Software :: Booting Mac Book Pro With Cd?
Dec 2, 2008
my new mac book pro stalled upon opening MS powerpoint. I could not kill the process, so I rebooted with the start button. Upon rebooting, the laptop just stays with the apple logo and rotating disk. Using OS v10.5.1 boot disk 1 and holding the down the <c> key does not work - the computer keeps rebooting. Next, booting with the option key gives me a choice, the hard drive or the CD. At least after ~2 minutes, nothing changes with the apple logo and rotating disk, using either the hard drive or CD.

Several fonts in my font book changed from a book file to a .doc at random, and now are not openable. How can I change them back, or at least get them to work?! This is for a business graphic arts networked system so an answer as soon as possible would be awesome.

I have a Power Mac G5 (Late 2005 - regular cooling heatsink) and its not booting up. Apple Hardware Test gives the following error:
2FAN/4/8: CPU A INTAKE
This is our Main Server running DHCP, DNS, AFP and Netboot. So its really critically I have it up and running. So far I have semi disassembled and air canned it. So no dust. All the fans are working however the fans next to the heatsink seems to run a bit slow then others. I have unplugged all the extra hardware (RAID Card). Have reseated the memory and have tried different memories. Did the PRAM reset.

I've got a MacBook Air (not mine) with me at the moment and I believe it's got quite a big problem.
Basically when you turn the Air on a black screen display for a couple of seconds with the chimes playing then a white screen appears at which point you can go no further.
I've tried everything; pressing the Option key to try and display the two partitions on the SSD, resetting the PRAM and SMC, pressing the D key and pressing the C key to try and get the install disc started in the connected SuperDrive. Nada.
I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on this problem before I take it to KRCS in Nottingham for diagnosis and repair? Maybe there is something I've missed or others have had a similar problem?

A friend of mine has a Mac Pro Desktop. He was currently running a Snow Leopard and installed Bootcamp. When he was prompted to insert his Windows he did and it rebooted. Now after rebooting it prompts him to " Select CD-Rom Boot Type: 1. or 2." but the keyboard will not respond. I cannot open the CD tray to insert the Mac OSX CD. So how can I restore the Mac back to where he was before the bootcamp installation. He does does have a Time Capsule installed.

I am on 10.6.4. I have learned that I can boot up in 32-bit mode by holding down the 3 and 2 keys while starting up. Is reverting back to 64-bit mode as easy as holding down the 6 and 4 key? If not, then what?

Have a G5 iMac (non Intel) that was running OS 10.4.11 that now won't boot. I get the chime and the Apple then blue screen where it hangs. It won't even boot from an install CD/DVD (same routine) to blue screen. I had wanted to do an archive and reinstall but couldn't get the disk to boot. I have been able to Safe Boot and view files. In Safe Boot, I've verified the hard drive (no problems detected) and Repaired Privileges, but still won't boot (blue Screen). I've tried an install disk with same result (no boot and blue screen).
I've hooked the G5 to another G5 iMac, booted the bad G5 in Target Mode. The hard drive appears on the second G5s desktop. Using CCC have cloned the hard drive to an external hard drive (now have a backup of I don't know what. During the cloning, Norton AntiVirus detected and Quarantined a virus. I've run DiskUtility from the second iMac and again found no problems with the hard drive or permissions. Should I erase the bad hard drive, reinstall system software (using an interim user). The try to migrate all the old applications and files from the clone? If not what should I do next?

What could possibly make a macbook pro overheat before it is even booted? I have bootcamp installed so I can run solidworks and a few misc programs in XP. The machine always runs a bit toasty for my liking under windows so I use smc fan control to crank the fan and then reboot into XP pro. This works great as long as I dont need to sleep the computer and re-open later. In this situation the fans dont resume the higher speed I specified and I get temps in the 70-80C range.Thats not really the problem though. Today I started the machine (from a complete shutdown) and held option to bring up the bootcamp chooser. Meanwhile I was distracted with something at work so the computer sat like this for 15 minutes. No OS had booted, just the gray chooser screen. When I came back the fans were running full blast! The overheat protection had come on. I quickly booted into snowleopard and the temps were in the high 80-low 90's. After a minute it was back to normal 50's but I'm puzzled. All software is up to date.Nothing was even running?!? How is this possible? Nothing should have been straining the system.

