Mac Pro :: Unable To Boot / Kernel Panic At Boot And Graphics Card Failure

Mar 9, 2008

Yesterday my screen (30" Apple Cinema) started showing symptoms of graphics card failure, jagged lines across the screen. I rebooted my Mac Pro and it was gone. Then it happened again an hour later, this time the machine didn't boot, I get the Apple logo, and then it hangs up and the screen is shifted to left (I get apple logo on left side of the monitor instead of the middle) and jagged lines all over.

So the first thing I tested was using Target Disk Mode, it works. I can access my Mac Pro's internal HD's by TDM from my MacBook Pro. Then I tested single user mode, it does boot, I can't read what's written since the screen is shifted to left, but if I type (without seeing) reboot and hit enter, it reboots. So I assume the single user mode is working.

What else can I try to 100% make sure it's my graphics card that failed and everything else is ok with Mac Pro? I already ordered a graphics card replacement but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives. It won't boot from Apple Startup DVD either. Same thing happens, gray logo then kernel panic with jagged lines all across the shifted screen.

OS X :: Kernel Panic At Startup - Unable To Boot

Apr 21, 2010

Yesterday I was helping someone getting to know their MacBook Pro (early 2008, Intel core 2 duo 2.4GHz, Mac OS X 10.5.2). I installed Perian and Flip4Mac and Firefox 3.6. I also checked for updates because she's on a very old version. I tried downloading the updates, but because we had a very bad internet connection I stopped the download quite early on and told her to do it at home. However after I left she tried to shut down the computer but it hanged. She manually shut it down using the power button. When she tried to turn it on again she got a kernel panic message saying she should reboot. This however didn't work.

Now I've tried all sorts of things. I've removed Perian and Flip4Mac manually. I did a disk verification (all was well) and a permissions verification and repair. I tried booting in safe mode (still won't boot) clearing the SMC and resetting PRAM, none of it worked. I just wanted to check here first before either taking it to an Apple store or reinstalling Mac OS X. I've read on forums about hardware failing (RAM mostly). No idea if that's the case. I tried a hardware test, but I don't have her DVDs and used my own with version 10.5.5. The Standard test said it was all ok, but the extended test seemed to hang. I could ask for her own DVDs which I will need anyway if I'm going to reinstall Mac OS X.

Some details of the kernel panic:
The error code is: 0x000000010
Apart from that it says the following:
Backtrace terminated-invalid frame pointer 0
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.driver.AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement(76.2.0)@0x2e63c000->0x2e65afff
And later on it says: Mac OS version: Not yet set.

And of course it shows some more info with lots of hex codes, I can type them out for you if you like, but I read elsewhere that the error message is usually not very useful. Would you recommend going to an Apple store to see if the RAM is faulty? Or do a reinstall of Mac OS X?

OS X :: Cannot Boot From Any Media - Kernel Panic On Startup

Nov 16, 2009

I moved over to an IMac from windows about 2 years ago and have never had any issues, until now. Whenever I boot my IMac I get a 'kernel panic' message (grey screen with 'you need to restart your computer in 4 languages). I cannot boot from my Mac HD, nor from a bootable superduper backup external HD, nor from my orginal SL or Leopard disk. All go into the kernel panic. I can however boot from my bootcamp Windows Vista partition. Tried booting into safe mode also does not work and gives the kernel panic screen. I have run both the standard and extended hardware tests and both have no errors. I booted in single user mode (that still works)and done a fcsk and unmount and both are without errors. Also done RAM flash. In single user modei can not find a PanicReporter directory or panic log. Cannot even install a fresh SL copy as my DVD wont boot either.

OS X :: IMac Crashing - Kernel Panic On Boot Up

Dec 10, 2009

Recently my 2-year old iMac (20inch (2Ghz, 320GB, 4GB RAM, OSX Leopard) has been crashing every day. The way to temporally "fix" the kernel panic is to restart the machine and boot into the instal disc, and run the disk utility (repair permissions, then repair disk). If I do not run the disk utility daily, the computer will begin crashing again over and over. Below you'll find the the crash data (which is always the same):

Interval Since Last Panic Report: 0 sec
Panics Since Last Report: 1

I honesty don't know what to do to stop the crashing (other than runing disk utility every day). This is never happened before now.

Intel Mac :: Kernel Panic At Boot And Sometimes During Runtime?

Apr 23, 2012

Ever since I've got this iMac on the office, I've got the occasional kernel panics. At first they seemed to redeem themselfs during runtime, but for a while now, they seem to pop up at boot. And I mean, even not getting the Apple logo and it already freezes. I seem to be having this problem only in a frequency of say... once in two months or so?

Today I got it again and it even occured two times in a row, third time the system booted up. I would like to know whats up, I figure this must be a hardware issue since the system doesn't even load up. I'm a bit worried about sending this machine for it's warranty, since I won't have a machine for like 3 weeks until it gets back...

