MacBook Pro :: Using Post-WWDC UMBP 7200 RPM HDD/Click Beep?

Jun 25, 2009

I know there is another thread, but I wanted to make a poll so people could easily guage the problem.

If you have a post-WWDC 7200 RPM HDD in a uMBP, do you have the click-beep problem as described here:

MacBook Pro :: Unclear Not Sharp Text - 15" Post - WWDC

Jun 17, 2009

Has anyone experienced unclear, not sharp text, on a new MBP unibody? It feels like the text display is just 'not right'. My display is 9CA3. It uses the 9600m card. I used a 17" MBP with 1920x1200 resolution for 2 years, daily, with no complaints. After working for 1 day on the laptop my left eye is painful and both eyes are much more tired than normal. On the other hand, images and movies are clear and the colors are very impressive. But, how good is it to watch a movie when the eyes are too tired?

MacBook Pro :: Using Mid-09 UMBP With Hitachi 7200 Drives?

Jan 21, 2010

I've read all the horror stories about how the mid-09 MBP hard drive firmware update and non-Apple 7200 RPM HDDs don't get along. Most of these seem to be related to the use of a SATA 3.0 drive (which shouldn't matter, since mechanical hard drives can't even make use of the full SATA 1.5, but I digress).

I'm about to buy a new Mac, and, even though the Macbook, which doesn't seem to have these problems, would suit my needs just fine (my camcorder is USB and my digital cameras both use CF), I might spring for the MBP anyway (likely to get the additional 2" of screen space on the low-end 15", which has the closest resolution to what I am used to on my outgoing T60).

Obviously, I could pay Apple to upgrade to one of their 7200 RPM drives, assuming I get the 15". But that seems silly, since I can buy, for less than $100 (i.e., half the upgrade cost from Apple, plus I keep the old drive), a Hitachi Travelstar 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0 drive. My questions are:

1) Has anybody successfully upgraded to such a drive (or its 320 GB little brother, which is otherwise speced the same) in a mid-2009 MBP?

2) If so, did you have to downgrade the firmware as suggested in these forums?

3) If so, did you have to "tweak" the drive in any fashion to make it work?

MacBook Pro :: 320gb 7200 RPM Drive Safe - Chirp / Beep?

Aug 18, 2009

Because of the re-introduction of the matte displays, I'm thinking about purchasing a 2.8ghz Macbook Pro. To make up for the 50$ of non-conformist-punishment-tax for the matte option I'd like to downgrade to the 320gb 7200 RPM drive. I've read about the issues with the 500gb drives - does the 320gb version also have the chirp / beep issue?

MacBook Pro :: Sudden Motion Sensor Causing Click And Beep?

Jul 10, 2009

Some hard drives have a motion sensor in them. These are NOT supposed to be in MacBook/Pro's as the Macs have its own Sudden Motion Sensor. If your MBP has both, they could be conflicting with each other. Try this simple test to see if the problem goes away: (if you're not adventurous, don't proceed)

[URL]

<<To disable the Sudden Motion Sensor:

Find the current status of Sudden Motion Sensor:

(log in as administrator)

1. From the Finder's Go menu, choose Utilities.
2. In the Utilities folder, open Terminal.
3. When the command line appears, type sudo pmset -g and press Return.
4. Type in the administrator password when prompted and hit Return. This command queries the computer for the current setting of the Sudden Motion Sensor, which you can determine by locating the ams entry (in Mac OS X 10.3) or the sms entry (in Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5) and looking to the right to determine its value. The default setting is "1" (turned on). 0 means off.

Disabling the Sudden Motion Sensor in Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5:

1. In Terminal, which should still be open from the previous step, you can disable the Sudden Motion Sensor by typing sudo pmset -a sms 0 and pressing Return (changing the setting to a zero disables the module).
2. Type your administrator password when you are prompted and press Return.
3. Type the sudo pmset -g command again to be sure that the setting has been applied.

Any changes that you make to the Sudden Motion Sensor setting remain in effect even after you restart the computer. If you choose to disable the Sudden Motion Sensor, Apple recommends that you re-enable it as soon as possible in order to take full advantage of the feature.

To re-enable the Sudden Motion Sensor:

Find the current status of Sudden Motion Sensor:

1. From the Finder's Go menu, choose Utilities.
2. In the Utilities folder, open Terminal.
3. When the command line appears, type sudo pmset -g and press Return. Type your administrator password when you are prompted and press Return. If you have the Sudden Motion Sensor turned off, the value of the ams entry (in Mac OS X 10.3) or sms entry (in Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5) will be a zero (0). >>

MacBook Pro :: 13 - No Click/beep Sound Associated - Hear Noises When It Loads Web Pages Applications

Sep 17, 2009

I got a 13" Unibody MBP, lower-end model, in July. Since then I've noticed various issues.

First of all, I have the common beachball problem. There's no click/beep sound associated with it like some have, and I've noticed clearing out my cache and occasional restarts have helped that. But in general things seem to be much slower than when I first got it... But of course I have many more programs installed, but very few are actually running.

I remember it being nearly completely silent when I first got it. Now I can hear noises when it loads web pages, applications, etc. that reminds me of the noise you'd head from an old desktop. Was I just imagining that it was silent before? The fans seem to run more often, as well.

Also, my audio jack is more and more often not detecting when something is plugged in to it. Usually putting it in to sleep and waking it back up helps.

Anyway, all of these together make me wonder if I should be paying a visit to the Apple store, and if so, what should I ask?

Mac Pro :: Replacing 320gb Baracuda 7200.11 Drives - Caviar Black / 7200.12?

