I turn on my powerbook G4 and the gray screen with the apple appears, seconds later, the screen turns black with a gray degradation line in the middle of the screen. Everything else is black.
View 2 RepliesWhen I start my computer up in the morning everything else starts normally. First the light comes on on the front of the computer and on the bottom of the monitor, then the start up tone rings and the computer is fully running. But my monitor is black and I do not get the apple picture or nothing on the screen. I thought my monitor was going out, but we have another work station the same and I switched the monitors (same 27" cinema screen as mine). I can actually use the other computer and network into my computer and fully use everything on my computer. But my monitor is black (no display)! I have contacted MAC and have reset the PMU button many times and sometimes this works, but most of the time it does not. I just keep restarting the computer and finally it will start up normally with the display and everything.

We just get a new mac air. We were trying netflix video, and the browser did not response. Now It get a black screen and can't start.
I tried to press power button, etc, but nothing works.
We are rather new to Mac world. What are the things I could try?
BTW, the Mac air comes with a power supply only. There is no DVD drive or thing like that. How do I re-install OS if I need to?
After searching the mac forums for a while, it seems like no one else has experienced this problem. All similar problems with black screens occurred during Windows installation, not once it had been installed.
Here's my problem:
I installed boot camp just fine, no problems. Hold option key on startup, and I get 2 options: Macintosh HD and Windows. When I selected Windows for the first few days, it would load up, no problem, and I would be able to run Windows XP.
However, all of a sudden (i.e. didn't download or install anything on either partition that would mess things up) when I select the Windows partition at start up, it goes to a black screen (I don't even see the windows startup logo), and stays like that until I hit the power button on my mac pro tower.
I'm not sure if it matters, but during this black screen process, my keyboard is non responsive.
I attemped to download windows 7 into my macbook pro last night, didn't end up finishing the download due to a few problems. Now when I try to start up my computer it goes to the white screen first, than to a black screen where a little " _ "flashes. how to get it to boot up in Mac OS? I'm using the newest installation of lion.

I have a MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running Tiger 10.4.11. It has an issue where it takes a LOT of tries (10 - 20 tries) to get it to start up. When I hit the power button, it will turn on, the hard drive spins, the fans go, the usb ports work (I had a laptop cooler hooked up to it that would spin when I turned the computer power on), BUT the screen stays black, no chime. If I keep trying, by holding the power button down for 10 seconds and then hitting it again, it will usually start up on the 10th or 15th or so try.
I've tried varying amounts of time between tries, five minutes, ten minutes, overnight, etc. I haven't done any recent software or hardware updates. Once the computer starts up, it works just fine, aside from running quite hot (typically 60+ sometimes up to 80+C when I'm running photoshop or illustrator).
On my Mac Pro i have windows XP on hard drive number 2. I went to boot to it today after installing a program and nothing happens. The monitors are receiving information but there just a black screen.
Not sure what i should do considering that i can still access the drive and files from the MAC Side. I can also get to the boot screen to select safe mode but that also does nothing.
It is a early 09 Mac Pro...i have been using the computer this way since last April. Cant figure out what happened.
I am having a problem with my 2009 Mac Pro. It fails to boot. There is no chime and the screen wont turn on;stays black. It wont boot off of the system dvd and I even tried installing an HD that has a good version of the the OS on it. I also tried booting from the DVD with no installed drives to rule out one of the internal drives doing someothing funky. Nothing happens at all, the HD or DVD will spin for a moment and then all is dead.

Every time I close the lid so the computer can "sleep" it does, but when I open the lid back up, it refuses to wake up. My friend has the same computer and automatically her screen lights up when she opens the lid from sleep. My screen will stay black up to 10 minutes sometimes. Why is this happening? Should I bring it in to Apple? Also, when I shut my computer down, starting it up is another hassel in itself. The screen goes white like it's suppose to, but only for a split second. The apple in the center never shows up, and the screen just goes black. It's very aggravating and I feel like I'm the one with the only messed up mac.

When I press the start button the screen goes on and I hear the chime but after 2 to 3 seconds the screen goes completely black. the fan in working the red light under the mouse is on. led # 1,2,3 are all on. I can't find my original system disk, so I inserted an original system disk from my macbook and tried pressing "C" at start up. But what ever I do the screen goes on for 2 or 3 second and after that goes black and stays black.

I have an older MacBook and when I bought it, from a friend, it already had windows running on it. Just the other day I went to restart my computer and all I got want the black screen saying that the computer was turned off wrong and to choose the start up mode. I tried the last known option and nothing happened besides restarting to the same screen. Then I tried the normal mode and that didn't work and safe mode did the same thing, starting back up to the black screen. Is there something that I can do/fix, or does this require some professional.

