ICloud On Mac :: Migrating Files From One IMac To Another Using OS X Mavericks
Jun 24, 2014
I am about to purchase a new iMac. How do I go about migrating my programs and files from my old iMac to my new one using Mavericks. Let the Apple Store do it? Use the Cloud? I am running OS X Version 10.9.3. I found information on the apple.com site about using Mountain Lion and earlier operating systems, but not Mavericks.

Just used migration assistant to switch from an older iMac to a new iMac and now I have two admin accounts under Users & Groups. My name is slightly different on the two admin accounts. When I switch to the other admin account it appears the files are from ~2010. This admin account is greyed out, so I cannot seem to remove it. Is it taking up space? Will it create a problem?

I am moving from a PB 10.4 to a new Imac 10.6. The PB has several years of my Mac life; the Imac just the pristine OS. I have already learned how to transfer files: I got the firewire cable and know the Setup/Migration attendants reasonably well. However, there are several issues confusing me on how to proceed.
(1) If I let SA transfer my PB files wholesale, then I'll be taking my 10.4 life with me. That's not why I bought a 10.6 machine!
So as far as Apple stuff goes,
(2) I would like *not* to transfer it as much as possible. In particular, not have the old /Applications replace the new one.
(3) I would like to transfer the settings as well as support files that my own use has generated, eg, preferences, bookmarks, cookies, etc.
If you have walked this fine line before, please tell me how to proceed. Tentatively, I am thinking: Use SA to transfer my Users account, most other stuff but NOT Applications. I'll transfer non-Apple apps by hand, and use the Apple apps that came with 10.6. (Hopefully, my settings, preferences, bookmarks, etc would have been transferred and the apps will see them.)

Just migrated from mobileme to icloud and haven't been able to receive email on my Mail app since. Running an iMac with OS 10.7.3. I can send email okay and access incoming email through icloud on my browser. The error in the Mail applications says "The server “p99-imap.mail.me.com” refused to allow a connection on port 143." Another thread suggested checking the "Use SSL" box in the advanced tab; I tried that and it didn't fix the problem. I notice that the Incoming Mail Server setting was changed during the migration, it now says "p99-imap.mail.me.com". The field is greyed out and can't be edited so I guess thats what Apple wants.

I have no desire to upgrade my MBP 2010 to Lion, yet I have a MM account and use AddressBook, Mail, iCal, Facetime. What should I do? I'd rather sit it out 'till Mountain Lion is out. Can I still use said 3 apps?

My Address Book hasn't been syncing on MobileMe for almost two years. MobileMe tech support and even the engineers have tried and failed. Needless to say, it's a bit out of date on my iPhone. Whenever I notice that there's old contact info on my phone, I change it. But it's by no means as current as the Address Book on my MacBook Pro. What is going to happen on iCloud if gets two versions of my Address Book? Will it know which contacts are more current and update or will I have a giant mess on my hands? Is there anyway to have iCloud access only my laptop Address Book? I was hoping to migrate today or tomorrow.

From what I can figure out, MobileMe stores my emails on the server. Does that mean I don't have a copy of my emails on my hard drive even though I check email using the Mail application on my MacBook Pro? In the sidebar of Mail I notice there's a section called "On My Mac" with a folder called "Local Backup" with a bunch (but not all) of the same folders that are under ".Mac Account". The most recent email in these folders is from 2010. I have no idea how this folder got there or if it's even needed.Am I obsessing over this for nothing? I feel like I should have a backup of my emails after reading that once I've migrated to iCloud, I'm cut off of MobileMe. I need to delete my MobileMe account from my iPhone before migrating to resolve an Address Book historical sync problem. That means the only copy of my emails will be on MobileMe which I won't be able to get to. Unless of course, Mail saves them somewhere on my hard drive.

Is migrating from one computer to another equal to merging the 2 computers or is it only transferring the old one (10.6.8) to the new one (10.9.3) ?

I run Contacts on both my iPad2 and my iMac; I find that in the listing to the left of the Contacts on the iMac, 'All iCloud' appears twice; one with 519 entries (which is correct) and the other with 78 entries, 77 of them also in the other one. They are synced via iCloud, not iTunes; I've tried to sort this by exporting the vCards to my desktop and then attempting to trash Contacts and reinstall but this is not permitted as it's 'required by OSX', which seems reasonable. It sometimes becomes a problem when I'm using lists and discover that some people are not on the list I am using because - for some inexplicable (to me, at least) reason, they're on the other iCloud list.