Sep 20, 2010

I want to replace my 3 year old drives before it's too late.

I have about 200 gigs of data, split between a pair of Seagate Baracuda 7200rpm drives I bought 3 years ago.

I am thinking on going with a single 500 gig drive for my data, and I can't decide between a Caviar Black, or a Baracuda 7200.12.

I have read that the Caviar Black have incredible performance, , but only for the 1TB since it has 3 platters.

How do the 500gig models compare between WD and Seagate? I just don't have the need for more. My OS and Apps are on the SSD at 23 gigs, and all the rest of my work/personal files take up about 200 gigs.

Which is going to be better, the Black, or the Baracuda? 500 gig models only.

MacBook Air :: WWDC, Either Way Soon We'll Have Closure

Jun 6, 2010

New MacBook Air or no MacBook Air tomorrow I'm glad the waiting, hope and anticipation is soon coming to an end.

If we get a new MBA tomorrow ... woo hoo I'll be able to complete the final piece of the puzzle into planning my computer set up in which a new Air would fit perfectly

If no new MBA tomorrow, that's fine, so be it. I and I expect MANY others with move on with other plans, whether it be a 13" MBP, Sony Z whatever.

I'm sure many are tired of 'wondering and speculating'. I've given it until WWDC to see what develops with the Air.

After that it's too late. Waiting for a Fall or 2011 update is a joke (imo) for a product as incredible as the Air ... sure maybe they can't do the major overhaul they want to now because of tech limitations *but* they need to do something even if it's minor.

If not, then it's clear to me where the MacBook Air sits with the plans of Apple.

Here's to hoping for a new Air tomorrow !!

MacBook :: Finding WWDC Mb Update?

Jun 7, 2009

I've been sorta not-so-patiently awaiting getting a new unibody Macbook and holding off to see if they bump the low end to 2.13 and a 250GB HDD. I expect that it'll probably be a silent update on the site and not mentioned in the keynote even if they do update them.

If we don't hear anything tomorrow, do you think they may be quietly updated on Tuesday or does it mean the unibody Macbooks won't be updated for awhile?

MacBook Pro :: Beep After Restart?

Dec 15, 2010

I bought a 13 macbook pro a few weeks ago. My first mac, and I absolutely love it, but I noticed a strange thing occur a few times I restart or power up my mac. I came home after work and turned the computer on, I pressed the power button and the computer let out a loud, drawn out beep, and didnt turn on. I pressed teh button again and finally the start up sound went off, the disk drive spun, and everything ran smoothly. This has happened on more than one occasion, and just the other night, I installed an update and restarted the machine. As soon as the machine restarted, the beeping went off again, followed by the start up noise, followed by the grey loading screen. Anyone else familiar or experience this strange, loud, drawn out beep when they restart or try to turn their machine on? I'm just wondering if I need to be concerned or if this happens to others?

Upgrade Of Mac Pro After Disappointment Of WWDC 12

Jun 12, 2012

After the major disappointment of the alleged upgrades to the Mac Pro this week, I am seeking opinion on what graphics card to install in my machine in an attempt to extend it's life - or any improvements that others may see fit.

SPECS:
Processor: 2 x 3 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
Memory: 10Gb 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM (Config: 2/2/2/2/1/1)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512Mb
Display: 30" DVI late 2005 (2560x 1600)

Before I get flamed for asking this, I realise that the Apple Store sells the ATI Radeon HD 5770 & 5870, but these cards are pretty old (whatever happened to Moore's Law?) and I had read on one of the Mac rumor / gossip sites that there would be a new graphics card potentially announced at WWDC 2012.If any stories are to be believed, it would appear that the end of '13 would be right for a major upgrade to the Mac Pro, and I am doing a fair bit of video these days. So I may as well spend some $$$ now to keep it chugging. I wouldn't mind flicking the 30" display and getting 2 x 27".

Macbook Air 3 Beep Sounds When Turning Off

Mar 31, 2012

Macbook air, when turning it off, it started to make 3 beep sounds. The fans blow heavily and it keeps on 3 beeps and a pause and the 3 beeps again and again. Some pages say that when it is three beeps it is something with bad blocks, which means something is wrong with the RAM.

1) How can something suddenly go wrong with the RAM just turning it on.

2) How can you fix this yourself?, Instead of going to the Macstore Repair? I tried resetting the PRAM by (by pressing Cmd+Opt(ALT)+R+P) Nothing happens!

3) Saw on another page that it had been an issue for a MBP user and changing or taking out the ramblocks could fix the issue, anyone tried this with Macbook air?

MacBook Pro :: Pre-9/7 Versus Post-9/7

Aug 27, 2010

I'm at the point that I am finally needing to upgrade from my old 15" MBP (1,1), and will be jumping to a 13" MBP base model. I know Apple is currently running the promotion with the (up to) $199 MIR with an iPod purchase, but my trusty 160GB Classic is doing a marvelous job as is, so the iPod is relatively frivolous for me at the moment.

The question is whether or not there's a perk to buying now and just selling off an iPod brand new (aka bigger MBP discount), or if they run some different promotion after the current one lapses on the 7th that I might have an interest in. I'd scour my memory to recall if they do any other fall promotions (but it rarely remembers these sales, been nearly four years since I bought my last Mac), and searching has been fruitless (or I'm just using ill-formed queries). In any case, my purchase isn't terribly time-crucial (in the short term), but I'm certainly not waiting until Nov/Dec to pick one up. Does anyone recall if Apple traditionally does some other sort of promotion after the typical "rake in all the college students and give 'em free iPods to clean house" at the start of the school season?
