View 1 Repliesdownloaded the newsest updates from Apple and now my computer won't start up. Goes to long in screen and won't let you type in pass word. Spinning Beach Ball of Death comes up and never stops.
I just keep shutting it down ( push off button on the back until it shuts off) and trying to start it again. Some times it will let you get a little farther, but always after 2-3 minutes it goes to SBBOD.
Lates thing I did was push option+command+S when I turned it back on and now screen is black and has a bunch of code. Been at this stage for 30 minutes now. It is not pluged into the internet at the moment.
Info:
iMac, OS X but not sure what version.
My Mid 2011 iMac 27" i7 will no longer start after the latest EFI update. I decided to perform some system updated on my iMac and after installing 10.7.3, I rechecked and it found the EFI update and one other update. They were both pretty small (the largest was 3.6MB), so I decided to proceed prior to getting back to business with my system. After downloading the updates (took about 5 seconds), the machine proceeded to restart. There was a loud beep prior to the system restart chime after which it went to the grey-white apple startup screen with the spinning wheel. And it stayed there. After 35 minutes with no discernable progress, I decided something must be wrong. This system normally takes about 30 seconds to boot from a cold state (it's running on an OWC SSD) or maybe a minute after updates. So I held the power button to reboot. But it keeps going to the same state. I tried to reboot to a different internal drive holding the option key, but the same thing happens.
System Specs:
iMac 27" i7 3.4 Ghz (mid 2011) 12G Ram
Internal 1TB Apple HD
Internal OWC SSD 240G (main startup drive)
1. How do I recover from this?
2. Is anyone else running into this problem?
3. How long do the EFI updates normally take?
4. Shouldn't there be some sort of "progress bar" to indicate something is going on during this process? Or, if not, then perhaps a "WARNING!! This process will take up to two hours, during which you will receive no discernable feedback. Do not interrupt the process until more than 24 hours have passed with the spinning ball."
P.S. I think this is my last iMac EFI update. After my last iMac received an EFI update (2009 model 24" iMac), it became ultra-flakey and started corrupting HD's. It never worked the same after that. This machine was working PERFECTLY before the update.

The MacBooks are rumored to be switching to Nehalem late this year. Do you think the iMac will be updated with them?
I can't really imagine, the Laptops being Nehalem and the iMac not.
Any thoughts?
Since the positive/negative ratings on the front page are always more tilted towards negative, rate the iMac update by stars here. Feel free to add a comment explaining your rating, or what could've made it better.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've had an iMac for 8 months now, and I have recently bought a new router as my previous one died after 3 years of service and so I got a new one from BT (I'm in the UK). The new router works with 3 laptops, an iPhone, and two desktop PCs - but not with my iMac.
It intermittently picks up the signal and when it does finally connect, says the router is not connected to the internet - despite my laptop and iPhone being on the same desk and connecting.
According to 2 articles posted today on macnn.com and appleinsider.com new iMacs will probably appear in March or June at the latest.

But other than that, I have zero sound on the computer. I can't play my iTunes, nor can I watch youtube videos. Zip. Nada. No sound.
View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday Apple released Safari 5.0.1 and Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0, but Software Update on my Mac makes me able to download only the first one (Safari 5.0.1) - which I did. Why can't it find the Multi-Touch Trackpad Update?
- My MacBook is fine (it's 13-inch, Mid 2009).
- My OS is fine (Mac OS X v10.6.4).
Sure, I can download it manually, BUT it makes me really annoyed if something on my Mac works not as good as it should.
I have problems since applying the latest security Update 2009-001 and Java 10.5 Update 3, I have 10.5.6 on the new unibody 2.4ghz and have completely lost the ability to connect to my wireless access point which is an apple airport extreme base station.
I can sometimes se the base station but cannot connect to it and sometimes cannot see it at all. I have three other apple computers at home all less then a year old running the same build of 10.5.6 but have not updated them and they all are fine.
This one was perfect untill I applied the update.
The machine I am having problems with is partitioned with windows 7 beta on it which has no problems connecting to the base station, which indicates that its not a hardware problem but more then likely the update which is causing the problem.
Is there a way to uninstall the last update or delete it? Any one with a similar problem or know how I can fix it, I have googled but cannot seem to find anyone with similar problems.

