Software :: Won't Work With Filevault / Can't Unlock
Mar 30, 2010
Macbook, bought in 2006, 10.6.2
had the spinning rainbow for a day, went to gray screen with apple icon and spinning time wheel, but no boot. Went to safe boot, fscky, 3 attempts no fix.
Decided for re-install, went to target mode, everything in Home Folder is gone. Facepalm. I run Filevault. Last backup 1 month ago, no maintenance user. Am i locked out?

I just reinstalled Mac OS X in my mac mini - new hard drive (320GB) and I wanted to try the FileVault feature for once.... but I get a message saying that my home folder is not in a Mac Extended FS.
I checked the Disk Utility and I have only 1 partition formatted with Mac Extended FS (Case Sensitive).
Is there a special setup to enable FileVault? (I'm new to this stuff)

I recently did a fresh OS install of my mac. I knew that everything was safely backed up on my external drive (through time machine). However, for some reason my filevault home folder ISN'T showing up on the external drive. I am quite certain the files are there, it's just my mac can no longer read them it seems....Is there any way to recover this data?

My mac recently crashed and did not start back on. In worry, I installed my leopard DVD to start back the computer. As far as I remember everytime I shut my comp. down it went though FILEVAULT. And now in order to the computer to work I had install everything again. So I did. It asked me to delete all files and folders and I clicked YES, hoping I have in my time capsule or filevault. But now I don't know to restore my files.

I had some problems after updating the iTunes, and at the end, I decided to use Time Machine. Picked a date before iTunes update, but after finishing, I could not logon. The filevault came with a warning, not able to logon to "my acount name", due to a failure. I'm 100% of the password, and when i try other passwords, it simply shake. I can logon through guest, but all programs, files etc are gone.Â
Anyone who knows about this...what to do? Is there any way I can collect the information from the Time Machine? When I'm possitive about the right password?Â
When i just reinstall Lion, there are a few programs missing...iPhoto, iWeb, Garage etc...Should i start installing Snow Leopard, and afterwards the Lion? Dont wanna spend money on the programs that i had earlier through the Snow program...Â

I have a problem with FileVault on my MacBook Air mid 2013, with yosemite 10.10.1 installed. On initial setup I turned on encrypting and it finished in an hour. But then I realized it uses too much energy and tried to turn it off, but it said the encryption is not finished and i need to connect to the power adapter. I've done it, but nothing happened. Even though the progress bar shows it's finished, I can't now turn it off.

Trying to turn on FileVault I get a message saying:
There isn't enough space on your hard disk to turn on FileVault. Turning on FileVault requires an additional 132.2 GB of free space on the volume "Macintosh HD". Try emptying the Trash or deleting files you don't need.
Finder says that hard drive "Macintosh HD" has a capacity of 499.76 GB and that 180.42 GB are available. Am I to understand that to run FileVault I would need 312.62 GB (132.2 + 180.42 GB) empty on a 499.76 GB hard drive?! Seems crazy! Might this be related to Parallels 6 or something?

I just enabled filevault for my macbook pro, I was worried about it while on campus and traveling and wanted an added layer of security. Now my powerpoints won't work, they won't even load, this only happened since enabling powerpoint yesterday. Is there anything I can do to make it work or do I need to disable filevault?

After talking to AppleCare, my understanding is that FileVault works by storing the entire home directory as an encrypted disk image. Fair enough, this makes sense.
However, I'm going to configure my Mac Pro with an SSD as the boot disk, and plan to move my home directory off to the non-boot disk. With FileVault enabled, this raises a couple concerns for the SSD Boot disk.

Or are there better ways to do this? I read about some disadvantages and I won't be able to use file sharing with windows. I want to make sure my data's protected if my MBP got stolen.

Just returned from the apple store. They can't explain what happened but there is a FileVault error and it cant be fixed. We now have a parallel login but no software or files are on it. The tech at the store suggested someone who may be able to get into the FileVault. This just suddenly happened with no forewarning. The iMac is under a year old.

I turned file-vault on in Mac OSX Lion 10.7.3 and now I am presented with log-in screens 2 times whenever I reboot my mac. First log-in screen comes immediately, is a light gray screen with filevault-enabled users, so I enter my password there and after some time I am presented with a second normal log-in screen, dark gray with all users. After entering my password in this second login screen, I am able to use my mac. Â
I am wondering if this 2 log-in screens is the normal behavior after turning on the filevault 2 on in Mac OSX Lion?

I've got a MacBookPro that's a couple of years old, but hasn't had any problems before - and then I updated to Yosemite. Since then it's been sluggish, stuttering and with a spinning rainbow wheel every five or ten seconds. It's got to the point where it's unusable - you click, you wait, then wait, then it reacts. Sloooow. Â
It's a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 model, purchased in Summer 2012. 4GB of memory - and I've deleted everything off it, all my files and any third party programmes have gone now. On a 500GB hard disk, there's 468GB free now. It's practically got bats flying around in there it's so empty.Â
Apple suggested a PRAM restart, then an erase & install, which I've done a couple of times. No dice. Then I saw that FileVault is running, trying to encrypt everything on the computer. It's stalled at around 20% or so, and hasn't changed for days. You can't switch off FileVault while it's encrypting, so I'm pretty stuck at the moment; I can't leave it running because it renders the computer unusable, and reinstalling won't stop FileVault either. Â
how to switch off FileVault while it's running, and how to disable it in future?

As a non-UNIX-geek, and someone unfamiliar with the internals of OS X in general, I'd like to ask ya'll where sensitive data might be stored outside of the Home directory. As you may know, FileVault only encrypts the Home directory, and stores the password as a hash of the account password and the "master" reset password.
So, what sensitive stuff is outside of the Home Directory? Any system logs with potentially damaging info? Any badly written applications (i.e. MS Office 2004) that might keep sensitive data within the Application directory? Any stuff inside of the Library or System folders?

Ok so i installed new software onto my mac then it told me to restart so i did. When it ran up again it gave me the log in screen so I logged in and typed my password in. Then it just gives me the default background and a cursor. I can log in on my other two accounts but all of my data is on the account I cant log in on! I have got Filevault enabled if that could be the problem??

I've just turned File Vault on on my MacBook Pro 13". I've followed all the steps: noting the FileVault Key, storing it into Apple and restarting my Mac. When my Mac has started, it has asked me for my login, and everything goes OK until the moment my desktop appears. At that moment in time, my Mac hangs, and I get the "colourful beach ball" and nothing seems to happen. I do have a backup on my Time Machine and I can format the disk and start over, but I don't understand why my Mac is freezing just because I've turned FileVault on.

i do have an urgent problem with my macbook pro. for some days its tellingme that my startup disk is full. therefore i cleared about 14 gb of space from the 500 gb disk. next day i controlled via get info and i could literally see the space being used up again in ca 40 min. so i googled around via my phone since the mac did not show any websites anymore...
so i know now that it is not the time macine since i do not use it as also any idisk or any other backup software/hardware
i downloaded grandperspective and found this sparsebundle file of incredible 418Gb size made of many many numbered files of 8,4MB each fromca 10 different dates since i have the mac.Â
i am new to mac and an old dos user therefore i do not know how this bundle is designed or if i can delete files of this band folder. i googled that this file is from FileVault and therefore reconstructed everytime i log out. i do at times hard reset the mac(5secs power button) when its not as fast as i want or blocked by too great 3d files i work onold dos habit. could these be leftovers?
please please help me with this issue since i have to work and like that the beautiful mac doesnt even open up websites..