Here's the kernel panic:

Software :: Kernel Panic At Bootup / Can't Boot From Install Disk

Sep 24, 2009

I've got a Powermac G5 desktop. I recently purchased a used keyboard for it off of Ebay. The computer was working fine with just a mouse. Shortly after the keyboard was plugged in, I got a kernel panic, and had to restart. I restarted, and immediately got a message saying "you need to restart your computer", and followed by another kernel panic.

Now, I get a kernel panic and "restart your computer" message, even if the keyboard is unplugged.

I was planning to do a clean install of OS X anyway, and figured that since the computer is completely useless at this point, now would be a pretty good time to go ahead and do it. So I tried to boot from the install CD by inserting the CD and holding down the 'C' key. No result -- it doesn't show me the "boot menu", and instead proceeds as usual, to it's "Restart your computer" message and subsequent kernel panic.

So I then tried rebooting and holding down the "Option" key, and managed to get to the boot menu. I selected "Mac OS X Install Disc 1" and clicked the "--->" button ... kernel panic again.

I'm at a complete loss for what to do next. Any help with this would be much appreciated. All I want to do is reinstall OS X.

How can there be a kernel panic from the boot CD? Apple didn't make it where it tries to use the kernel from disk during install did they?

I'm coming from a Linux background, and am not at all familiar with OS X, so forgive me if I've left information out that I should have included. Please let me know if this is the case, and I'll do what I can to provide it for you.

Software :: Macbook Pro Will Not Boot Safe Mode Kernel Panic?

Nov 10, 2010

my name is SPC Sanders. I am a forward observer currently deployed to Afghanistan. I've owned a Macbook Pro for a couple of years.

About three weeks ago, I made the stupid mistake of attempting to run iOSX so I could dual boot with Windows 7 (all stuff I acquired while I was home on midtour leave.) The install seemed to be ok, however, I noticed immediately I could not make any changes to settings as my administrator password was no longer working. (Administrator is my only account on this laptop.)

At fear of losing my operability, I simply did not power down for that whole time. However, I recently moved bases, and alas, the time came to power down.

Upon bootup, I get a constant spinning wheel. I left this on for a couple of hours just to be sure, then realized it was a lost cause. I tried booting in safe mode, and I got some kernel panic. It says a bunch of stuff about debugger calling the panic, bla bla bla, but the thing that caught my eze was Mac OS version not set yet.

After booting in safe mode, getting that error, and powering off, my laptop will boot into a grezish blueish lightblueish (alternating) type of screen, which sometimes has the spinning wheel, sometimes not. Again, nothing.

I understand I will probably need my OS disc to fix this, but I didn't bring it with me. Am I SOL?

OS X :: MBP Graphics Card - Failure?

Stupidly installed this: [URL] wanting better performance from my Nvidia 8600M GT 512Mb. Was asked to restart after install & wouldn't boot (only getting the grey then blue screen in 10.6.2) Am now unable to boot up in anything other than Safemode. While installing update is gives the option to revert, tried this in safe mode but it ends in a fail. If it can revert then somewhere is a backup of the original driver yeah? Where is it & can restore it manually/rename it as the original? Tried to use TimeMachine but won't boot for me in Safemode.

IMac :: 20 Alu - Black Screen - Graphics Card (HD2600) Failure?

Mar 19, 2010

I installed USB Overdrive (a program), I clicked on restart and my iMac never got up. When I start it, the HDD and fans do work. But there is no boot sound, and when I change sound levels, I cannot hear it. I think, it never makes it to OSX. It does not load the OS. I dont think it is Graphics card (HD2600) failure.

When I try to reset PRAM, nothing happens. Usually I must hear it restart again with loud boot sound but it never happens. Also my keyboard does not seem to work, as the CAPSLOCK button does not light up, when pressed. I changed RAM to different moduls, still the same. I checked the iMac RAM on a different computer, it works. Maybe USB Overdrive killed the USB slots? As my USB keyboard does not seem to work

I have a 24" iMac 3.06Ghz with 8800 graphic card. Few weeks ago I had windows 7 installed for dragon age, ran like a charm, but I got rid of partition (dont ask why)

OS X :: Unable To Understanding Kernel Panic On Macbook?

Oct 15, 2010

I have read a million different posts, forums and most places people wouldn't want to go. This Mac is being very stubborn.

I have tried booting to safe mode, running the install disk, tried to load the utility on the install disk even tried a copy of diskwarrior (but I am not sure if it was a bootable copy).

In almost every instance the machine tries to load the cd and then spits it out and I get the restart screen. A few times I get the install to load but then it takes me to a screen that says something like startup run or install from these device after reboot, or something to that effect.

I even tried the command, option p r. If I just hit option with no disk it will list the mac hd. The machine is about 5 years old and is running osx 10.4.1?