I posted a while back with my macbook not working, with the disc spinning, steady sleep light, but no chime and black screen.well since then I took out screws and had a look at the logic board, tightened all the loose screws, and pulled this metal fabric wire through the screw by the disc drive, it was loose and torn.
And after waiting, it turned on!But I still got shut off abruptly, distorted screens, kernel panics, and force restart messages. Then it wouldn't boot up at all without pressure near the power button. That worked for a while, then it would turn off. Then pressure had to be applied elsewhere to get it to turn on.I have pressed on the flat rest above the harddrive, the opposite side of the power button, everywhere.re there screws that I shouldn't have tightened? Is there something wrong with that fabric metal thing?Another issue is that there has been overheating, and I'm sure power offs due to overheating, and I know the fan is running, but still getting too hot.

Yesterday I installed Ice Clean and ran a few of the maintenance procedures. This morning when I tried starting my laptop, it started with grey screen and apple symbol, then black screen with white text stating:
Mar 13 08:02:44 launched: can't exec /bin/sh for single user: no such file or directory.
I tried contacting Ice Clean, they claim it is not related. I checked my system profile and I thought I had 1gb of RAM it only says 512gb. Could a RAM failure cause this problem? Have started using target disk mode with my old faithful G4 and everything on the hard disk is still intact. Ran disk utility and all ok!

I have a PowerMac G5 dual 1.8ghz running leopard. It worked flawlessly since the day I bought it.
Then as of last week whenever I booted the computer I would get the gray screen with a black box saying to reboot the computer (in 5 different languages). I would reboot the computer. Same screen.
Is there some way to check what is wrong? Is this typically a hardware issue or an operating system?

I was installing Tiger using FireWire from my Powermac G4 and it was nearly done when my Powerbook (target) died due to lack of battery... When the Powermac was rebooted, I get only a question mark and flashing smile.
I tried to test the C and T keys holding them down during boot up but only get the smiley face every single time... I even disconnected the secondary drive to no avail.

Please could you help me with this problem that i've got with my Powermac G5.
Spec is
Dual G5
2gb ram
I'm trying to boot from the Mac OS cd (tried 10.4 that it came with and 10.5) and both get to the grey screen with the Apple Logo and that's as far as it gets. No spinning loading wheel.
Tried the following..
PRAM reset
Swapping Ram out
Is there anything else i can do. It's a really good machine so i hope it's not needing a Logic Board repair!

I recently received a friend's iBook (G4 - not sure about other specs) and it isn't booting. The computer just hangs at the Apple logo when I try to boot from the hard drive.
So I decided the easiest way to fix it would be to simply take my retail leopard disc and install it on the machine (they don't need any data recovery). When I hold the option key the Leopard disc shows up fine, but after I select it and click the arrow to continue it just sits at the apple logo with a twirling loading icon. Anyone else had this issue? Any ideas?
Do I need to reset the system profile or something? Sorry I am an old-school mac newbie... my own machine is a MacBook and I'm much more familiar with it than this G4 iBook.

I am interested in booting another OS, Besides OSX, such as linux, from a Flashdrive. I was wondering how I might go about actually getting this to work with OSX. I've found some versions of Linux that can boot from a Flashdrive, but I'm not sure how I would get my Macbook to recognize it.

I just bought a new iMac (2.93) today and every time I turn it on it makes a weird zzzZZ noise. Same thing happens when I wake the computer up from sleep mode. It sounds like its coming from the disc drive area. IDK if this is normal or what to do to fix it

My Black Macbook will not boot up. Instead it rests at the gray screen and does 3 beeps. I have done research and it is supposed to indicate a RAM problem but my RAM [i believe] is fine, I even rechecked the slots and everything. This has happened before but I just rebooted and it worked fine but now it is not. I tried plugging in my Mac into different power outlets and even having it run without being plugged in but it fails to make a difference. I have scheduled a genius appointment and I know my macbook is older than a year so i'm wondering a few things: how can I get them to replace my Macbook, how can i get them to fix the problem [for free] even if my warranty has run out, if they don't replace it [which i heard they should do] what is my best option [buying a new one is outta the question for financial reasons]
