OS X :: Parallels 4 Or VMware Fusion 2 On Snow Leopard?
Oct 17, 2009
Was just looking for some advice on which virtual machine you guys are finding works better on Snow Leopard.
I have Parallels 4, which I had on Leopard as well, with windows XP. Pn leopard it ran beautifully, however since upgrading I find its unbearably slow, and causes my whole system to slow down. I dont know if this is with parallels or with my system in general, as I have had a bit of trouble with Snow Leopard, though I believe I have sorted that out.
How have people found VMware to run in comparison to parallels? Is it worth switching?

Does anyone know how to get Snow Leopard to work in VMware Fusion? When I go to make a new Virtual Machine I can't select the .dmg. I even tried to convert the .dmg to .img but that didnt make any difference.

I recently installed VMware fusion on my MBP, but I later noticed it to be slower.
I dedicated about 2GB of RAM to the Virtual Machine. The Windows 7 OS runs fine, but it's the Snow Leopard that became sluggish.
Do I need to change any settings on the Virtual Machine to make my SL run faster?
I really miss my fast SL!

I wanted to to know and make a post comparing VMware Fusion 3 and Parallels Desktop 5 with the new updates. Which one is better in running multiple OSs at the same time. Do they support hypervisor. Cause i want to create a virtual environment to learn Server 2008 and Mac Os Server. Which one would be better to use VMware Fusion 3 or Parallels Desktop 5. As I said before I want this thread to be used to compare the two programs so if anybody else has question post them more question the better, of coarse if we get answers.

Can VMWare Fusion or Parallels Desktop run operating systems other than Windows? Not that I need it or want it, I'm just curious.

I am an architect and I will be mostly using my new imac to work on Autocad 2010 along with a couple of other windows based applications. I understand the concept of the three methods of using windows but I do not know which would provide the best performance whilst working on Autocad, without it becoming a laborious task to load it up everyday.
I will be rocking dual monitors so I quite like the idea of Parallels or VMWare so that I can have Windows open on one monitor and Leopard on the other. But will this have a negative effect on the performance of Autocad? Also, which of these two is the better?

I'm currently running Parallels 3.0 (XP Pro) off of a Boot Camp partition on my Macbook Pro. I'd like to give VMWare Fusion an audition, and am wondering if I can run it off that same BC partition that Parallels uses -- or if that will create some kind of conflict that might damage the partition. I'm not talking about having Parallels and VMWare running _simultaenously_ -- only installing them both to use the same partition.

However, I am unwilling to give up the easy of using AnyDVD and CloneDVD2. I am successfully using them via Boot Camp, but I really don't want to reboot just to copy a movie.I have tried Sun's VirtualBox and get an error when I start the copy process. My question to the world: Has anyone successfully used VMware Fusion 2 or Parallels with AnyDVD and CloneDVD2?

I'm having pretty bad difficulties with Windows 7 and Parallels Desktop. I know it's not supported yet, but some folk have it working. I can boot up, but I can't install Parallels Tools. I changed the Configuration to "Windows 2008 Server" like someone suggested in another forum, but fails to boot up.
Seems like VMWare are offering a better helping hand than Parallels Desktop - and while it is not supported yet by them, they say that if you use Windows 2008 Server Config everything works apart from sound.
So am I best giving it a bash with VMWare's Fusion? 30-day trial for free. But I'd rather try get Parallels working since I paid for it.

I am using NAT mode on the VMWare Fusion running Windows XP and am not able to get out to the Internet using IE or Firefox. I am able to get out to the Internet just fine from the host OS (Leopard) via Firefox. I can see on the task bar (lower right corner) the network connection lights going but only one of the computer icons light up as if there is a transmit but no receive. Usually if there is transmit and receive I'll see both computer icons lighting up.I've tried doing a ipconfig /release and /renew but to no avail.
From a dos prompt I've tried pinging "yahoo.com" but with no success. The strange thing is that when I used this VMWare image last a few weeks back it was fine. Not sure what's changed.