This isnt my machine so I cant answer many questions about the OS. I was given a Snow Leopard 10.5 disk that appears to have been open.

PowerPC :: Unable To Work With Kernel Panic Error

Jan 17, 2008

I'm having problems with my powerbook freezing up and needing to be restarted. It's been concluded that when you apply pressure left of the trackpad it freezes with a kernel panic error.

Does anyone know if this can be fixed without a new logicboard? What causes the kernel panic error? Is it allways a hardware problem??

OS X Server :: Unable To Boot - Held On Boot Screen?

Aug 3, 2006

So I installed osx 10.4 server on a Power Mac G4 (white/blue)

Went throught the setup screens and did a complete reformat / install.

Just boots to the loader screen. (Where the mac face shows, followed by a question mark) and just cycles over and over.

I can put the DVD in at this point and restart the install.. I did go in and check the disk permissions and disk status and both passed.

Power Mac :: What Steps Need To Take To Isolate A Graphics Card Failure In A Power Mac G5

May 29, 2012

a friend recently gave me a g5 power mac that had some issues, and the failure was described as intermittant. The machine supposedly would work properly when booted and start freezing up after time, but if turned on the next day it would work properly for some time. I assumed it was an overheating issue, but apperently there is more to the picture. I have tried booting the machine quite a few times and the display always reads no signal. The machine sounds as if it were booting normally, but there is not output. At first I assumed it was my display cable, which was a DVI-D single link, however the DVI-D dual link cable leads to the same result. Is it nessicary to have a DVI-I cable? None of the error LEDs light up on the motherboard. After doing some hunting I haven't found anyone with the same issue, but I am wondering if I should assume the graphics card is dead. What steps do I need to take to isolate a graphics card failure in a power mac g5?

IMac :: Won't Boot - Hdd Failure?

Dec 11, 2008

The string of problems I've encountered started a few days ago. I normally let my imac go to sleep by itself but, on this occasion I told it to sleep via the apple menu. When I awoke the imac the screen was frozen. No mouse movement, no clock movement, nothing. At this point I turned the power off and back on again. It didn't get past the white screen (before the gray with apple logo). I then tried resetting the PRAM, booting in safe mode, and booting from my os disc. Nothing worked.

After several tens of tries it magically booted. It stayed active long enough for me to back up all my data (transferring at least 100GB), reformat the hdd, reinstall leapord, transfer data back, and use it until I let it sleep again.

Intel Mac :: Will Not Boot Up After Power Failure

May 22, 2012

why i have to unplug the power cable from the back of my imac after every power failure at my home to get the imac to boot up.  I've tried resetting the surge protecter and unplugging there.  However, the only option is to unplug the cord from the back of the monitor/imac before it will boot up.

Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

MacBook Pro :: Its Retina Boot Failure

Jun 15, 2012

Just got my new Macbook Pro Retina.  Migrated my applications and data from my Macbook Air.  Everything worked great.  Apple Update advised that new updates were available.  I accepted and ran the updates. Now it gets a kernal panic at boot. Can boot into Safe Mode however.  I used Command R to reinstall OSX but that did not correct my problem.  Same kernal panic persists.

PowerPC :: Unusual PowerBook G4 Boot Failure

Dec 2, 2008

I just recently started to experience some very unusual behavior on an older PowerBook G4, and I was wondering if anyone has experienced this before, as I can't seem to find any documented info on this.Basically, out of the blue, the user began to experience issues waking from sleep, while using the laptop closed with external monitor, USB keyboard and mouse. Although a powercord was always connected, the machine seemed to be powering off.For a while, hitting the power button would boot things up again, properly, but not anymore. I have since disconnected all peripherials. Now, when pressing the power button, the machine will beep 3 times and then repeat itself every so often. The sleep led will blink three times, go solid, then repeat. Sometime the harddrive tries to spin, sometimetimes not

IMac :: Boot Failure Intel (2007) OS X 10.6?

Jun 21, 2010

I know this is a fairly common subject matter but I have tried just about everything suggested but with no success. detailed below are my findings, I was wondering if anyone better qualified than me could suggest a diagnosis?

What does it do?

I hear the fans and hard drive and see the white/grey boot screen with the apple logo and spinning cog. The cog will spin for anything from 5 - 30 seconds before freezing. Some disk activity will continue for a short time afterwards before everything grinds to a halt?

PowerPC :: Trouble Shooting PowerBook Boot Failure

Nov 7, 2006

when my PowerBook (15", bought new in Aug 2004) wakes from sleep, the harddrive makes a dreaded tapping/clicking sound. It's very prominent and is not your standard HDD "chatter."Often, Finder will hang and I'm forced to power-cycle the machine. Most of the time, it boots without incident.Lately, however, there have been incidents. Tonight, when I got home, it froze. I tried to power-cycle it, but got nothing. I plugged it in.
