Windows On Mac :: Installing Snow Leopard Upgrade To Parallels 5

Dec 28, 2009

I have a MacBook, 2Gig memory, 2.18 mhz, running leopard. My best Bible software has to be windows (Logos) Mac version is no where near its potential here, everything PC has crashed in last 8 months. I pulled out o;d Parallels 3 and a whole bunch of old software, getting ready to get to migrate to Win 7.

I have ordered Snow Leopard.
I have ordered Parallels for Mac ver 4 (OLD VER ?)
Getting free upgrade to Parallels 5
Will probably get an OEM version of Win 7 Ultimate.

1- Can I just install the upgrade to parallels 5
2- if I have to install parallels 4, all I have is XP.
3- My Logos Bible software will 'Sing' on Win 7 need to get there
4- Do not want to reinstall XP as Win 7 has to gut it.

I would rather just not do any of this and wait for my first SS check! But I have to and do not know what to do first. It would seem Snow Leopard but I do not want to do Parallels 4 then parallels 5 if I do not have to. I am canning all my PC stuff and love the intuitiveness of all Apple stuff including software.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Upgrading From 10.6.8 To 10.7 Affect Parallels/Windows?

Jun 5, 2012

I have a Macbk pro w/10.6.8  & I want to upgrade to 10.7.  However, I avoided this because I do not know how it will affect my Parallels (Build 6.0.12106  Revision 692267)?  I have many screen prints filed in files on my desktop (lots of genealogy) & I have read that nothing much transfers to Lion.

One of the reasons I am ready to make the jump is because iphoto does NOT work.  After an automatic upgrade, every time you open it, you get the most basic framework (no words or data)of iphoto but the circle (the gray slats one not the color spinning wheel) just sits there & spins forever & never loads. We took it in under hardware warranty & they replaced the SD card & USB slots & whatever they are attached to, but that did not solve the problem [it just solved the problem of the slots not being recognized].  Even the guy @ apple support couldn't help & we tried to rebuild it, but NOTHING!  It just spins!!!  I have seen so many people w/that same problem--if it was their update that screwed up iphoto, they should have a patch to fix it!

But, I digress:  I have Quicken on the Windows side & it get's backed up often, but over the years it is a nightmare each time I have to restore it from external hd or the cloud...much time & tears trying to get it back to the way it should be. Can anyone tell me what to do in order to protect my parallels before I upgrade?

Windows On Mac :: Installing Windows Via Parallels Or Boot Camp Partition / Memory Required?

Sep 15, 2009

I just purchased a new iMac (2.66 c2d & 4gb of ram), Parallels 4, and Windows XP. I would like to get great performance whenever I use Windows XP and would like to know which installation procedure would help accomplish that.

Would Parallels provide me with a better user experience by installing Windows directly via Parallels OR by having Parallels utilizing a Boot Camp Partition? Which is better and why? Also, how much memory should I allocate to Parallels/Windows XP?

OS X :: Installing Snow Leopard/Windows 7 On Mac With Bootcamp

Oct 30, 2009

I have a unibody 13" MacBook running Leopard with Bootcamp running Windows Vista. I want to try and make the move this weekend to both Snow Leopard AND Windows 7.

First, what is my best plan of attack here? Will Snow Leopard install just fine and ignore my current 25gb partition of Vista currently set up? (i.e. not effect it at all). I would assume so but I'm not totally sure.

Second, what is the best way to go about installing Windows 7? I am a university student and I will be getting the $30 upgrade version of Windows 7. I've heard that doing a clean install is the best way to go instead of going over vista, so I hear I need to make an iso out of the upgrade version and use that?

I'm planning on doing Snow Leopard first, then Windows 7 second as this seems like the most logical order for me.

Windows On Mac :: Installing 7 RC Over 7 Beta In Snow Leopard?

Sep 2, 2009

I currently have the Win 7 Beta installed on a dedicated internal hard drive (in my Mac Pro). I originally installed it using Bootcamp, then later bought VMware Fusion 2.0 so I could hot swap between OS X and Win 7. Fusion detected my original Bootcamp installation; I didn't do any reinstallation of the Beta.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard last week.

I'd like to install the Release Candidate. I realize it requires a clean install (I don't want to mess with using the terminal workaround I've heard about for installing over the Beta). What's the best way to do this? Should I simply run the Snow Leopard version of Bootcamp and have it do a new install? Do I have to wipe and reformat the Win drive, or will Bootcamp take me through that automatically.

Windows On Mac :: Installing With Snow Leopard Bootcamp

Oct 16, 2009

I can install snow leopard clean on a fresh drive on my MBP with my upgrade disk. It is the disk that came as a drop-in dvd with the MBP, along with its original install disks. If I install windows using bootcamp assistant, do I use that disk when it asks for the drivers, etc. during installation? Or do I use my leopard install disks that came with my computer? Is the snow leopard bootcamp process any different from the process in leopard? I had windows Vista on there fine before upgrading my hard drive and going to snow leopard. Do I need to print out those 25 pages again?

Windows On Mac :: Installing Parallels Tools While In Boot Camp Windows 7

Mar 2, 2009

I am trying to set up a Parallels 4 VM for a Windows 7 x64 Build 7000 boot camp partition, but parallels tools will not install. Half way through the process, a windows unsigned driver security box pops up, and when I tell it to install anyway, it still rolls back the installation process and I get the message "An error has occured while installing parallels tools, click OK to restart your computer and try again." or something to that effect. I have tried this about 15 times, and I have tried uninstalling/deleting the VM and re-creating the VM to no avail.

What I want to know: Is there a way to manually install Parallels Tools while running in the boot camp partition, just like installing any other application? I want to install it outside of Parallels, since for some reason it keeps screwing itself up when trying to set up the drivers as a VM.

