I'm really new to OS X and macs in general. I just got the new macbook and I have Win7 professional 32bit on a dvd(legal). I have created a partition in bootcamp but every time it tries to boot from the dvd a black screen comes up with a flashing white cursor and thats it. Can anyone help me please as i really need win7 soon for college assignments.
View 2 Repliesseem to have a problem booting from my install DVDs of either Vista or Win 7 64-but editions on my MBP (santa rosa era I believe). Basically when I attempt to boot instead of getting the usual 'Press any key to boot from DVD' message, I get a menu appears like the following....

And it just sticks on there, keyboard doesn't respond at all and probably wouldn't do anything useful anyway since both options are completely blank so I have no idea what it is asking me to do. My Vista disc is a genuine original, my Win 7 disc is burned from the latest MS Public Beta, both do exactly the same thing.
Whether it is possible have a harddisk installed with Windows (say, Windows 7 or XP) and use it to boot directly on a Mac? That means, a single external removable harddisk installed with Windows which can be booted on both PC and a Mac. Is it possible to simply take a Windows installed harddrive and boot it on the Mac? And after using it on the Mac, the same Windows harddrive can be booted on a PC again?
I do understand that Parallels has Transporter, but what I do know is that it is some sort of "migration". Once "migrated", the Windows cannot be booted on a PC again. Am I right? (So, this solution won't work.) My scenario is that I use a Mac at home, but I need to boot into Windows to do some office work (of course, using my Mac). This Windows on an external harddrive must also be bootable on a PC whenever I bring to work in my office.
I've bought my 13" MBP (love it) but need to dual boot to run some programs, so I bought the Windows 7 Prof 64bit Upgrade. Now... because it's the upgrade version do I need to have a previous version of a Windows OS installed before I can upgrade or can I install straight away? Another question, at some point I'm tempted to upgrade to the 500gb Momentus XT. Will my Windows 7 disk be okay for multiple installs?

1. I lost the original 10.4 install disc that came with my computer - would that be a problem?
2. I'm in a college CS program, and I'd like to be able to dual boot Windows onto the laptop. I think in order to do that, I have to do a clean install of OS X after installing Windows - can I do that with the upgrade disc?
I am running a mac pro 2x2.26 quad core 8 gigs ram and the 4870 video card and everything works great(mac os 10.6.2) ,i also dual boot to windows vista 64 and that works good too. what would it take besides buying the win7 op system to run it instead of vista64 will the present bootcamp support win7 installation or do i need to download something newer for driver assistance
View 5 Replies View RelatedI believe the Macs at my college allow the user to select from either Mac OSX or Windows at startup. However, it's a little different than holding down the option key at startup. I think it shows both at startup by default and if none is chosen, Mac will boot automatically within a couple of seconds.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI plan on purchasing a Mac Mini server in the upcoming months and I'd like to be able to dual boot Windows on it when I need to. However the Mac OS Server (as far as I can tell) doesn't come with the Boot camp utility. So here's my conundrum: Do I ignore the server version of Mac and install Snow Leopard client with boot camp assistant or do I just use Disc Utility to create a second partition on one of the Mini drives and install Windows like any other computer? and keep using the server version of Snow Leopard?
I guess what I;m asking is which of these is the better option?
Installing Client and using Boot Camp Utility?
Or Creating a Partition manually and installing Windows on that?
(would my second option even work and would installing boot camp drivers after that process do any good or would it just bunk the Windows install?)
I have a MacBook Pro that came with Leopard. I am wondering if it is possible for me to shrink my Leopard partition and then install Tiger on a second partition. I have seen a similar thread about starting with Tiger and then adding a Leopard partition, but I want to go the other way around.
Also, is it possible for me to do this without having to reinstall Leopard, such as making a partition with Boot Camp and then tweaking it with the Disk Utility in the Tiger installer?
I currently have my Macbook Pro (newest version as of Aug 09) set up with Windows XP and Leopard via Bootcamp. I don't use Windows almost ever anymore so I wanted to install Ubuntu on it. IE, just load Ubuntu over Windows. The windows partition is NTFS formatted.
Before I attempt this, I was wondering if there are any simple-to-use tutorials out there. I have some experience with Linux, but it was years ago. Why I want to get back into it and learn a new OS again.
So just got my new MacBook Pro yesterday and loving it! I just got VMware Fusion and have a quick question (just don't want to mess anything up).
I have the Windows XP Black Edition image file, when I hit "Continue without Disk" on Fusion, next options are "Use installation disk image file", "Use existing virtual disk" or "Create custom virtual machine".
If I just have the .iso, what option should I go with?
Hey everybody; I use both Mac and Vista. I need the time for Vista to be correct for it is what I use for main business purposes at work. At home I use both...However when I fix the time on Windows Vista that makes the time on Mac OS X wrong...I know this is a dual boot issue...is there any fix for this? Or is there a third party app I can use to display my manually set time in the mac task/toolbar?