I'll get a new MBP next week and I'm planning to have a fresh clean start by manually moving the folders and apps I use. My question is: Will I be able to access the backup files I currently have on time machine from my new mac? if so how does the authentication work? Should I do anything to make this easier?

I have been migrating files from a PC to a MacBookPro. The migration screen is no longer up on the PC, but the Mac screen says "about 11 minutes remaining." This has been up for about an hour with no progression. Is there a way I can stop the migration where it is and finish manually?

Migrated from an older 2007 iMac to a new iMac w/ OSX Lion via ethernet connection between the two machines.
Migration appeared to proceed smoothly but on starting the new Mac I noticed that I did not have any of my emails (client is Mail), nor my contacts.
So what exactly does the migration assistant transfer?...
I am also looking for the User/Library section and cannot find it. On my old machine all the email attachments where stored there. Has the folder structure changed that much? (and can you point me to some article that illustrates the changes between the 2 OSs?)

I've just received my new Mac and I'm wanting to transfer my documents etc. from my old Mac to my new one. I'd rather do it manually than use the migration assistant as I have more control that way.
I've got my two Macs set up side by side and have shared the home directory of my user on the other Mac. Thing is, I've run into a permissions problem. Obviously my old Mac only lets my old user access the files.
Is there any way to migrate the files between users on two Macs manually without resorting to something like "chmod -R 777 ~" to mass change permissions? Ideally, I'd like to just drag the files across and have them automatically change permissions when they're transferred to my new Mac.

Here is what I have: Macbook Pro - utilizing around 80GB of HDD. I have a large iTunes library, a small amount of Word and Excel files, very few applications (VLC, Microsoft Office, Transmission, Toast, etc.), and a large iPhoto library. I have everything backed up on a Western Digital external hard drive using Time Machine. Over the past two years, I have accumulated a lot of files and extensions that I don't need or want. I am soon going to trade for either a 15-inch MBP or an iMac. Rather than restore everything on the new machine using my Time Machine back up, I just want to start with a brand new computer. How do I get single applications from my external hard drive to the new computer? For example, I want MS Office on the new one. How do I get it over without reinstalling with the disc?

We are trying to migrate our files from an old PowerPC iMac to our new iMac. The migration tool did not bring over music or photos or some of our folders. So I tried again with Time Machine. I now have 2 instances of Time Machine running on the new iMac. One is the old Mac and one is the New Mac. How do I transfer the files (music, photos, docs, etc) from one view to the other. We would like to recycle our old Mac but not until we have saved all our work and wiped the old one clean. I have tried saving and pasting but to no avail.

I recently installed Mavericks on my iMac. Any software that is connected to iCloud (FaceTime, Messaging, Calendar, Contacts, etc.) constantly asks for my apple ID password. iTunes is doing the same thing. Feel like I had a similar problem with Key Chain in my Mac Pro.

In Settings I confirmed my iCloud account is logged in. I feel like this is more of a bug than anything else. Can I reset Notes or reinstall Notes? The computer is an older Mac Pro and has gone through many software updates...

My partner has just taken delivery of a wonderful new 27" iMac, and is wanting to migrate all of her stuff from a G5. However, the how to do it words seem to suggest that everything on the G5 should be neat. Such things as all documents should be in the Document folder, but does this mean all personal letters as well? She has asked me questions on these things that have made me stop and think. Then I realize that I really don't know the answers.
What actually is the intended structure of the Mac OSX system? What is supposed to be in the Documents, Library, etc. And does every user have there own set of these folders.

I have a question about an impending migration that I'm going to have to do. I'm looking at getting a new iMac, and I want to transfer my data over to it. The problem is that I originally partitioned my current iMac's internal hard disk and moved my Users folder to the secondary partition. So currently:
Partition 1: Snow Leopard (and assorted system files), 54.9 GB Max Capacity
Partition 2: Ozmosis (Users folder and all my data--photos, music, etc.) 445.41 GB Max Capacity
If I want to use the Migration Assistant on my new iMac, do I have to get rid of my secondary partition and move my Users folder back to the sole Snow Leopard partition? Obviously you can see my problem, being that my Snow Leopard partition only has 55 GB of storage, and I have well over that in my Users folder. What about Time Machine? Will Time Machine know to back-up my Users folder even though it's on a completely different partition? If it's smart enough to back both partitions up (which I don't think it'll do), will it restore it on my new iMac with only one partition?
