Upgrade Of Mac Pro After Disappointment Of WWDC 12
Jun 12, 2012
After the major disappointment of the alleged upgrades to the Mac Pro this week, I am seeking opinion on what graphics card to install in my machine in an attempt to extend it's life - or any improvements that others may see fit.
SPECS:
Processor: 2 x 3 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
Memory: 10Gb 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM (Config: 2/2/2/2/1/1)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512Mb
Display: 30" DVI late 2005 (2560x 1600)
Before I get flamed for asking this, I realise that the Apple Store sells the ATI Radeon HD 5770 & 5870, but these cards are pretty old (whatever happened to Moore's Law?) and I had read on one of the Mac rumor / gossip sites that there would be a new graphics card potentially announced at WWDC 2012.If any stories are to be believed, it would appear that the end of '13 would be right for a major upgrade to the Mac Pro, and I am doing a fair bit of video these days. So I may as well spend some $$$ now to keep it chugging. I wouldn't mind flicking the 30" display and getting 2 x 27".

No matter what Apple releases tomorrow morning, there will be a sizable contingent that consider it a complete and utter failure. Most bitter of these will be the folks that perceive it as being "oh so close" to exactly what they wanted, but for some number of baffling Apple decisions to "cripple" it.
So I reckon I'd get a thread started now, just to save time.By my figuring, the possible points of dismay will be:-- Doesn't run "full OS X" and is therefore "just a big iPod Touch"-- No OLED screen (we'll just call those first two "The Troubles" in honor of Ireland)-- Lack of this or that port, or any at all outside of a headphone jack and a dock connector-- Fails to deliver on various rumored subscription services-- Can't run Final Cut Pro, Aperture, Pro Tools, or various processor intensive Big Apps-- Exclusive cell service via AT&T, aka "Oh God I hate them so much my head just exploded"-- Doesn't do "video chat" out of the box
-- And, of course, the perennial: the pricing is insane and relegates the thing to niche statusI'd put money on the first two, wouldn't be at all surprised to see the next three, have no idea about the rest. However, none of that distresses me, particularly, because I expect the all-over experience of the thing to be pretty compelling, and for it to be really, really good at what it's designed to do. I'll be pleasantly surprised if its priced aggressively with an eye towards really shaking up the industry.

Apple's redesigned Mac mini was released on Tuesday starting at $699, a $100 premium over the previous model -- a new price that one prominent Wall Street analyst said he believes is somewhat disappointing. Shaw Wu with Kaufman Bros. issued a note to investors noting that the Mac mini refresh is the most significant for the desktop hardware since it was first introduced in January of 2005. The new hardware added an HDMI port and now has an aluminum unibody exterior. But those additions weren't enough to offset some dissatisfaction with the new price for Wu.
"The only disappointment we have is the price point of $699 vs. the previous price of $599," Wu wrote. "For the new form factor, faster processor, faster graphics, HDMI port, and more HDD storage, (Apple) believes the $100 premium is justified. The original Mac mini cost $499 and over the past (5-and-a-half) years the price point has increased by $200, though the technology has gotten significantly better."..................

Any ideas on what might be coming along (if anything) for a Mac Pro update at WWDC? I'm going to get one but am trying to convince myself that I should wait another month until the conference.

Just curious is any one is using this build for every day use? I have a vacation coming up and thought I might install and try it out until my retail copy ships in Sept since I have some free time on my hands.

If there's no Hexacore at WDDC and no hint of an MP update - how significant do you think that would be for a 2010 MacPro.

New MacBook Air or no MacBook Air tomorrow I'm glad the waiting, hope and anticipation is soon coming to an end.
If we get a new MBA tomorrow ... woo hoo I'll be able to complete the final piece of the puzzle into planning my computer set up in which a new Air would fit perfectly
If no new MBA tomorrow, that's fine, so be it. I and I expect MANY others with move on with other plans, whether it be a 13" MBP, Sony Z whatever.
I'm sure many are tired of 'wondering and speculating'. I've given it until WWDC to see what develops with the Air.
After that it's too late. Waiting for a Fall or 2011 update is a joke (imo) for a product as incredible as the Air ... sure maybe they can't do the major overhaul they want to now because of tech limitations *but* they need to do something even if it's minor.
If not, then it's clear to me where the MacBook Air sits with the plans of Apple.
Here's to hoping for a new Air tomorrow !!

I've been sorta not-so-patiently awaiting getting a new unibody Macbook and holding off to see if they bump the low end to 2.13 and a 250GB HDD. I expect that it'll probably be a silent update on the site and not mentioned in the keynote even if they do update them.
If we don't hear anything tomorrow, do you think they may be quietly updated on Tuesday or does it mean the unibody Macbooks won't be updated for awhile?