I "downgraded" my computer back to leopard (10.5.8) from snow leopard (10.6.1) via the SL install disk and a time machine backup. Now my VMware Fusion virtual machine for Windows XP is missing in action. Where can I find this on my Time Machine backup so that I can see if I can restore it?

I'll like to install Mac OS 10.4.6 in VMWare Fusion for stuff that I need to use 10.4 in. How might I do that? I've noticed they support 10.5 and 10.6 server but why not client? and why not 10.4 intel?
I have the install disks with me, if I need to make an iso or cdr of it, I know how.

Hello, everybody. I just discovered this forum, having finally taken the plunge and bought a Mac Pro to replace an aging Dell PC. (My wife has had a MacBook Pro since early last year, which is what convinced me to switch.)
My main use for the new machine will be photo processing, including astrophotography. I will obviously be able to use Photoshop natively, but will have to use Windows for one or two astro packages (and also for occasional use of an old Windows version of Mathematica).
So, my questions:
Am I right to think that it is possible to install Windows with Boot Camp and then also use the same Windows install under Fusion? If so, is there anything special that needs to be done when first doing the Boot Camp install?

I did a search on these forums, but came up with nothing. I have two virtual machines set up with VMWare Fusion, one is my Boot Camp partition for Windows XP Professional, the other is Mandriva Linux. In both of these virtual machines, the internet doesn't work. I tried changing the network settings for VMWare Fusion to both NAT and bridged, and neither of them work. It's a little annoying because there's not too much you can do without an internet connection.

I have the Windows 7 RC .iso (it's 64bit, I should have that one, right? Macs are 64 bit not 32 bit?) file and I want to install it through my VMware fusion app. Please note, this is NOT the beta for Windows 7, it's the newer RC.
How in the world do I do this? Some online guides say to set it as Windows Server 2008 x64, others say Windows Vista 64.
Could someone take me through the process of installing it? Or link me to a video or proven article? Setup goes through usually but the next time I boot into Windows 7 it tells me there was an installation error and Windows could not find the startup disk.

I have a DVD for my physics class that only can be opened in Windows for whatever reason (I also have a game I want to use). OS X recognizes it, but when I boot into Windows 7 (RTM Build 7600) in VMware Fusion, I see no sign of it.
How do I open it?

Running Fusion on my 2+ year old MBP has become a near hopeless frustration. When I first got the machine, it ran pretty well, but it hasn't for quite awhile now. It tends to be sluggish to the point of uselessness. Currently, I'm doing a trial of Fusion 3. I'm a licensed owner of the prior versions.
I don't need it much, but when I do, I really need it. I gave up on using it with Windows 7, which is fine, XP will do. Once in awhile, I'll run it and all will be well. Other times, most of the time, it's unusable. I see no pattern to what makes it run well or not. Earlier today, I rebooted and started Fusion all by itself and didn't run anything else. Didn't help much.
Anyone had these problems and found a solution? I see lots of people with problems and plenty of others without. But not many who've bridged the gap.

Yesterday I updates Lion to 10.7.4.Â
Today I went to run WinXP under VMWare Fusion 3 and got the following errors: "Unable to retrieve kernel zone size" "Failed to initialize monitor device." "Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to" It won't start. 1. Can I roll back 10.7.4 to 10.7.3? 3. Can I re-install 10.7.0 on an external disk or partition and run from that? Then I could recover some files from WinXP. (Last backup of WinXP is a couple weeks old). Other?

I am going to the University of Georgia next year. I am buying a Mac, but I will need to run Windows for a test program called sofTest. According to UGA, sofTest does not work with VMware Fusion or Parallels, only Boot Camp. If I create a Boot Camp partition and install Fusion on that partition, can I still use Boot Camp when I need to?

I have Windows 7 installed in VMWare fusion. Is there a way to directly boot from that installation into non-virtualized W7? Would bootcamp or something be able to read and boot from that installation?
I want to boot directly into W7 for gaming. The virtualized performance isn't really cutting it.
