Software :: IMac Update 10.2.8 To 10.4
Jul 26, 2008
I have an iMac PC G4, memory 512, 800 MHz, Bus 100, running 10.2.8. I want to upgrade directly to 10.4 and then use the Apple site to get it to 10.4.11. Is there an option to archive, so that only the os will be changed and all the other setting, users, etc. can remain unchanged? After the installation should I update any other programs or will they run as it (ex:Photoshop 4, etc.) I also have os 9.2.2 on this computer. If I upgrade to 10.4 will I lose it? or any of the software and files on that system? If I have to reinstall 9.2.2, is there an archive for it?

The MacBooks are rumored to be switching to Nehalem late this year. Do you think the iMac will be updated with them?
I can't really imagine, the Laptops being Nehalem and the iMac not.
Any thoughts?

Since the positive/negative ratings on the front page are always more tilted towards negative, rate the iMac update by stars here. Feel free to add a comment explaining your rating, or what could've made it better.

I've had some disk errors (Missing thread record) on the 2GB drive in my Imac i7. After repairing with Diskwarrior the problem reoccurred after a few days.
I did bad block test and everything was OK, so I was thinking it maybe was the OS (10.6.2) causing the error.
I DL the 10.6.2 combo update,to do a reinstall but the installer won't let me install "Mac OS X Update Combined can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update" -any suggestions?

I have an old white iMac G5. I am trying to restore the system and potentially sell it. I don't have the original discs for the machine, but do have the OS X Leopard disc. I have gone through and reinstalled Leopard to wipe the system. Then I go into my software update to make sure the system is updated properly and there is an update for 10.5.8 it says "Mac OS X Update Combined." In the "About this Mac" it says I am running version 10.5.1. I downloaded the update, but when it restarts to finish the process it will never finish and I have to turn the computer off using the power button on the back. Anyway I can get this system fully updated to be able to sell it?

I read somewhere that 10.5.8, Ishould I get rid of Java to protect against FlashBack... would that have a big impact on my online experience? Would updating to a more secure OS be a better idea?

Original thread:http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=174605I just wanted to update readers on how it went (so far)So I was finally given the graphite iMac I found in the tech room (for free ).Good news:We booted it up and it ran ok, it even had OS X on it.It turned out to be the 13gig HD version, which I belive to be the first Graphite iMac (well one can?t have all the luck )Bad news:They didn?t have the keyboard and mouse any more (I borrowed someones at the office to check it out).
I only have wireless keyboard and mice, so I was forced to park it in the basement until I can get hold of some USB stuff.

we all know the iMac is in need of refreshing and that the refresh will almost certainly be this quarter Even though the laptops and the new cinema display have been updated to look a lot more like the iMac with their aluminum and glass stylings does anyone here think we'll see an update to the design?

Today I tried to sell the iMac G3 I bought from the Traders' Market near my college (I was hoping the price would be higher than when I bought it, since I had upgraded it from the crappy Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X 10.3.9 by then). However, the guy at the desk said they don't accept Macs. I asked why the Mac I bought came from there. He told me that someone just left it outside the store, or in other words, abandoned it. They just brought it in and put a price tag on it, I bought it for the $125 price they slapped onto it (they must've not known ANYTHING about Macs!) and fixed it up a bit (well, I now put Mac OS X 10.4.11 on it.)Anyways, I am still going to try and sell it and get a G4 eMac (hopefully I can sell it for $120 since it now has Tiger, and I bought it with bumped-up memory anyways, 576 MB to be exact). But until then, I might as well continue tinkering around with it.

I am asking this a possible question and not a legal question.I have an Intel iMac running Tiger and an Intel MBP running leopard. I was told by a friend that I could use my Leopard restore disks to update the iMac so they both were running leopard. I am unsure if this will actually work since they two different computers running two different OSs. The reason I am curious about this because I catching the SL bug and want to tinker with it a little bit once it come out and I do not want to buy the Box set since I already purchased iLife 09 for my MBP and I use Microsoft Office for Mac plus it seems like it will be around $170. I do not want to update my MBP because it is what I user for school and work along with being the thing I take with me where every I go.

