ICloud :: How To Move / Save File Created With Keynotes

May 30, 2012

I create a file with Keynotes. I save it in my Mac. But how do I move it/save it in to iCloud? I can't find the automatic way to do it. At the moment, I am opening iCloud in my browser and move the file manually.

OS X :: Can't See A PC Created GIF File Over Network?

Aug 13, 2010

I have Corel X5 set up on my PC which is networked to my iMac. Just installed SP1 for X5, don't know if this is doing anything weird. X5 seems to be working just fine BTW, but I created a simple vector logo tonight and exported the file as a GIF as it will be incorporated into another graphic on my iMac. Anyway, I created a shared folder on my mac's desktop, and when I try to drag the file from the PC to the mac it says I need permission?

ICal Calendar Duplicates Created By ICloud

Apr 28, 2012

Two weeks after I migrated to Lion, I stopped syncing my iPad and iPhone through iTunes and turned on iCloud.I had 15 years of calendar data, and after the iCloud syncing, most of the entries were duplicated or even triplicated. It took me 5 days and about 5 hours with Apple tier 2 advisors to resolve the problem. The support communities had useful info, but it was scattered around.I am consolidating the useful stuff in this posting so that it may help others.

1.The important thing to understand about iCloud is that it considers itself the "master repository".Its primary purpose is to backup your data, but it cannot distinguish your data if it originates from multiple sources. My 3 devices (mac, iPad, iPhone) synced fine via iTunes. But when I connected the 3 devices to iCloud, iCloud did not continue from where iTunes left off.Instead, the calendars on the 3 devices were Merged in iCloud, resulting in duplicates. However, many repeating events (events that spanned multiple days) were not duplicated.

2.At this point, your calendar is corrupted.Don't try to fix a calendar while you are connected to iCloud (see why below).Your best choice is to delete the calendar from all platforms and then restore your pre-iCloud calendar from your archive or from Time Machine.  First, disconnect your calendar on ALL devices (Apple->Preferences->iCloud->uncheck the calendar). This will delete calendar from those devices. Then go into iCloud and delete the calendar there (click the Edit button at the top of the calendar list and then click the minus button).

3.Restore your pre-iCloud calendar to your mac.Because this is pre-iCloud, all your calendars should be under the "On my Mac" section.Go into Apple->Preferences->iCloud->check the calendar.iCloud will start syncing immediately and your iCal will say "iCal - Updating" in the title bar. When it stops Updating, check your data. You will see that all of your calendars in the Mac are now in the iCloud section.

4. Add a test event and see how it updates on iCloud. Now go to your iPad and iPhone If you did step 2 correctly, both of their calendars should be empty.Turn iCloud back on on those devices through Preferences, and the data will sync to your devices.By default, the mobile devices only sync I think 2 weeks of data.I discovered that even tho I could get 15 years of data to sync to my iPad, the iPad could not display it.So I am going to have to tolerate having only a short period of data on my mobile devices and keep the whole archive only on my mac.TIPS I LEARNEDBackup your calendar and address book BEFORE you go to iCloud.Use the File->Export menus to export an archive of the whole calendar (.icbu) or whole address book (.abbu).In addition, you might want to export each of your calendars and address book groups as individual .ics files and .vcf files. This way, if you need to combine calendars, you can simply import a .ics file into an existing calendar in iCal.Why can't you delete duplicates while you are connected to iCloud?I tried to do that, and just when I got close to the very end, iCloud seemed to get confused, and then it suddenly put all the duplicates back.Several hours wasted. If you delete the calendar from iCloud and then try to restore it to your mac, it is very important to disconnect iCloud first. Otherwise, iCloud syncs the deletion back to the mac and deletes the calendar you just restored.Just remember, everytime you disconnect from iCloud, it deletes the calendar on your device. So the sequence must be:disconnect iCloud first, and THEN restore. When you turn iCloud back on, iCloud sees this as a whole new calendar.I was used to the replication idea of Lotus Notes, where the newest time stamp determined which event to keep in a sync conflict.iCloud does not work that way.It doesn't use timestamps and has no idea of latest event. It just merges everything. When you first turn iCloud on, if it asks you if you want to merge your Address Book, realize that iCloud will merge at the field level. So for a contact, if you made changes in work phone on two devices, that contact will now have 2 work phone fields. How to restore a Lion calendar from Time Machine:  In Finder, go to the Go menu.Press the option key, and Library shows up in the dropdown menu.Select Library and then open the Calendars folder.Copy everything in it to a safe place and then delete the originals. Now, open Time Machine, and it will navigate to that hidden folder.Restore everything in the Calendars folder. How to restore a Snow Leopard calendar from Time Machine:If you have since migrated to Lion, use the method above to get to the Calendars folder and clear it out.Now open Time Machine and go to the Library->Calendars folder and restore everything in that folder.