Windows On Mac :: First Time Windows Installing Boot Camp And Parallels?

Feb 22, 2010

I have a 15" MBP. Hardware in my sig.

I'm getting Win7 this week. I'm getting it free from school and unsure at this point whether it will be 32 or 64 bit. That said, here's what I want to do with my setup.

1: School. I have to use Office 2007 for my classes. Office 2008 for Mac is not supported, because some of the formulas that you create in 2008 won't convert correctly into 2007 format and I can't have that. I will also use IE due to the fact that neither Firefox nor Safari will play my Mediasite classes correctly in Silverlight. Only IE allows me to speed up the playback. I am going to use Parallels 5 for this.

2: I game, but not much. The one game I love and will definitely put on my Mac is Morrowind. I want to use Boot Camp for this reason.

Soooo, I have been told that if I'm going to install Windows under Boot Camp that I should do that install first. Then install Parallels. I'm really not sure how to do any of this. I understand that I will only need to install Windows a single time and that it should work under with Boot Camp or Parallels.

i have the Boot Camp install PDF from the Apple site, but I'd love some tips, tricks, help, advice, words of wisdom, etc., from this forum. Please tell me what you think about which to install first, what approach to take, how much HDD space I should partition when I install under Boot Camp, etc.

I was planning on installing Win7 on it and using Parallels for the times I have no Mac option (specific games or apps).

Should I install it as a boot camp partition and then link it in Parallels or just do a clean VM install in Parallels? I'm curious as to what the experiences are and what is my best course of action when my machine shows up.

Windows On Mac :: Installing 7 In Parallels?

Mar 24, 2010

I have Windows XP and Vista loaded on my Macbook using Parallels.

Both run fine without any issues.

I loaded Windows 7 and it too runs fine except it won't pickup and recognize the Mac's network adapters. I cannot connect wirelessly to the Internet with Windows 7.

Both Win XP and Vista connect wireless - no problem.

In the Windows 7 install I get a code 10 error. I have tried getting the network adapter drivers from the Mac by install DVDs and "Computer" (right clicking on network adapter and installing Broadcom adapter.

Anyone else experiencing this problem. I have checked out Parallels and they have nothing on it yet. I have submitted a ticket of complaint to Parallels today to see what they say...

2. I'm in a college CS program, and I'd like to be able to dual boot Windows onto the laptop. I think in order to do that, I have to do a clean install of OS X after installing Windows - can I do that with the upgrade disc?

Windows On Mac :: Installing Win7 - Difference Between BootCamp / Parallels

Jun 2, 2010

New to macs here actually new to apple also. I had a few questions regarding installing windows 7 on my late 2009 macbook pro 15". What is the difference in bootcamp and parallels is it? Does one run like a virtual windows in the background while bootcamp let's you boot in either osx or windows? I have a xps desktop from Dell that has windows vista pre installed. Now I bought a copy of windows 7 when it was released fro newegg. Now I assume I cannot use that disc and serial, is that correct? Since I use it on my xps desktop? I would need to purchase another copy of windows correct? With that said, which version do I purchase? 32 or 64 bit? My Macbook pro is pretty much already setup (apps, pics, music, etc) can i still install windows 7 or will it format my HD and i would need to then reinstall everything on the Mac side? What are the "major" cons to installing windows 7 on a mbp? So far I have gathered battery life being the biggest con, any others?

OS X :: Snow Leopard Update - Like Windows In Place Upgrade - Or Clean?

Jul 15, 2009

I'm thinking of buying my first Mac ever pretty soon. I can get an educational discount and also get a free iPod Touch if I buy before September 15. I understand that Snow Leopard will be available "in September" so I will have to receive it separately if I buy my Mac between now and then. So, I've never owned Macs before, so I'm wondering how the upgrade from Leopard -> Snow Leopard will happen. Is it like Windows where you can choose to do a "clean installation" or an "in-place" upgrade? Coming from the Windows world, I tend to lean more towards clean installations.

Windows On Mac :: Installing Win7 With BootCamp And Upgrade Discs

Dec 21, 2009

I just bought a Macbook pro a few months ago and I love it. However, I do need windows for some things and I am pretty set on installing Windows 7 with bootcamp. A relative of mine bought a dell and was sent the free upgrade discs. He got an oranage disc that says Operating System on the front. It also says Windows 7 Upgrade Option as well as This DVD supports 64-bit edition only. Lastly it says For Use Only as an Upgrade to a Qualifying Dell Windows 7 Upgrade Option PC.

My question is are the setup files on there and everything I need to successfully install Windows 7 on my mac? My guess is yes, but I really do not want to mess anything up so I wanted to make sure! It came with a gray disc that has a product key on it and is labeled Upgrade Assistant and says Insert this DVD before upgrading to Windows 7. Not sure if that matters or not. Can I use this disc or these discs to get myself Windows 7 on my Macbook?

OS X :: Parallels 4 Or VMware Fusion 2 On Snow Leopard?

Oct 17, 2009

Was just looking for some advice on which virtual machine you guys are finding works better on Snow Leopard.
I have Parallels 4, which I had on Leopard as well, with windows XP. Pn leopard it ran beautifully, however since upgrading I find its unbearably slow, and causes my whole system to slow down. I dont know if this is with parallels or with my system in general, as I have had a bit of trouble with Snow Leopard, though I believe I have sorted that out.

How have people found VMware to run in comparison to parallels? Is it worth switching?

OS X :: Leopard Upgrade To Snow Leopard ... The Same As The Full Version Of Snow Leopard?

Jun 13, 2009

... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.

However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.

My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?

Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?

I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.
