. I now have a situation whereby my calendars appear correctly in iCal, but iCloud is not picking up the deleted calendar (the others are still syncing fine). I was looking at trying to unsync/resync, however, iCloud threatens to delete all of my calendar data off the machine but leave it in iCloud, which is not helpful to what I am trying to accomplish. System has latest updates to 10.7.3.
How can I get this particular calendar to sync with iCloud again?

I've made the move to iCloud, and now my laptop (Snow Leopard) can't get my mail. There's an option for continuing to use mail only on older OSs, but I can't find that option since I've already made the move. How do I "back-up" and set the preferences?

I have a lot of pictures on my Mac, and I don't want to include them in photo stream. They are all in the "Pictures" folder, but I have only imported a few of them into iPhoto. WIll all my pictures be included or just those in iPhoto? I think it's just the imported ones but I want to be sure before I set up the storage & backup in iCloud.

I have a Mac mini at home and at work. I have iCloud. When I first logged into my home computer using Back to My Mac, it was kind of a shocker to have complete access to everything. That's not what I want. I just want access to one folder (which I called Inbox) into which I can drop documents so that I don't have to take a USB drive home with me. My document needs are just one way sending documents home (I'll file them appropriately when I get home). The added benefit is that if anyone cracks my iCloud password they can access only that one folder. Is there a way to limit access to just one folder? I tried adding my Inbox folder in Sharing in System Preferences but all that does is list that folder along with the volumes when I log into Back to My Mac from work.

I have got for the communitiy regarding iCloud storage please. Are we, of if not, will we ever be at the stage where we can use iCloud as off-site storage for not just e-mail but documents saved in Word, Excel and Powerpoint for Apple and Photos stored in iPhoto.I ask as my Time Capsule recently packed up and was wondering with the advance of Cloud computing could iCloud replace my old storage / back-up.

Back to My Mac worked in Snow Leopard, now when I check back to My Mac in Icloud settings I get the errort message "server not responding" and it tells me to switch it off and wait 15 seconds before turning it on again.
Apple support pages have no more suggestion than this. The rest of Icloud works fine, just Back to My Mac that is gone

I now have no calendar on my ipad and only one child's calender (out of three childrens +2 other calendars) shows up on my macbook and entries are changed to wrong days. I have everything on my iphone but do not want to plug it in for fear of losing all data (I do have a back up on an external HD) How do I get all the correct data from my iphone calendar to the ipad and macbook? She has 3502 contacts in her Address Book on her OS X Lion 10.7.4 MacBook Air. She has two iPhones. They're both running iOS 5.1.1. She has enabled iCloud on ALL these three devices, using her @me.com identity and appropriate password. She updates Address Book contacts ONLY on her MBA - for sync'ing to her phones - and she does NOT update any Contacts info on her phones in order to have them transferred BACK to her Mac. That's how she prefers to work.Â
The only way that her Address Book contacts will sync UP to iCloud from the Mac appears to be to select 'All on My Mac' within Address Book, and to Export as vcards to a file on her Mac, and then, in the online iCloud Contacts webpage, to Import that file of vcards. All well and good, but that seems to ignore all her various Groups; everything ends up bundled all into one group. (Perhaps each Group in her Mac's Address Book needs to be separately Exported and then Imported, but surely it shouldn't be as long-winded as that.) Â
(About 402 of these contacts are not accepted by the online iCloud Contacts, although they seem to fall within the requirements of not being too many, not being too large, etc. But that's a separate problem which I'm still investigating ..maybe the names are formatted incorrectly; I'll keep working on that separately..)Â
Anyhow: by explicitly Importing all those Address Book contacts into the iCloud Contacts, they then immediately start to get distributed - correctly! - to her iPhones ..but also back into the Address Book on her Mac, thereby DUPLICATING them all in Address Book! (They CAN be seen as SINGLE entries by choosing 'All iCloud'.)Â
I cannot understand the opaque instructions in all of the iCloud documentation. NONE of the documentation which I've studiously read (online, in System Prefs, in every Help file I can find) seems to indicate a DIRECTION for this iCloud sync'ing. WHERE - if there is such a place - does one specify that contacts should go only UP FROM the Mac, and not BACK DOWN to the Mac?Â
There seem to be options only to turn ON sync'ing (or off), but not the DIRECTION of sync'ing, or which device(s) take precedence. (..In iTunes - when sync'ing phones to a Mac with a cable - there's a preference to over-write EITHER the host Mac with data FROM a phone, or to over-write an iPhone's data with data FROM the Mac..)Â
(a) Can one specify a DIRECTION when turning on sync'ing for a device?
(b) With iCloud sync'ing turned ON on a Mac, is there any known reason why Address Book contacts should not send themselves UP to the iCould, instead of having to be manually Imported?
(c) Does one Export Groups individually? ..But what if a name is in more than one Group ..does it get duplicated online in iCloud?
(d) Is there not the intelligence within the iCloud facility for the system to NOT distribute back, or duplicate, contacts to the device which is the SOURCE of those contacts? Should it not do a comparison between iCloud and a device, and then recognise that those contacts already exist on the remote device, and therefore NOT distribute them BACK again to the SOURCE? (..Or am I having too high expectations?..)Â