View 5 Replies View RelatedNetwork file sharing has always been buggy in my windows/mac mixed environment, but I managed to live with it. It worked for 85% of the time. However, since upgrading to SL, it now works less than 5%. It keeps telling me "there was an error connecting to the server. please check ip addr, etc.......". It'd work for a few minutes after each restart and then resume its habit of annoying the hell out of me. Is this a common problem with Sl and Win 7? (BTW, win7 to win7 or win7 to vista file sharing works perfectly).

I have a MacBook pro running Leopard (10.5.8). I am updating to a legitimate copy of Snow Leopard. I'm not installing from the discs, though. I made my flash drive a bootable disk, and I'm trying to install from the USB drive. I'm pretty confident that I did it correctly, but I am still having trouble. This is a brand new 8 gb flash drive. Using Disk Utility, I changed the drive to GUID Partition Table and formatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then I restored my Snow Leopard .dmg to the flash drive. Everything seems to be going smoothly at this point. I clicked on "Install Mac OS X" in the newly created bootable drive, and after going through the next few windows it started installing. The progress bar increased to about 7%, which took probably five minutes.
After this, it stated something along the lines of "installation will continue after reboot," and then rebooted itself. When OS X started back up, it was like nothing had happened. No changes, no continuing installation, it was like the installation hadn't begun at all. I tried a second time and the same thing happened: partial install, reboot, then nothing but regular startup. The USB Snow Leopard Install Drive does show up in the list of bootable drives in the "Startup Disk" portion of System Preferences. Even when I select it as the startup disk and restart, OS X just boots normally almost like it's ignoring my direction to boot from the Snow Leopard install drive. When I hold "alt" during startup to select the drive to boot from, only the regular Macintosh HD is presented as an option.
I don't understand why it would show up in System Preferences>Startup Disk, but not show up when pressing alt at startup. I noticed in Disk Utility that the "Owners Enabled" option was set to "No," so I used Terminal to change that to "Yes," even though I'm not sure it makes a difference at all. I named the USB Drive "Snow" and entered the line 'sudo /usr/sbin/vsdbutil -a /Volumes/Snow' in Terminal to do change owners enabled to yes. So this is where I am stuck. From what I can tell, I think I created the bootable usb drive properly, but I can't seem to boot from it and running the install off of the drive while already logged into OS X halts at about 7% and reboots.
I have a SL install disk. In my Core Duo MBP I can insert it and it boots from it no problem. In the MBP i5 it refuses to boot. Â

