Software :: To Migrate From AFP To SMB ?

Feb 24, 2009

Is anyone aware of a way to migrate files/folders from an AFP share on a Windows 2003 server to an SMB share on the same server?

This has been a thorn in my side for almost a year. Nobody seems to have an answer, so I've tried my own thing:

In the AFP shares, which is legacy from OS9, the OSX 10.4 Macs can see the files properly. But, if they try to use them in an SMB share, to the same location on the same server, the special attributes of the files are gone. All of the files look like they are broken, etc.

I've tried to copy the files from the AFP share, through an OSX machine, to an SMB share on the same server and this does work, but the number of files, and levels of folders, seems to choke the copy and the speed is brutal, even on Gb. They have 800GB in 650K+ files. I tried the copy in the GUI and from the terminal. It would work for a while and then choke on various files for various reasons.

As I said, this has been an impossible task. There is no information on the Internets. Someone out there must have gone through this.

OS X :: How To Migrate From One Mac To Another?

Apr 13, 2010

In a few days, I will migrate from a three-year old MBP to a new one. I have done this many times on PCs, but this will be the first time I migrate on a Mac. How do I move programs, specifically Fusion and Things, from one Mac to another? Do I need to "reinstall"? Are they somehow registered to the hardware?

OS X :: How To Migrate Root User Having Only HD

Apr 7, 2009

I finally took the plunge and ordered a MacPro quad 2.66. I am waiting for it, and in the meantime I might sell my Dual g5 1.8. The problem is that like this I could not transfer the files from one mac to the other. Second problem is that I run my machines as root in order not to have to deal with any security question (I know, it is a bit reckless, but knowing nothing about unix I started like that with the G5 5 years ago...), and I see that everything is in hidden files/directories that cannot be accessed easily (I thought I could enter in the new machine as root and I could access the root user data on the other disk, but it doesn't work, I tried on another machine).

Is there any clean solution that allows to move one root user from one disk, installed on the Pro, to the boot disk. Otherwise, any unclean (i.e. scripts etc)?

OS X :: Possible To Migrate Selective Stuff From Old HD?

Apr 11, 2010

I recently purchased a new HD for my Macbook and installed it, along with a clean install of the OS. I put my old HD into an external enclosure and can connect it via USB. Is it possible to selectively migrate certain information from my old HD to the new? Let me be more specific here, I only want to migrate my Safari, Firefox, Mail, Stickies, iCal, iTunes, Adium, and MS Office settings, that's it, nothing else. Is this possible via Migration assistant? Do I have to use a 3rd party app? Is it possible at all?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Migrate From Clone Or TM?

Feb 10, 2012

I am doing a clean install of lion from the recovery HD, is it best to migrate the data back via TM back up, or clone? I don't have any programs that i don't a have disc for, and all i want to migrate is itunes, mail, and pic files etc. I have seen where migrating when you install is better than migrating later, so i want to be sure i have a clean clone, or back up, to migrate from. I also failed to write zero's over SL when i did a clean install for Lion, so it was not so clean. So i guess my question is just, clone, or TM back for migration?

MacBook Pro :: Easiest Way To Migrate To It?

Jun 23, 2012

Expecting my new MacBook Pro to arrive, looking for the easiest and fastest way to migrate from several PC's to my Mac. Does it make the most since to use a mac formated external disc and copy files from each pc to that then just connect that to my mac? Or should I use an NTFS formatted hard disc and copy from the pc and import to the mac and reformat the hard disc?

I was considering using the migration assistant but with several machines and location of my pcs, think this will take too much time. I do not need to migrate mail, or profiles. I am migrating iTunes library, quicken data, and movies and pictures, with some documents.

OS X Mavericks :: Do Not Migrate Applications

Jun 25, 2014

I have a late 2010 iMac on which I have been running 10.6.8 because of some legacy applications I needed for work. I have also been running Windows 7 Pro via Parallels Desktop. Over the past week I have developed network issues where the iMac can not get a proper IP address to connect to our local area network servers.  I have purchased an external firewire drive on which I have installed 10.9.2. When I start up with 10.9.2, the IP issues appear to be resolved. My questions about migration are:

1) Do I have to migrate all of my applications from my 10.6.8 user folder to my 10.9.2 user folder or can I run the applications from the 10.6.8 Applications folder?
2) What, if any, problems will I encounter if I do not migrate the applications? In order to keep working I'm still running 10.6.8 without access to our local servers, but I still have internet and email access. I just don't want to start using my applications under 10.9.2 until I know what to expect.

Applications :: Migration Assistant: Can't Migrate FROM 10.4.11

Sep 9, 2010

The MacBook has no firewire port, so to migrate it tells me to use Ethernet. I've done that before without too many problems, so no worry. But this time it tells me to insert the disk that came with the new machine into the old machine and install "DVD or CD Sharing Setup" software. I have inserted both the CDs that came with the new machine into the old, but cannot find anything that gives me that software. There is no "Disc 1."

I would rather migrate than to copy the user account over, but have done that successfully before, too. (fyi, once you copy a user account into the new Macintosh HD > Users folder, you then go into Users (in Sys Prefs) and add that exact name that is on the folder. It will tell you it already exists and say 'OK.')

Mac Pro :: Migrate All Files / Preferences To 09 Model

Sep 26, 2008

I've been shopping around for a new Mac Pro but with the likelihood of new models coming out in just a few months, I can't justify spending all of that money now. My new plan is to buy a refurb and then sell it when the new upgrades are out. I have two questions:

1) How well do Macs hold their value? Can I expect to get most of my money back if selling in a few months?
2) How hard is it to migrate all of my files, preferences, etc. from one Mac to another? I wouldn't want to spend ages transferring everything from the refurb to the '09 model.

Mac Pro :: Possible To Migrate RAID To Larger Drives?

Apr 2, 2009

I'm about to configure my 2006 MP with one of Apple's RAID cards using RAID5. I currently have 4x 750GB drives that I can use, but I can see needing more space in the not too distant future. When I do need more space, can I simply drop in a 2TB drive, let the RAID system reconfigure itself, and repeat this until I have all 4 drives in place? Is there a better or different way to do this? I know that if one of the drives is larger than the others, then only a drive space equivalent to the smaller drives will be used in RAID5. After addition of the fourth drive (per the above scheme), will the array then use the full 2TB of each drive?
