I've got Win7 pro and XP Pro as virtual machines. No bootcamp. I'd love to copy certain chunks of large data straight across when both virtual machines are running but don't see a way to do it without using a USB drive, etc.
View 3 Replies'd like to run Win 7 on virtualization software, but not sure of the best way to back up, as I've been reading a lot about how Time Machine (unless you configure it not to) will save the VM folder as one large file, which of course could make the back up tens of GBs and bloat a drive quickly. I'm planning to connect an external HDD partitioned for both Time Machine (for incremental backups) and Superduper(for more easily bootable restore).
VMware Fusion (for instance) recommends backing up within the VM itself. But this alone doesn't seem like a good strategy for catastrophic failure of a HDD.
are there any free virtual machines to run windows xp/vista on os x?

I am interested to see if any MR users out there use their Mac Pro for running multiple virtual machines concurrently? Plenty of folks run one or two even on a MBP with little problems at all. I am considering running 4 at the same time. Is this going to work? I plan on running Vmware Fusion 3 with 4 virtual machines with Windows 2003 Server Enterprise. This will hopefully work as my all-in-one virtual lab for my security research and development.
I was thinking of an 8 core 2.66 (2009) MP with 24GB of RAM to start with.

My cousin is thinking about purchasing the Rev B SSD model but he requires Windows XP for work purposes. He won't be running much, just some basic software. I run a Vista virtual machine on my current 17" and it tends to studder a little sometimes.
Looking to get a new desktop and I've decided an iMac fits the bill perfectly as I believe it's the best value on the market by far. Anyway, I plan to get Fusion 3.0 here fairly soon, and will likely use Windoze7, and a distro or two or linux with it. Do you think that having 8GB of RAM would benefit enough to go for it? (It'd just order it afterward I'm sure, and install myself) I would be using both MS and Linux OS's for work, and hopefully some play if VM's will allow some decent gaming.

If i know the correct URL the VM will start or stop. The problem is that the script must be started with my user-id. The _www user cannot start the VM's. Is it possible that i run a CGI-Script with a different user-id? Or do you have an other idea how can i realise my requirement.Â

I have been archiving old creative work by copying from a mac server network share onto my external HDD and then burning to DVD.However I am now noticing that while the font files appear to be burned they are attempting to open in terminal on the macs and have 0kb file size.Attempting to figure out why I am browsing to current jobs from the win7 machine and noticing that these also have 0kb file size. But from the mac server they appear fine.

I am trying to send two images as attachments to a user on a Windows machine. The attachments are appearing in-line in the body of the email and do not show as attachments on Windows. I am attaching the 2 images by clicking the paper clip on the new mail message and browsing to the image location to select them. I am selecting both images and they appear in-line in my outgoing message and as attachments. I have checked the 'Send Windows Friendly' box. The Windows recipient can only see the in-line images.Â

An HFSJ mac HD crashed from another mac. I connected it externally, via USB, to a working macbook pro and installed diskwarrior on the working macbook pro's hard drive.
I started diskwarrior from the OS (I didn't boot using the disc) and it ran for a few days, trying to rebuild the directory for the crashed mac HD.
It concluded that the crashed mac HD was mechanically failing and could not replace the original directory with the rebuilt directory and, therefore, it could not display an original and preview pane, side-by-side.
It was, however, able to offer just the preview of the rebuilt directory and advised that I copy the data off to another storage device, which I am attempting to do now.
The problem is the preview directory is locked and read-only.
When I attempt to copy files over to another storage device, OS X, with respect to the preview directory, indicates that "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.
I clicked on get info for the preview directory and the permissions are grayed out. There is a checkmark for the "Ignore ownership of this volume" checkbox. For my username, it says read and write, and I am the sole user on this machine.
it also has "staff" and "everyone" as usernames, where "staff" is read & write and "everyone" is read only. The lock is locked and, like the rest of this section, grayed out and cannot be changed.
I realize that DiskWarrior automatically locks the preview of the rebuilt directory. But how am I supposed to copy files to a different storage device if I can't change permissions?
Edit: I should mention it is DiskWarrior 4.2 and Mac OS X 10.5.8. The crashed Mac HD I am unsure, but I found a user guide on it for Tiger. So, it is probably 10.4.x
I have a mac powerbook g3 laptop and have successfully installed Virtual PC on. My problem is that when I open Virtual PC it just comes up with a black Virtual PC programme window. Once its done that I am unable to do any thing with Virtual PC because its frozen and in order to get out of the programme I have to force quit it. What do I do to get it to run windows 98? (I have both the Virtual PC disk and the windows 98 disk).

I backup my photography on a WD My Passport. I have only used PC's with this in the past, I am now trying to back up some more files and it won't let me copy them to the drive. The permissions say that I have read only access on my Mac. I have read some threads, and they all say that I have format the hard drive to change the permissions and that I will not be able to copy over files bigger than 4G. I have RAW files that can get quite large so limiting the size is an option.

i can connect to the C$/D$ admin shares via smb://.... only when the windows firewall is OFF - when i enable it, i can't connect

But on the G5 next to it, I need to do some Windows testing. I managed pretty well with getting Parallels Window environments into a sandbox, just internet connectivity, access to the optical drives and one shared drive is perfect, and I want to achieve the same level of a sandbox in Virtual PC v7.
Background is, I've used VPC v3 on G3, v5 on my G4. Both of these were a dream (OK slow on the G3) but VPC 7 is required to run on my dual G5. From the manual I see it installs all kinds of intergration tools into the heart of the Mac OS (ouch), requires a restart (I restart about once every 3 months due to the amount of stuff I keep running). I can live with this, if I can be sure that I can turn off all the integration tools I don't want. From the manual I can see all the Application and Client OS Environment settings, some look as though they turn off unwanted features, but I would like to know from someone who used it, just how configurable it is into getting it into the proverbial sandbox.