ICloud On Mac :: Why Are PDFs Created On IMac Saved

Aug 23, 2014

On my iMac I created a PDF of a PowerPoint deck (File>Print>PDF) and Saved it to Documents on my iMac.  I found that the PDF was saved to iCloud.

But I could not find iCloud using Finder on my iMac.  I had to go to TextEdit where I have a choice of iCloud or On My Mac in the file listing.  Nothing like this on Finder on my iMac.  I had to go to TextEdit to delete this pdf in iCloud.

This happened 2x to the same PowerPoint file - saving to iCloud. How do I use Finder to go to files in iCloud?I created a test Excel file in the same fashion and it saved to my Documents folder on my Mac.

Why is the PointPoint deck PDF being saved to iCloud and not to my iMac?

OS X Technologies :: Add Account Privileges To A Newly Created File?

Jun 11, 2012

I have multipe accounts on my Mac.  Two of them need to share certain files, but not with everyone else so I can't use the Shared folder.  When I create a new text file with AppleScript it has default ownership to the account that created it, but I need to give read & write privilages to it to the other account as well.  I can do this manually, but there are lots of files sometimes.  One trick I've found is to reset privilages from the next higher folder.  This saves time, but sometimes I forget.  Also when I do this it causes Time Machine to think all the files in that folder have been updated.  If the folder is large it may cause Time Machine to purge a old backup version.  What I'd like to do is find some AppleScript code I can use to add user "A" with read & write access to the permissions of a new file at the time my AppleScript creates that file.

OS X :: OpenOffice - Which File Type To Save As - Can Load The .odt File Just Fine

I'll be sending this out to a few companies and I'd like to know what the best file type is to select that will be readable by everyone? Mac Mini :: Open .ods Zip File Which Save As .cpgz File Extension?

Apr 10, 2012

I try to open an Open Office spread sheet and it simply saves the file as another file with the .cpgz extension which does the same thing.  This did not happen a couple weeks ago; I think my download for Apple updates may be the culprit.  My OS X is now 10.7.3, I believe originally it was 10.7.2 but I could be wrong.

The original document is a zip archive but now "saves as" a .cpgz archive.  I have tried the "Unarchiver", which I just downloaded, but it only creates another file with subfolders, none of which appear to have my original spread sheet.  (To be honest, I never noticed this Open Office spread sheet file was a zip file until a few minutes ago when I tried to unsuccessfully open it).

Why Does Mac OX 10.6.8 Keep Making Copies Of File Anytime Download / Copy / Move File

Feb 25, 2012

Why does Mac OX 10.6.8 keep making copies of a file anytime I download, copy, or move a file? It will copy, dowload or move the file, then begin making copies until I reboot. This makes it impossible to deal wit hfiles unless I want to spend a lot of time rebooting after every time, then deleting all the redundant copies.

OS X :: Unable To Retrieve Lost File / Backup Created Using Time Machine

Mar 25, 2010

I have a file I alter once about a week, each time I alter it I save it as a new one, with a date included in the name.So I have a series of files something like

xxxxx march 13.numbers
xxxxx march 07.numbers
xxxxx march 01.numbers
etc.

This morning when I updated and saved the march13 file I accidentally saved it as xxxxxx march 13, not xxxxxx march 20 which it should have been. No problem, go into time machine and retrieve the march 13 file I thought. Its not there. Its not there from just before the save to any time it should be there !

Luckily I was able to retrieve it as I also have a once a week online backup so I went into the last one of those and retrieved "xxxxxx march13" which proves it did exist, it has a creation date of march 17 but if I look at TM for march 18 its not there - why isn't it in my time machine backup?

All the other files in that folder are as expected so the only thing that makes any sense to me is that TM hasn't been backing up over the past week or so but TM error logger shows no errors.

OS X :: Sort By The Date A File Is Placed Into A Folder (Date Modified/Created Not Working)

Jun 3, 2010

I have a folder where I place an ever growing collection of my favorite songs. Before I switched to Mac, on Windows, when I wanted to revisit songs I most recently added to the folder, I would sort the songs by the Date Modified and it would order the files I placed in the folder by date.

In OSX, however, there must be a slightly different meaning to "Date Modified," as it does not quite sort my songs by the order they were added. It gets some of it right, but there's plenty of files that are out of order--tune "x", which I know was placed in the folder a week ago is actually listed further down the list with songs placed in the folder months ago.

Is there a way to have OSX sort files in order of the date it was placed in a folder? Neither "Date Modified" nor "Date Created" works 100% as I thought it would. Or is the OSX definition of Date Modified/Created slightly different than Windows?