Is it just me or does the screen in the background of this image not look like anyone that Apple currently offer:
Its hard to see because of the bokeh but the iMac is completely different and the 24" LED doesnt look like that either?

Does anybody know if today's product updates are pretty much it, or does Apple usually updates other products as well?

Has anyone experienced unclear, not sharp text, on a new MBP unibody? It feels like the text display is just 'not right'. My display is 9CA3. It uses the 9600m card. I used a 17" MBP with 1920x1200 resolution for 2 years, daily, with no complaints. After working for 1 day on the laptop my left eye is painful and both eyes are much more tired than normal. On the other hand, images and movies are clear and the colors are very impressive. But, how good is it to watch a movie when the eyes are too tired?

If you have a post-WWDC 7200 RPM HDD in a uMBP, do you have the click-beep problem as described here:

I was holding out to get a new 13" MBP, but obviously the refresh was... underwhelming. Should I snag a 13" MBP now, or wait until WWDC to see if something is announced?

I am kicking around between upgrading video card in my 1st gen Mac Pro (2 x 2.66 dual core, 8gb ram) from 7300 Gt to ati 4870 vs. upgrading to a newer system altogether...
Newer MP has 2 x 2.66 quad cores, 12 gb ram with the 4870 card.) What kind of improved performance might I really expect or even notice when using photoshop, light video editing, 3d graphics.
I have not included costs because I want to focus on the performance boosts sans cost for the purpose of this discussion.

Looking at getting a 13" MPB to replace my aging Macbook. I am aware of the imminent arrival of the next gen next year, but still seriously considering getting a current gen.
Anyway, I am debating between getting the 2.66GHz version with 4GB RAM and the 2.4GHz version with 8GB RAM. I already have a 500GB 7200rpm HDD which I will transplant into it. Some stage in the next year or so I will look into getting an SSD and optibay for it.
I know that if I get the faster processor I can upgrade the RAM at a later date, but is the faster processor worth the money, or would I be better spending on RAM?

Maybe this isn't the correct forum...I'm a newbie. Today, after checking and installing upgrades to my iMac OS X, I'm seeing a pop-up saying 'my existing messages need to be upgraded the first time I use Mail again." I'm not sure what it intends to do to my Mail messages and I'm slightly fearful because many of them are Outlook Express messages that were transferred from my old PC. Anyone gone ahead and done this 'mail upgrade' yet? and did you have any issues?

I went to BB and bought the upgrade for my MBP running Leopard but I decided I would try to install it on my Tiger running iMac almost possitive it would not work. It however worked and even installed faster (1/3 the time) of my MBP with more Ram and better processor. So it is definitely done

I am curious about the system requirement of Snow Leopard. Since the performance and speed are better on SL, I think Snow Leopard will consume a little bit more resource of our macs., although I know Snow Leopard is just only the refinement of the software.
So, my question is that WILL YOU UPGRADE YOUR RAM OF YOUR MAC?

I have a 2.66GHz Mac Pro (4-core) with 8GB RAM.
I also have a 2.80GHz MacBook Pro (mid-2009) with 4GB RAM.
My main programs are Flash, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop. I use these on both Macs.
I do a small amount of AfterEffects, UltraFractal, Bryce 6, and Cinema4D, but nothing *big*. I typically use these on the Mac Pro only.
I spend most of my time on the Mac Pro.

I am using a 733 mHz Power PC G4 running OS10.4.11. I also have OS 9.2.1 on a second internal hard drive to run PageMaker software (not available on OS10). Presently, while in OS10, I can click on the PageMaker software icon and PageMaker boots up in OS9 "Classic" on the OS10 desktop.
Upgrades for some of my other software require 10.5 & up, so I would like to upgrade to OS 10.5 Leopard but I'm not certain I can keep the easy Classic bootup described above.
I would also be interested in upgrading to a G5 desktop Mac, but believe I was told that I have the last model G4 that allows both operating systems (OS9 and OS10) to function.

Got the bug to upgrade my iMac G5, 10.4.11. Question: jump to 10.5 or big jump to 10.6? Is there a big difference between 10.5 and 10.6? I'm on a budget and looking for the best deal around--don't want to get ripped off. Refurbished iMac a good deal? Ebay? Apple store? Other? I do a lot with pics, writing, some graphics and I like speed and storage. There is a cost in replacing some software I already have (Disk Warrior 39) that I understand 10.6 doesn't accept. I think there's a place to verify what softwares are compatible. Right? What is it called?
