how I can mark a folder not to be encrypted by FileVault 2?

I have just one file folder on my laptop with sensitive data that needs to be encrypted, can I do that with file vault? If so, how? and if not, any 3rd party app for that? I have 1 password but that won't cut it.

As a non-UNIX-geek, and someone unfamiliar with the internals of OS X in general, I'd like to ask ya'll where sensitive data might be stored outside of the Home directory. As you may know, FileVault only encrypts the Home directory, and stores the password as a hash of the account password and the "master" reset password.
So, what sensitive stuff is outside of the Home Directory? Any system logs with potentially damaging info? Any badly written applications (i.e. MS Office 2004) that might keep sensitive data within the Application directory? Any stuff inside of the Library or System folders?
i thought my filevault sparsebundle was my timemachine backups, and it was taking up 125gb of space.. so i deleted it, now when i try to log on it says "error opening this users filevault" and so i started it in command line and now i tried to run it in single user mode, but it won't let me type any letters when it is installing and it just wont work.

How do I find out if FileVault is enabled?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI turned file-vault on in Mac OSX Lion 10.7.3 and now I am presented with log-in screens 2 times whenever I reboot my mac. First log-in screen comes immediately, is a light gray screen with filevault-enabled users, so I enter my password there and after some time I am presented with a second normal log-in screen, dark gray with all users. After entering my password in this second login screen, I am able to use my mac. Â
I am wondering if this 2 log-in screens is the normal behavior after turning on the filevault 2 on in Mac OSX Lion?

I've just turned File Vault on on my MacBook Pro 13". I've followed all the steps: noting the FileVault Key, storing it into Apple and restarting my Mac. When my Mac has started, it has asked me for my login, and everything goes OK until the moment my desktop appears. At that moment in time, my Mac hangs, and I get the "colourful beach ball" and nothing seems to happen. I do have a backup on my Time Machine and I can format the disk and start over, but I don't understand why my Mac is freezing just because I've turned FileVault on.

given the disaster with FileVault 1 under 10.7.3 (passwords logged in plaintext in secure.log...) I changed my laptop to FileVault 2. But now I can't enable a guest account anymore. Have I lost the guest account on this system?Â

View 2 Replies View Relatedi do have an urgent problem with my macbook pro. for some days its tellingme that my startup disk is full. therefore i cleared about 14 gb of space from the 500 gb disk. next day i controlled via get info and i could literally see the space being used up again in ca 40 min. so i googled around via my phone since the mac did not show any websites anymore...
so i know now that it is not the time macine since i do not use it as also any idisk or any other backup software/hardware
i downloaded grandperspective and found this sparsebundle file of incredible 418Gb size made of many many numbered files of 8,4MB each fromca 10 different dates since i have the mac.Â
i am new to mac and an old dos user therefore i do not know how this bundle is designed or if i can delete files of this band folder. i googled that this file is from FileVault and therefore reconstructed everytime i log out. i do at times hard reset the mac(5secs power button) when its not as fast as i want or blocked by too great 3d files i work onold dos habit. could these be leftovers?
please please help me with this issue since i have to work and like that the beautiful mac doesnt even open up websites..

I'm now unable to log in to an account, I get the following error: You are unable to log in to the Filevault user account ___ at this time. Log in in failed because an error occurred. I know my password is correct btw. This is an account on a partition on the drive of a Macbook Pro.

I have had FileVault 2 enabled on my MacBook Air (late 2010) and have been running regular disk speed tests using Blackmagic.Â
This week I bought a new 2GHz Air with 256GB disk and ran Blackmagic, which showed impressive 453/404 MB/s speeds. All well and good. Then I switched on FileVault 2 and decided to repeat the test to see if there was any speed degredation as a result of the encryption. Now I get an error message that the Air's disk is "read only" and Blacmagic cannot run. If I had had problems on the old Air I would have assumed FV2 was the culprit.

Has Apple patched this up? Apparently FileVault 1 and 2 can be easily broken into with a piece of code called VileFault. Is our data safe?

I've enabled Filevault 2 on my Lion primary HD. When scanning my disk with Disk Utility, it tells me that I it needs to be repaired and that I need to reboot my Mac and hold CMD+R keys, then enter Disk Utility in "restore mode" of Lion. So that's what I do: I restart my Mac and enter restore mode. Now, to fix my drive, I need to unlock it. In Disk Utility, the disk is greyed out and when clicking on it, a "unlock" button appears at the top. I've tried every possible password I know (including the restore key), but I'm UNABLE to unlock my HD.Â
Funny thing is that I know my password is right, because I can select the Change password feature in the File menu and it works well. But the new password can't unlock the hard drive! when Filevault 2 is enabled, how can I unlock the drive to scan and repair it? Is there a bug in this feature?

I've decided to remove the ability for users on my computer to decrypt my FileVault 2-encrypted drive using their account passwords. Is there any way to do so without having to decrypt and re-encrypt all my data?

Since I activated FileVault 2 on my Mac boot drive without initializing it, I'd assume that the same thing could be done for any other drive. I've got some external drives with hundreds of GB of data which I'd like to encrypt. Disk Utility lets do it by erasing the drive and encrypting the data written afterwards.
Is there any hidden feature that allows one to convert the drive without erasing it first, like the FileVault utility did for the boot drive (even when working on it!)?

I had used FileVault 2 on the entire drive and had later deleted all contents. After changing my mind, I used SoftTote Data recovery for mac to retrieve the deleted files. So now I have a bunch of reconstructed .dbf files and such, but I don't know how to access them. Any better way to retrieve the data I regretted deleting?

I just used Migration Assistant to move my files from my iMac to my new Macbook Pro. I didn't know about the Filevault problem so when I tried logging in, I got the error message and I am unable to login to my account (the only one on the computer). The support page says to make a root user, but how can I do that when I can't even log in to my account. I dont have a disc copy of Lion I can use to start up with, only a copy of 10.6.

After installing Lion, I can no longer move program icons from my applications folder to a sub folder. When I do, it makes a copy and leave the original in the applications folder. When I then try to delete the icon in the applications folder it tells me it's required by the OS and won't let me delete. I'm forced to keep certan applications such as Time Machine and Stickies in the application folder.

I would like to create a Smart folder that only has applications & utilities in a sub-folder.Â
This will be similar to the default applications folder that shows in the dock, but without all the extra files & folders - just a list of applications.Â
I can do this by esily by just having a smart folder of applications showing only type=application.
However, I would still like to have utilities in a sub-folder.Â
If thats not possible, then it would be OK to have 2 seperate smart folders, 1 for apps excluding utilities & 1 for utilities only.Â
Is there some way in the smart folder options i can exclude a sub directory?
I must have done something to my installation of OS X. When I go to create a new folder, it automatically creates the folder with the name "untitled folder". The problem is, the name isn't selected. Normally, when you create a new folder, you can just type the name immediately. For me, I have to create the new folder, then click on the name to select the text and then type it. Also, when I do go to type in the new name, the text "untitled folder" doesn't disappear. I just type over it.Â

I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.Â
Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research.Â
After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?
