Windows On Mac :: BootCamp/XP On MacPro Advice?

Jul 8, 2010

I have a 2008 MacPro with dual 2.8's running the latest version of 10.5 (I have been reluctent to upgrade to 10.6). I also use Apples's magic mouse.

The only reason I still use my PC is for Quicken. I have tried trials of Mac replacements but they just didn't cut it for me and Essentials has had disappointing reviews. So I have a full copy of XP Pro, SP2 coming.

I was going to do a small partition of 20 or 30 gigs and install XP and Quicken using Boot Camp.

Any advice/comments form those with Mac/Windows experience?
My Mac is hard wired to my Airport so wireless internet is not an issue and I may not even activate internet for the windows partition. No need for Mac to PC file sharing either.

Will the Blue Tooth mouse work?
I have read SP3 can cause problems so stay with sp2?
Might it be better to have a HD just for windows?

Windows On Mac :: Finding Expert Advice - Using 7 (Bootcamp And Parallels)

Dec 26, 2009

I have a new 27" iMac with the i5 processor, Snow Leopard, and 8GB of Ram. Using the secondary display trick, I was able to successfully install Windows 7 (64 bit) with Bootcamp and it is working great. But I also have Parallels Desktop 5 (latest version) and am having troubles with it running Windows 7 from my Bootcamp partition.

I was able to get the virtual machine installed and Windows 7 will boot. However, it takes a LONG time to start the virtual machine and hard drive access is VERY sluggish. To be clear, Parallels itself loads fast but once I start the Windows 7 virtual machine, it takes 5-10 minutes to loads. But even after it loads, any time I do something to access the HD, it is very slow. For example, if I try to play a game, it'll take a long time to load the game but once it gets loaded, it runs great. So I know it's not a memory, CPU, or GPU issue. I have 4 GB or Ram dedicated to the virtual machine.

Now I thought I read something about Parallels having trouble with Windows 7 when using the Bootcamp partition - something about a HFS reading problem from a Bootcamp driving or something?

My Mac is booting into the 32bit kernel of Snow Leopard and the Windows 7 installation is 64 bit? Would that be causing a problem?

I also have Macfuse and Paragon NTFS installed on the Mac. Would those be causing a problem?

Specifically, what do you think could be causing the very slow hard drive access in my virtual machine? I wasn't able to find a solution at the Parallels website.

Mac Pro :: MacPro Raid And Bootcamp?

Feb 29, 2008

I'm putting together a workstation that primarily is going to be used for Windows development and I wanted to have as fast a disk subsystem as possible.

It doesn't seem to be BootCamp drivers available for the card that Apple sells, so I found this card instead:

[URL]
It has EFI firmware and is able to boot MacOSX from raid arrays. The only question is if it is able to boot stuff through Bios emulation.

Vista x64 is the primary target here, and SP1 actually has EFI booting support, so it might be possible to use this. However when I tried to install Vista x64 with SP1 integrated on the MacBook Air I wasn't even able to boot installer DVD because of EFI incompatibilities.

Anyone have any experiences with booting BootCamp on a MacPro with a raid card?

Would like to run WinXP pro on an SSD drive on a 8 core 3Ghz Mac pro.

Tried initially placing this drive on one of the two xtra SATA ports and mounting it where the extra CD drive goes, then discovered that Windows won't recognize and would need drivers/hacking etc.

Have decided to put it in regular bay 4 and use bootcamp. Do I need to install any special drivers to maximize the ability of Windows to access this drive?

Mac Pro :: MacPro & Bootcamp Win7 Performance Result

OS X :: Top Of Line MacPro - Windows 7 Gaming

Oct 18, 2009

I have been a PC user for 15 years and after using my friends new macpro via remote desktop, I think I really like the workflow a lot better. I do online marketing so efficiency is most important for me. The other really important thing, and the only thing that would prevent me from getting it, would be the fact that I LOVE windows gaming. I have read on the mac site that I can install a copy of windows alongside. First, will windows 7 be able to be installed? Second, my question mainly deals with the hardware of a mac... I'm not sure how the graphics suffer when trying to run windows games on high quality on mac hardware. Can anyone with experience tell me how this would work? If what I'm about to describe will work and is kosher, then I'm going to get an absolute top of the line Mac Pro

-Two 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
-32GB Memory
-4x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB (or would 1x ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB be better for gaming?)

Totak 13k So you think I could put windows 7 on there and play crysis (or any hot new windows game) on full graphics with that setup?

MacBook :: Advice For Vintage Gaming Under Windows On A MacBook?

Nov 1, 2009

I have a quick question relating to MacBook gaming: My old HD was way too small, so I bought a 320GB to replace it. I'll be doing a clean install soon. I also have an old copy of XP that I got ages ago and never used. I'm hoping the activation key still works...

Anyway, back in the day, I used to play Quake II and III a lot, as well as some other games. I think I still have the disks somewhere. I really liked Quake II, and would like to go through it again. Plus, I'm sure there are some other vintage (QII was '97!) games I could play.

My MacBook is the first Core 2 Duo model, with 2 GB of RAM and, I guess, the 950 integrated graphics. The PC I used to use for QII was a P2 450 MHz with a Voodoo GPU, so I *think* it should be no sweat for the Macbook, even with the crappy integrated graphics.... Heck, it seems some netbooks will run these old games.

Anyone done this? I don't want to go through the hassle of partitioning and installing XP if it's pointless.

Windows On Mac :: Sound In Windows Vista (64bit) Not Working Right Under BootCamp 3.0?

Sep 24, 2009

Last night I installed Windows Vista to run a game on here, but I got several issues. I already installed the drivers from the Snow Leopard DVD, but the problems still persist.

The issues are:

1. Sound is very very low and uneven. I have the volume all the way maxed, but the loudest it can go is less than half than the potential volume in Snow Leopard.

2. Headphones don't work. I've tried like 3 pairs of headphones and none of them work. When I plug them in, the sound still comes from the left speaker (I can barely hear the right speaker) on the laptop and not on the headphones. Also, the headphone jack is emitting a red light out of it.

3. The lights on the keyboard won't shut off. I used the F5 key to turn off the keyboard backlighting, and while it goes very dim they won't shut off.

I already tried the suggestions on this thread but none of those fixes work. I need help! Especially with the sound! Anything at all would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running a MacBook Pro 13" from June 2009, 2.26GHz Intel, 4GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce 9400M. I instlled a 64bit version of Windows Vista (OEM).
