View 1 RepliesIs there a way to make the Boot Camp menu the default boot screen, as opposed to holding Alt? This is the latest SL release, if that matters.
I know this is possible in some manner, our networked iMacs all do it; they start up and give the option to boot OS X or Windows, with a countdown to boot the default OS. I'd just like the same thing to happen on my MBP.
I was trying to delete partitions on my hard drive to get it ready for a clean Yosemite install. All of a sudden the screen went grey and after a considerable amount of time I turned off the MacBook Air and then turned it back on. A grey screen with a folder and '?' showed up. I don't have much experience with Macs, but I know enough that something happened to the Boot files. I don't have any other Macs. Is there a way to make a bootable drive on a PC? I have saved HD images on a portable hard drive along with time machine backup...I was running Lion OS
Info:
MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.4)
I have installed Windows XP, Windows 7, Mac OS X 10.5.7 and ubuntu all on my mac mini. At the moment it automatically boots into machintosh unless I hold down the "option" key and select a diffrent volume from the boot menu. What I would like to do is instead of booting straight into mac os x id like it to open the boot menu first so I can select the Volume and OS.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I am contemplating getting an SSD as my boot drive. I read a huge article on anandtech talking about how SSD degradation works. So I would only want the OS and Applications I have to be on the SSD. I know how to change my downloads to go to a different drive and set up my iTunes music folder somewhere else too. However, how could I make the desktop be on a drive in bay 2? Or photo booth pictures to go to the drive in bay 2? Or an iPhone backup? Basically, how can I get everything to not go on the SSD besides just the necessary files for the OS and my applications? I just don't want a bunch of random files being written to the SSD.

I got tired of that and decided to format my hard drive and reinstall osx. I had to do it 3 times before it worked. Then I installed the updates and BANG! New problem! Now it was booting for 6 minutes before I see the desktop.
how to make a boot camp installation with three partitions?
I mean one for mac, one for windows and one for data to be shared between the OS's? When I try to create 3 partitions on leopard installation, when I start the boot camp assistant, it doesn't work. Or when I create an extra partition inside windows, mac is not able to see it.
Recently my macbook slowed down during it's initial boot process. It now takes 42 seconds just for the apple logo to appear. Finally after 1:20 I'm at the desktop. I can certainly live with this but am just curious as to why all of a sudden the initial process has basically doubled (getting to the apple logo).

On pressing the power button on the back of my brand new iMac i5 (Bought in store on Nov 21st), the white screen appears after 5-7 seconds and then the boot time is incredibly fast since I have an SSD installed. But I'm disturbed now with the fact that the white screen takes such a long time and I was wondering if anyone else had a similar issue?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Mini 9 that needs to have ubuntu installed and I'm using a Mac Pro. Following the instructions here but stuck at the end. If someone could look at my Command and tell me what syntax I need. I have successfully created the disk image on my Desktop (pic 1) but for some reason can't locate it? I have tried numerous ways (pic 2 and 3).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI noticed my iMac (Late 2009 C2D) was running a bit sluggish over the last month so I asked my Mac enthusiast buddy what I could do to help improve performance. He suggested that I use OnyX to do some system cleaning and repair permissions. I did the repair permissions (only two errors found) then headed to the cleanup section of the app.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make an OS X Lion boot disc. A failed Windows 8 Bootcamp install killed my Mac, but luckily I had a Time Machine backup which was accessible via the Recovery Disk. However, I would still like to have a boot disc handy in case something like this happens again and the Recovery Disk is somehow corrupted.
I Googled(among other things) how to make one, and the instructions seem fairly simple. Only, I can't find a Mac OS X Lion Installer anywhere. When I bought my refurbished iMac from Apple, OS X Lion was already on it. Since I didn't download it from the App Store it seems I don't have the Lion Installer to make a boot disc... Anything I can do (besides wasting $30 to redownload Lion from the App Store for the file) ?

I am wondering if there is a way to have my iMac boot up in OS/X by default and if I want to use windows then use the hold down option method. So when I also come out of windows that it will go to OS/X without having to hold down the option key while I boot. Is this possible? If so how do I configure it?

Steps I Have Taken:
1) Repaired Disk Permissions
2) Repaired Disk
3) Deleted huge files or moved them to an external drive (huge as in >6gb)
Is there anything for me to do? I've searched these forums and some other ones but really haven't found anything.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm on a 2008 model Mac Pro 8-core system for work. For whatever reason it doesn't have a recovery partition. I read that if I don't have a recovery partition, I can't make a recovery USB bootable drive....so how do I make one? And no, I cannot reinstall the OS on here, that would be beyond detrimental to what's going on here. (too many details to get into)
Alternatively, can I make one with my 10.8.5 MacbookPro at home and run it here on my Lion system?

Yesterday my screen (30" Apple Cinema) started showing symptoms of graphics card failure, jagged lines across the screen. I rebooted my Mac Pro and it was gone. Then it happened again an hour later, this time the machine didn't boot, I get the Apple logo, and then it hangs up and the screen is shifted to left (I get apple logo on left side of the monitor instead of the middle) and jagged lines all over.
So the first thing I tested was using Target Disk Mode, it works. I can access my Mac Pro's internal HD's by TDM from my MacBook Pro. Then I tested single user mode, it does boot, I can't read what's written since the screen is shifted to left, but if I type (without seeing) reboot and hit enter, it reboots. So I assume the single user mode is working.
What else can I try to 100% make sure it's my graphics card that failed and everything else is ok with Mac Pro? I already ordered a graphics card replacement but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives. It won't boot from Apple Startup DVD either. Same thing happens, gray logo then kernel panic with jagged lines all across the shifted screen.
I have a 2 week old iMac 27", i7, 2tb Hard Drive, 16gb RM
In the second week the boot up times became very slow.
I would turn the machine on and get the chime within 5 seconds or so.
Then just a black/blank screen.
Eventually after about 10mins I would get a white screen then it would boot up normally.
Now the machine just doesn't get to the white screen. So I get the chime and then just darkness. It does sound like the machine is on (usual quiet imac whirring).
I've tried various key commands when I turn the machine on including pressing C with the install disk in the dvd drive and the alt, control, P, R pram reset.
I've also tried unplugging all the cables, leaving the machine for a minute and switching back on. I did manage to perform the PRAM reset once. I reset the machine and it booted fine.
But now when I switch it on just darkness.
I've called after sales and will try to get the machine replaced but in the meantime is there anything I could try that might make the machine work? I need to do a remix this weekend (deadline Monday) so really need to get it working.