Currently, when I push the power button to start it up, it makes the initial sound (although sometimes this initial sound is abbreviated, like it's cut off mid sound) but it never sounds the follow-up majestic-type chime. Also, the screen remains black, and the keyboard is unresponsive (The Caps doesn't light up, for instance). The light on the front comes on faintly, but does not blink as in sleep mode. And the fan comes on as well, again faintly, not as in overdrive.
And I'm assuming this next part is coincidental but I'll relay it anyway: The first hiccup with this was yesterday when, in sleep mode, I pushed the front release button to open the MCP and then immediately afterward accidentally closed it again. Upon opening it for the second time the screen remained black. I manually shut it down holding the power button. After two or three times of turning it on and off manually, the majestic chime thing finally sounded and it booted properly. It worked fine then throughout the rest of the day when I would come back to it until last night when it failed again.
I'm doing my best not to panic here but I'm sure you can feel my pain. I got up this morning, made my coffee and opened up my MBP to start my day.
I can hear that start up sound but the screen is completely black. Nothing. It was fine yesterday and I didn't do anything different when I closed it to put it in sleep mode. But now it won't wake up. I pulled the battery, let it cool (seemed a little warm since I just started it)....still black screen.
Can anyone provide any advice on how to fix?

A couple of days ago started to occasionally make a clank clank noise and getting stacked on the spinning colour circle, only manual restart would do it.
Thought it might be the hard disk as it is a bit old and i never replaced anything on it, shacked it and a noise of something loose would happen, so i thought of opening it up and see if i could reattach anything loose....anyway i started unscrewing following instructions, couldn't get memory out...every screw seems different and so i gave up, put it all back together, praying that the screws are all in their right places and hey, now it wont even start, not a loose sound when shaken though, but not a bip not a light, black screen, nothing...only sign of life is the green light under the num block key and the capitals arrow also starts light

View 1 Replies View RelatedIve been having some issues with my monitors going black during working, it happens on the mac side but more often on through bootcamp running windows 7.
It also has been getting a frozen start up screen at the apple logo. All the times it does start up i do hear the start up chime. I have tried to reset pram and smc but that does not seem to solve the problem, Ive also run a check using techtool pro v6 and it has come up with no issues.
Ive recently upgraded my graphics card to the nvidia quadro 4000, ive read the issues with card in the past but since the lion release its become better supported i thought not sure if thats the problem or something with the mac pro itself, i have updates the cards drivers for both windows and mac. Im currently running 3 OS, OSX 10.6.8, Lion and windows 7 (bootcamp)

I have a 2009-2010 27inch iMac with OSX and software fully updated.My Mac started shutting down or going into deep sleep when left on.I've tried rebooting, power long hold, checking cords etc.I've attempted the 5 second hold after disconnecting the power cord, plugging back in and start no luck.I hear a very small click inside when I long hold, sometimes a very faint spinning sound but nothing else.The fan came on once after a start attempt but nothing else happened. I can't seem to safe start because the screen remains black.

I've got a nasty issue with my 13-mo. old MacBook.
I'm pretty sure it's a dead logic board and possibly a dead hard drive, which I really, really, really hope not as I don't have backups of everything on the drive. I just upgraded to Leopard this past week and did a clean install so not all of my stuff is setup yet.
Power adapter and battery are inserted. All 3rd party peripherals and RAM have been removed.
MacBook does not chime at boot. The screen flickers, but stays black. If I hold down the power button then try to let it boot the light on the front right flashes constantly (like when it's sleeping but a faster pace), like a turn signal on a car. I can hear the cd-rom drive whining but everything else is dead silent.
I've done everything here with the exception of calling Apple.[URL]
I've also tried FW Target Disk Mode, but the MacBook drive does not show up.
I've done everything I can think of and I'm out of ideas at this point.
Additionally, there's a cd-rom (Tiger Restore CD) stuck in the drive. Holding down the mouse button during restart does not eject this CD. Where is the force eject button (I see no pinhole)?
I have business documents, emails, etc. that I HAVE TO get off this hard drive. How can I do it? I don't have a 2.5" drive enclosure but if that will solve the situation I will pick one up asap.
I was just using my powerbook G4 12" when it "clicked", the screen went black and it will not respond. the power cable light is on, and I've tried another battery, but it does not turn on! the little light on the latch button that glows usually, is not on. What has happened to my Powerbook????! I don't have applecare but I imagine I will be calling Apple this morning unless someone can help here
I am currently experiencing problems booting up my imac 17-inch, 1.6GHz (2004 model I think). When I hit the power button the machine starts but the screen rmains black and after about 3 mins of this, the fan goes into overdrive! The only way I can turn the computer on at the moment is to remove the casing and use the on switch located inside the the machine, although this is no guarantee it will work, sometimes it does but the majority of times it will be the same black screen as before. All I am waiting to hear is the part in the top corner (hard drive~?) to click into gear and then it's fine, and the machine seems to work perfectly. But this is not a solution and I fear it is only a matter of time before the machine just explodes altogether

I came back from work to wake up my iMac. It made the noise but the screen stayed black. I tried restarting by holding the power button- I can hear it start and the chime but still have a black screen. I tried resetting the pram, and unplugging the cord but I still get a black screen. I can hear the chime though; I'm not sure if that means anything. I just had the hard drive replaced in February so I hope it's not that. just wanted to clarify that when I restart, I get the chime but the screen stays black- I don't get to the grey screen. So I'm assuming right now that my display may be shot?

start up I get a black bar one inch from the left, approx 4 inches in diameter running from the top of the screen to the bottom. The Apple 'logo' plus all the finder 'words' appear on the right hand side of this black bar. The cursor will not go beyond the black bar. It's as though it hits a wall.