I've got a iMac power pc G3, running OS 9.2.1 w/ 64MB ram. It runs great and is actually a treat to play with and remember the good old days? Anyway, I'm trying to set it up for an elderly friend of mine who is learning to drive a computer for the 1st time on a Mac She would like to use it for yahoo mail, web surfing, iTunes, and hopefully .AVI movies. 1.will this thing run OSX Tiger or something close? If so, what installer disk should I get hold of and where?2.if not OSX, what is optimal system 9?3.what is the optimal browser for this machine?

Are you able to update one computer (iMac) and send to either another imac or laptop? E.g. Installed update 10.6.3 on my iMac, and I able to use that same update on my MBP without having to download it again? Like using the update file I downloaded and installed on my mac and sending (via say bluetooth) to laptop and installing?

Does anybody have any information on when Apple are going to launch a PROPERLY upgraded iMac? They've just announced a new version with some upgraded integrated graphics, more memory and storage, but when are we going to see an iMac with Quad-Core processing and Blue-Ray? Let's face it, this is what everyone is waiting/hoping for. I've been waiting to buy a new 24" iMac for over a year - I've even got the money waiting in the bank! However I'm not going to buy until they properly refresh the range. We've seen the laptop range refreshed and the Mac Pro range upgraded, but they just seem to be dithering about a bit with the iMac. Why? I actually looked at just going for a Mac Pro instead of waiting, but they are so much more expensive than an iMac I can't justify it. C'mon Apple - I love your product but am waiting for the REAL upgrade!

How is the new update working with your PPC macs? Did your update go smoothly and are you seeing any performance gains? I am very curious because I hear intel mac users are having a slew of problems but I would like to hear from the PPC side of the fence.
I am too nervous to update right now as I have too much critical data I need to back up first and wont be able to update today.

I've been considering buying a MBP for a while now but have ultimately decided to wait until the next refresh, which i presume will be in time for christmas or very early 2010?Reason being I was bought a 24" iMac for my birthday in August and am obviously about to be slightly stung by the updated version of the all in one being released a mere 2 months or so later, so decided to wait till the next MBP update before buying my first notebook to maximize its longevity (hopefully). My question though is, as MBP and iMac specs are currently relatively similar and both are considered the slightly more high end "everyday consumer option" (low end being MacBook and Mac Mini)...Could the spec of the updated iMac be all but the same as the new MBP when they are released? i know we as consumers can never "know" but it could be logical to assume if iMac's get quad core and blu-ray then MBP could be in for similar treatment.

I have a 10yr old G3 iMac, running X.3.9 and Classic, have 192mb memory and 105GB free space on HD. My question is what is the latest OS version I can install. I know I will need to add more memory but thats not a problem. Machine runs good, sometime slow with a lot of beachballs but dosen't freeze up or crash. Need newer OS so I can download some files I want and plan to get into the 21 century early next year with a new machine, if they release a new generation of the iMac or come out with a notebook with a numerical keyboard. Of course depending on the price of the software I may just bite the bullet and hold on to what I have till spring.

When given a video card update (esp from using windows) it almost always improves the video card. Apple releases the flicker fix update and I don't have a flicker issue. No screen issues at all really.
I feel like it's Russian roulette. Update or not? I know some people will say don't fix what ain't broke, but what exactly is IN the fix? Is it exclusively for the flicker issue or does it update/upgrade other aspects on the card? Mine has the ATI card in it.

Long story, but basically I got an "invalid sibling error" on my intel IMac and was told the best fix was to zero the HD and reinstall. I did this and got Leopard running. Now it hangs while I try to update to 5.10.8. I downloaded the combo update from Apple after it failing through system update.
I'm not sure what the issue could be. I've verified the disk, checked it's smart status is ok and run the hardware test from the install disk.