I've had some disk errors (Missing thread record) on the 2GB drive in my Imac i7. After repairing with Diskwarrior the problem reoccurred after a few days.
I did bad block test and everything was OK, so I was thinking it maybe was the OS (10.6.2) causing the error.
I DL the 10.6.2 combo update,to do a reinstall but the installer won't let me install "Mac OS X Update Combined can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update" -any suggestions?
I just downloaded the latest update to Parallels. I shut down Parallels before running the update, and I even did a reboot of the computer. And yet every time I run the update program it keeps telling me to "shut down these running and suspended virtual machines" and refers to "My Boot Camp"Like I said, I rebooted the computer first. There are no virtual machines running. Zero, zilch, nada. So why in the ******* is Parallels telling me that there is? "My Boot Camp" isn't even a VM that I use
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Macbook pro with PGP whole disk encryption and Snow Leopard and ran the latest OSX 10.6.5 update. During the reboot the mac would just hang at the gray screen indefinitely. I rebooted using the "cmd + S" key sequence and saw that the error where it was hanging stated "Still waiting for root device". Attempting to repair the hard drive using Disk utility off of the install CD failed, as well as attempts to rebuild the drive using Disk Warrior 4.2. I even went to a local Apple Store and the techs there didn't have a solution other than doing a re-install of OSX. At this point I was ready to cut my losses and erase the drive and do a fresh install. I'M GLAD I DIDN'T. I don't know why I didn't do this first but I went to PGP's website to download their recovery CD to try it and found an article that stated there was a known issue with PGP WDE and the latest 10.6.5 update. I followed the recovery procedures laid out here: [URL:...] and was able to boot up just fine.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI decided to install all the latest updates last night on my Macbook and it seems now that the fan is constantly on... I think the latest update was 10.5 (anyway whatever the latest one was). I have gone into the activity app and everything seems to be fine there, in fact the top thing running was the activity app itself. I am used to the fan cutting in when I am watching a movie etc but something seems to be up.

Moderator Note: Thread closed at request of original poster, who has made another post with more detail on this issue here. Warning: All working fine the last month until security update 3-18-08 totally wrecked system - cannot boot - recommend cloning to separate disk before attempting. Never had this occur with mac update. Many times with Windows.

View 2 Replies View RelatedRan the update from the Apple Update, which included iLife update and some other minor updates to the airport. White Macbook 13", Leopard 10.5.6.
I'm selling my macbook pro, going to do a fresh format before that. But my mac install disk comes with 10.5.6
I want to update it to latest 10.5.8, in order to do that I need to log in an account to perform the update but for that the buyer will not experience the leopard first start up music. How can I update it without creating an account so the buyer can feel like getting a first hand on it?
I've got a Macbook with with Leopard v10.5-something installed. When I installed the latest update and was at about 25% done with the "writing"-part it suddenly failed. I got a message prompting to restart (I think it said that it was something wrong with the source from which it was writing), when I restart the computer I get another message promting me to restart. My backup is a few months old, so I wonder if there is some way around my problem?

View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday, iTunes installed an update to 10.6.3, and since then freezes less than a minute after launch. The beachball just spins and iTunes is completely unresponsive. It is usually downloading a new podcast at the time, but that is simply because that's the first thing iTunes does if I'm not syncing.
I tried restarting. I tried restarting in Safe Mode. I tried restarting without anything connected to any ports. I tried uninstalling iTunes, restarting, installing a new download from apple website, and restarting again.
I'm not sure what to do next..Everything was working fine up the the moment the upgrade finished.

Software Update just prompted me with an update for iTunes and a Security Update without thinking about it since they are apple updates I did them. After restarting every single application that utilizes a SSL certificate from Keychain is prompting me saying that the SSL Certificate has an invalid issuer. This includes SSL certificates from Apple themselves ( mobile me, apple.com etc.. ). Anyone else having this issue or is it just my computer being massively screwy?