I am not using any raid at all on my 2008 mac pro. All I want to do is achieve using SATA drives via the ODD ports on my logic board to boot windows. I know it can be done. In case you don't believe me, here is the PROOF that shows I have installed the AHCI drivers successfully in windows: Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, the following exists:
Intel(R) 631xESB6321ESB/3100 Chipset Serial ATA Storage Controller, and underneath that says the following:
Intel(R) ESB2 SATA AHCI Controller.
That said, the matrix control console identifies all my 6 ports correctly. But when I go and hook up my SATA bootcamp hard drive to the ODD_SATA Port on my board, it doesn't boot! Why?? I went through all that trouble to install AHCI drivers in bootcamp annd it doesn't boot up at all? Yes, I would like to boot windows via ODD_Ports, but each time I do this it doesn't seem to boot. I am afraid to use a SATA optical drive, as the same thing will happen again. However, it appears that when I am in bootcamp, all my drives are recognized and working.
What do I need to do to get the ODD_SATA ports to recognize the AHCI during boot up(not while in Bootcamp)? I don't understand why it won't boot, after installing the matrix storage drivers for AHCI? I am leaving you with my skype id so you can chat with me on what to do here. Psychomacuser343 is my skype, while nadav333 is my AIM. As I said, I have tried everything, and while the ODD_SATA ports boot on the mac side, Even with the AHCI drivers in bootcamp, can't get bootcamp booted unless I remove it from the ODD_SATA port. Also, I managed to install one sata cable and not needing to mod my case fan.
I have Snow Leopard installed on an 8GB Flash Drive. It works all good and fine. The only thing is I don't want to do an upgrade, I want to do a FRESH erase and install of my machine (macbook). I tried plugging in the USB drive and restarting the computer while holding down "c", this proved to not work.
Any way that I can erase the computer completely and fresh install from my USB drive?
I have an old macbook pro 15 inch from around late 2005. It has a Core 2 Duo processor with 2.4 ghz, etc. and installed snow leopard on it awhile back. Yesterday after running software updates, the computer won't boot. what I could do to get the update de-installed?

i just bought a new uMBP 15 2.53 last night and i bought a Seagate 500GB 5400rpm HDD to replace the one on board. I installed the HDD and SnowLeopard install went through great but after install every time i boot up, it takes a long time on spinning gear. It eventually loads up but takes a while, I ran Repair Disk Permission and Verify disk and everything turns out fine. I even ran Apple hardware test on HDD and tests passes. I haven't installed 1.7 EFI Firmware since i've read that it doesn't work so well with third party HDD or doesn't work at all.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a 24" iMac (2.93 GHz Core 2 Duo variety) about 6 weeks ago and hooked up my Matrox DualHead2Go to find it wouldn't push the two external monitors to their 2x1680x1050 potential. Ok fine, I got an Arkview USB2 to DVI adapter and had one monitor attached to the inferior DVI port, the second connected to the Arkview adapter and both worked at 1680x1050. Today I updated the box to Snow Leopard to find that neither solution works any longer.
The Arkview adapter simply disappeared. The computer refuses to see it and the console seems to indicate that it tries to talk to the adapter but gets nothing back. My guess is something changed in the way SL talks to drivers which trashed that solution. Then I tried the Matrox again thinking 2880x900 is still better than 1680x1050 and while it sees the Matrox box and sees it as 2880x900, the second monitor never "lights up". Does anyone know of anything that actually works with SL that will let me attach the two external monitors?
I ran a disk check on my MacBook Pro which told me to run disk repair. Since this was my boot HD, I took out my Installation DVD, put it into the running system and started the installation file then selected that I wanted to reboot and start utilities. The system then rebooted, the "chime" came, and then, silence, gray screen with apple logo, nothing is happening. What do I need to do, to get further and repair my hard disk?

I have two Macs that run Snow Leopard. Lion looks to be quite different and offer great new features, particularly the app store. So, can a Mac become dual boot like a Linux can? I mean, may I co-install Lion side by side with Snow leopard rather than overwrite it? I have successfully done this operation on a Linux Ubuntu netbook with two different versions of Ubuntu, and a Windows 7/Ubuntu netbook. But I've never tried this on a Mac. Does a Mac OSX install allow options for how the user will install the new OS?

I have some important music software that I'm not 100% sure will work with Snow Leopard, but my understanding is that it's already ok for Universal Binary. So I had the thought that maybe I could put Tiger on the iMac and dual boot. I've never dealt with a dual-boot system before, other than a couple times when I played around with Classic Mode when I still had Jaguar and/or Panther.
