Mac Mini :: Migrate Files From One User To Another?
Apr 19, 2012
Apparently I have a bad file in my user profile. I am unable to use some of my Adobe software and they told me I have to create a new User profile. I created a new User account but how do I migrate my files from one user to another? Will I have to enter a password everytime I open a file if I do this?
I finally took the plunge and ordered a MacPro quad 2.66. I am waiting for it, and in the meantime I might sell my Dual g5 1.8. The problem is that like this I could not transfer the files from one mac to the other. Second problem is that I run my machines as root in order not to have to deal with any security question (I know, it is a bit reckless, but knowing nothing about unix I started like that with the G5 5 years ago...), and I see that everything is in hidden files/directories that cannot be accessed easily (I thought I could enter in the new machine as root and I could access the root user data on the other disk, but it doesn't work, I tried on another machine).
Is there any clean solution that allows to move one root user from one disk, installed on the Pro, to the boot disk. Otherwise, any unclean (i.e. scripts etc)?
I recently did a clean install and now I am attempting to migrate user data to the new install. I have a Mac Pro with four internal drives. OS X is on the boot drive, of course, and the user home folder I'd like to transfer is on another internal drive. (This is because I had moved all user directories from the boot drive to a separate internal drive in the Mac Pro. A consultant advised me to do this to increase performance.)
I thought I'd be able to use Migration Assistant to simply migrate the user to the new install, but it appears you can only use MA with a Time Machine back-up or a disk with OS X installed.
I recently migrated a MacBook Pro to a Mac mini - all went well enough. I realized that Final Cut Express HD is on a Power Mac G5 that I've retired. I have moved and can't seem to locate the install disc, so I'm wondering if it's possible to migrate just a single app over from the G5 to the mini.

trying to migrate from mac mini to iMac. Connected units via ethernet over verizon router. I get to select the files to transfer and matching codes. Hit continue to begin transfer and new iMac reboots every time.

I just bought an iMac and need to transfer files from my MacBook Pro. Question though, in the transfer are files permanently removed from the source computer or are the files copied from one computer to another with the source computer retaining the original files?
I've been shopping around for a new Mac Pro but with the likelihood of new models coming out in just a few months, I can't justify spending all of that money now. My new plan is to buy a refurb and then sell it when the new upgrades are out. I have two questions:
1) How well do Macs hold their value? Can I expect to get most of my money back if selling in a few months? 2) How hard is it to migrate all of my files, preferences, etc. from one Mac to another? I wouldn't want to spend ages transferring everything from the refurb to the '09 model.
I bought a new macbook pro and I'm planning the migration of files to the new machine. What is the best method, with the old pro having firewire and the new one having thunderbolt? I have a lot of files, so I want it to be as speedy as possible. Maybe the firewire to thunderbolt adapter?
i am trying to transfer one computer (Mac) says to "verify the passcode" and the other says it is waiting for the Mac to connect. It's been thinking 10 minutes. Is that normal?
I have recently bought a Mac Book Pro and I am trying to transfer my files from my old PC to the new Mac. I have put my files onto an external hard drive but when I plug it into my Mac is doesnt show on the desktop?

I have a few user accounts on my PC and I was looking to only transfer one of them to the new mac I plan to purchase in the next few weeks. Is this possible with migration assistant or are other methods necessary?
I have an iMac Intel Core2duo, 10.4.11 and I've just got a white macbook 10.6 which has a firewire slot. I have no idea how to transfer files from my iMac to the mb - can you help, please? I have not yet started the mb, in case I can use the setup assistant to migrate files. so I'd be glad if someone can tell me [a] HOW to transfer files, [b] HOW to transfer iPhoto, [c] HOW to transfer iTunes and if I need to buy a cable, then what to look for.
I did the entire Migrate Assistant process to transfer all my files and what not to my MacBook. Problem is that I did it on separate occasions and now I have several accounts. How can I transfer my files from the other accounts to my primary account and delete the other accounts?
I upgraded my MBP internal hard drive to a Samsung 1TB and it crashed for the 2nd time (will never buy another Samsung). So this time, I purchased a WD and migrated my system to the new drive sucessfully. I just wanted to see if anyone knew if the migrate function simply copies files or if it copys sectors of the hard drive. Basically I just want to know if Mac Migrate will copy the crap from the Samsung drive that might cause my new WD to act up - or if that's possible?
After you have moved all of you music from your pc to iTunes...how do you maintain the playlist. After 12 hours I transferred all of my music, but don't have the playlists preserved that I have on my PC
If I migrate my W7 machine to my Mac mini, will Windows make me reactivate the license? Is that even a big deal? If I use the ethernet cable option, will I need just the regular ethernet cable or a crossover cable?
After several years on the dark side (PC) i've finally decided to cross over into the light and get myself a Mac. I've had iPods for years and just ordered my iPhone 4 hence it seems to make sense. My main uses are: internet browsing, e-mail, personal finances, word processing, spreadsheets, photos and of course iTunes. A Mac Mini would seem to be a perfect fit.I'm off on holiday to the USA soon and i've been doing my sums:
UK: base model 650 UK: upgraded processor and 4GB memory cost is 850
USA: base model 508 (including sales tax) USA: same upgrade as above 690
So basically i can get the upgraded model in the USA for around the same money as the base model in the UK. The question i have is: Will i be able to buy the upgraded model (processor+memory) in an Apple store in the USA? Or can they order it in for me.I've been trying to find an e-mail address for an Apple store in Las Vegas so i can ask the question or even pre-order it but no luck.
New to the forum and already I need some help. Here's my tale of woe-I purchased a mac mini on eBay and it came with no disks and I don't have the user name or password and apparently now can't get them from the seller. I did a google search and have tried getting into the single user mode (Command + s) and I end up on a page with a black background that runs through prompts and ends with a message that says 'initalization complete.' I have tried typing in the commands suggested in my google search (sh/etc/rc) and it comes back with a 'file unknown' prompt.
I am trying to setup a new account for my employee's but when I log into the employee account the application folder is empty. What can I do to allow this employee account to have access to the programs on the computer?
I'm presently using the Toslink connection for my DAC to room speakers. Can anyone confirm that a second USB connected DAC for headphones would also be live? In short, run two DAC's simultaneously?
Old time Mac guy, they are the best computers, serviced Mac in the field, was even trained on Macs first unix based server, 1998. Servers currently servicing are Sun, HP, Dell, EMC and a few other odds and ends. Just some history. The question, what is the password to become a "super user" SU in the terminal session? OS is 10.4
Okay, so I left my two year olds alone for a minute playing the "alphabet game" on my Mac Mini. They only had the keyboard, no mouse but managed to muck up my display leaving me a bit frustrated. The screen is now too large for my Samsung display. The only way to see everything (dock, top bar, etc) is to move my mouse arrow to the end of my display and see it roll back onto the page. I've checked the settings there and they are fine. The MacBook Pro plugs right in and is proper resolution. So I then wondered if another account on the Mac Mini would do the same thing. I logged out of my Admin account and into another and everything looks just dandy. I log back into my Admin account and it's too large and blurry again. The resolution is set correct at 1920x1080 at 60 Hz. Â
What button did they push on my keyboard that would do this and how do I get it back?
