Mac Pro :: How Significant Would No Hexacore At WWDC Be
May 22, 2010If there's no Hexacore at WDDC and no hint of an MP update - how significant do you think that would be for a 2010 MacPro.

View 24 RepliesI dont call this for good, but it shows what is possible and that others work an Core i7-980X laptop while we get only C2D chips.
6 vs. 2 Cores for equal prices (sure not egual quality and it's very ugly) and Apple is still cool and thinks we are all happy with our mac's.
If this six core could run OSX, I would think about it. But I still hope for a 17"MBP with 4 cores.
I am looking to get a new or refurb MBA but as it will be my first experience with it am wondering if the HD is that poor a performer against the SSD (as it seems to be on a lot of the threads).
I would rather get the cheaper HD model (Rev B) but will it still stream BBC iplayer ok? I have a 1st gen mbp and have no problems with that but dont want MBA HD if it can't stream properly (I have good 10mb broadband).
My MacBook Pro gets hot. Right now I have Safari, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and text edit open but I'm not doing anything strenuous on any of them. My CPU temperature is 124 F. My fans are running at 4000rpm, but only because I'm using smcFanControl. When I use firefox it gets even hotter.
I bought my laptop in 2008. It's 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB 667 MHz SDRAM.My question is: this isn't normal, right? Is there anything I can do (other than getting it professionally looked at) to fix it?Also, on a probably unrelated note, the DVD player no longer burns or plays DVDs. Aside from buying a new one, is there anything I can do to fix it?
I have 3 Graphic Cards...all from Macs....but they dont have any significant marking or lables on them....only serial #.....how can i find out what kind or how fast they are?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought my first macbook a 13" white 1.83 ghz core 2 duo with 1gb ram and 60gb hard drive. Im trying to get myself over to the mac world so I bought this to see if I like it or not so far im loving it. My question is Will I see significant improvement in performance by upgraded the ram and hard drive?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I have a brand new MacBook Air (had it less than a week), and the Spotlight app shows up as using significant energy (hovering around 100) almost constantly. And it doesn't appear to be doing anything. Is that normal?

I'm a potential switcher and I'm still going back and forth between a top of the line Thinkpad T410 and MBP 15. A big reason I'm heavily considering the MBP is that I'm interested in using Mac OS, if for nothing better than it being different and new. I'm a long-time Windows guy, and I'm actually pretty impressed with Windows 7, but I have admired Mac OS from a distance. A recent line of thinking has been: I might as well get the MBP because it can run both Windows 7 and Mac OS, whereas the Thinkpad T410 can only run Windows 7. Since I've never really used Mac OS, my fear is that in a month, i'll miss Windows 7 (unlikely, but still a possibility...). In the event that I used MBP as primarily a Windows machine, I've heard that it runs hot and the power management support is poor at the moment. I plan on leaving the MBP plugged in as a desktop about 90% of the time.
So several questions:
1) Do any of you run Windows 7 through bootcamp for a significant amount of time on your Macbook Pro's?
2) Apart from poor battery management, how is Windows 7?
3) Just for reference, is there eventually going to be improved power management support and driver updates? (From what i googled, it seems like they missed their 2009 deadline, but I can't seem to find any word that they intend to eventually release updated drivers)
Any ideas on what might be coming along (if anything) for a Mac Pro update at WWDC? I'm going to get one but am trying to convince myself that I should wait another month until the conference.
View 24 Replies View RelatedJust curious is any one is using this build for every day use? I have a vacation coming up and thought I might install and try it out until my retail copy ships in Sept since I have some free time on my hands.

View 7 Replies View RelatedNew MacBook Air or no MacBook Air tomorrow I'm glad the waiting, hope and anticipation is soon coming to an end.
If we get a new MBA tomorrow ... woo hoo I'll be able to complete the final piece of the puzzle into planning my computer set up in which a new Air would fit perfectly
If no new MBA tomorrow, that's fine, so be it. I and I expect MANY others with move on with other plans, whether it be a 13" MBP, Sony Z whatever.
I'm sure many are tired of 'wondering and speculating'. I've given it until WWDC to see what develops with the Air.
After that it's too late. Waiting for a Fall or 2011 update is a joke (imo) for a product as incredible as the Air ... sure maybe they can't do the major overhaul they want to now because of tech limitations *but* they need to do something even if it's minor.
If not, then it's clear to me where the MacBook Air sits with the plans of Apple.
Here's to hoping for a new Air tomorrow !!
After the major disappointment of the alleged upgrades to the Mac Pro this week, I am seeking opinion on what graphics card to install in my machine in an attempt to extend it's life - or any improvements that others may see fit.
SPECS:
Processor: 2 x 3 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
Memory: 10Gb 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM (Config: 2/2/2/2/1/1)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512Mb
Display: 30" DVI late 2005 (2560x 1600)
Before I get flamed for asking this, I realise that the Apple Store sells the ATI Radeon HD 5770 & 5870, but these cards are pretty old (whatever happened to Moore's Law?) and I had read on one of the Mac rumor / gossip sites that there would be a new graphics card potentially announced at WWDC 2012.If any stories are to be believed, it would appear that the end of '13 would be right for a major upgrade to the Mac Pro, and I am doing a fair bit of video these days. So I may as well spend some $$$ now to keep it chugging. I wouldn't mind flicking the 30" display and getting 2 x 27".
Just being optimistic. When will they take this thing out of Beta?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been sorta not-so-patiently awaiting getting a new unibody Macbook and holding off to see if they bump the low end to 2.13 and a 250GB HDD. I expect that it'll probably be a silent update on the site and not mentioned in the keynote even if they do update them.
If we don't hear anything tomorrow, do you think they may be quietly updated on Tuesday or does it mean the unibody Macbooks won't be updated for awhile?
I'm buying a MBP and I was wondering if I should just go ahead and buy it now or wait till WWDC. What would you do?
View 24 Replies View RelatedIs it just me or does the screen in the background of this image not look like anyone that Apple currently offer:
Its hard to see because of the bokeh but the iMac is completely different and the 24" LED doesnt look like that either?
Does anybody know if today's product updates are pretty much it, or does Apple usually updates other products as well?
I'm looking at a great deal on a new 500gb time capsule
Has anyone experienced unclear, not sharp text, on a new MBP unibody? It feels like the text display is just 'not right'. My display is 9CA3. It uses the 9600m card. I used a 17" MBP with 1920x1200 resolution for 2 years, daily, with no complaints. After working for 1 day on the laptop my left eye is painful and both eyes are much more tired than normal. On the other hand, images and movies are clear and the colors are very impressive. But, how good is it to watch a movie when the eyes are too tired?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI know there is another thread, but I wanted to make a poll so people could easily guage the problem.
If you have a post-WWDC 7200 RPM HDD in a uMBP, do you have the click-beep problem as described here:

I was holding out to get a new 13" MBP, but obviously the refresh was... underwhelming. Should I snag a 13" MBP now, or wait until WWDC to see if something is announced?
