My mac recently crashed and did not start back on. In worry, I installed my leopard DVD to start back the computer. As far as I remember everytime I shut my comp. down it went though FILEVAULT. And now in order to the computer to work I had install everything again. So I did. It asked me to delete all files and folders and I clicked YES, hoping I have in my time capsule or filevault.But now I don't know to restore my files.
View 5 Repliesi thought my filevault sparsebundle was my timemachine backups, and it was taking up 125gb of space.. so i deleted it, now when i try to log on it says "error opening this users filevault" and so i started it in command line and now i tried to run it in single user mode, but it won't let me type any letters when it is installing and it just wont work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had about 40 short videos on an SD card and I thought I copied them to their appropriate file. Well, incidentally, I didn't get them copied, and I went to clean off the SD card. I selected all the files, and "moved" them to the trash. I did not empty the trash, but I opened the trash and they are no where to be found.... I was curios if my MacBook Pro might send those types of files to the trash in a different format, or do they send a bulk of files like that somewhere else? Here is an example of how the files read "IM000003.AVI" the number changes with its position... I am prepared to eat my mistake and not have those vids anymore, but I would sure like some direction if anyone has any.... they gotta be on my computer somewhere....
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a friend who has dropped his Home folder onto my external hard drive (including Photos, Movies, Library etc.). He was hoping that I could recover some photos from his folders that he says were accidentally deleted. I know traditionally you would just run recovery software like DiskWarrior or Tech Tool Pro but he no longer owns his mac and simply has these folders to work with.
So the basic question is:
Is it possible to recover deleted photos from the iPhoto Library using only the Photos folder (which contains his entire iPhoto library) and his home Library folder.
also if it is not possible to recover photos of any kind, is it possible to recover anything else? I would love to be able to at least show him some sort of results as I owe him a favor
The USB flash drive is Sandisk, 4GB, formatted for Mac. It became corrupted and I don't have access to stored files. The messages on screen is that disk can not be read and invitation to reformat it. I found special software for recovering files from corrupted drives but it is not affordable for a student like me. I've tried to find in forums and word of mouth some shareware/freeware working on Mac OS 10.3.9 but all I got is programs that take space on HD and do nothing, that is, software that is about selling and marketing stuff, not the real thing. Tried with 3 different such a programs, sheer time wasting. I found that this area is pretty much absolutely dark. Do experienced fellow mac users know about some truly working shareware/freeware that can help me retrieve the files from this corrupted Sandisk USB flash drive?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was just about to burn a cd to back up some files. I put them all on the cd (didn't click burn yet) and then I deleted them off my computer, and the clear my trash can. I went to burn the cd and realized I had made a bad mistake. It still shows the alias' on the cd folder. Is there any way I can get the files out of the alias? Or am I too far screwed and have to get a recovery program?

So i cloned my old install onto my external hard drive using carbon copy cloner. once that was done and verified that it was good, i inserted my leopard dvd and installed: erasing my os x install...now i booted up and was messing in disk utility and erased my external hard drive...i thot it was the other one i had plugged in for time machine! i just lost all my important files, including my itunes library, and everything else that i really need!!
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to snow leopard because i needed to install logic pro and I decided to format the hard drive, I did my back up but there was to much music on it so I did a couple of dvd's just for the music I compressed them (.zip) with stuffit one of them did work but the other one where it has all of Itunes library doesn't unzip. I wonder if I can recover it from time machine?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was installing an upgrade for one of my applications, and i had to reboot my i mac. After reboot it was stuck on the white apple screen for maybe a half an hour, then on the blue login screen for maybe 5-10 I went to sleep after 5.
When It restored there were no user accounts, and I had to create a new one. All of the programs were available, but I had to authorize and all that kind of stuff.
I just wanted to know if there was a way recover the deleted user files on the mac?
I had a PC before I had a MAC, and I started using my external hard drive (a FAT32 drive) with my MAC using NTFS-3g. Now my hard drive has stopped working - it is recognised by my mac although no files show up, and it is not recognised in the PCs I've tried it in, and seems to crash them. I tried DiskWarrior to recover the data, but it only works in NTFS. I am looking for a way to try and fix the drive and retrieve the data using a mac rather than a PC.

So now I have a bunch of reconstructed .dbf files and such, but I don't know how to access them. Any better way to retrieve the data I regretted deleting?

I recently installed ilife 09 into my imac but I cant take advantage of the face detection feature. I deleted my jpg files in the data folder because I thought it was a duplicate file. I didn't know when downloading pictures from a digital camera, iphoto creates two jpg files. One in data folder and other in original folder. I tried copying the jpg files from original folder into the data folder but I'm still having issues. Is there any way I can recover my jpg files from data folder?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo my friend, whos' computer this is, deleted my account and all its files associated with it (when he was mad at me lol) but didn't realize or forgot that there was a text document on there with atleast 30 hrs of work on it and i hadn't managed to back it up on another system yet. so is there any way to recover this file? I have filesalvage running currently and tried diskwarrior but that didn't seem to be the proper tool to use. Any mac freaks got any advice? It'd be really nice NOT to have to repeat 30 hrs of work, but at this rate its already taken 10 hrs or so just trying to recover this file.

I took my computer to the Genius Bar and the guy said my drive was dead but said I could possibly recover some of my files with an external hard drive. How exactly would I go about doing this? I've searched through posts but haven't really found anything specific. Do I go through Disk Utility or do I need a third party program like Data Rescue? He said to just boot from an external drive and then browse my old hard drive (which does show up in Disk Utility) and move things over.

I've gone and deleted my e-mails from my mail folder as for some reason all my latest e-mail files seem to have been stored in a folder named under a long gone e-mail account not my current account (huh?) and for some wierd reason mail has re-created another folder with the same old account name to store a copy of the current e-mails in anyone know 1 how to change this and 2 if it's possible to get a good free prog to recover the deleted files??

Same thing happens to the internal HD on my iBook G4. Sometimes the internal HD works, sometimes not.
I desparately need to find someway to attempt to either fix the external 500GB HD, or recover the files. The 500GB was my main HD, and I have so much very important data that I need to recover (no backups!).
I have years of research (lots of family history), thousands of pictures (many very old), my personal journals that I've been keeping for years, personal information, letters, documents, family videos, and all of my e-mail.
Somebody was telling me that there is special software that will recognize the HD, and allow you to recover the files.
What would you recommend? At the present I have no money to do anything, but will save up for the recovery software. My uncle is getting me a new hard drive, so I'll have that to back up the files when I have the recovery software ...
If my hard drive was "scrubbed" by techs at the genius bar who thought that my computer had a software issue (it didn't) does that mean that a data recovery tool wouldn't be able to find the deleted files?

I went to make a copy of an important drive and accidentally re-formatted it (re-formatted mac journaled, originally mac journaled). The drive contained a bunch of important disk image files which I need to retrieve whole. I'm fairly confident that the files are still there and only the table information got overwritten, as the re-format took about 30 seconds. None of the recovery software I've seen however, can retrieve .dmg files, or such large files (these are up to 32 gb each in size).how I can retrieve these disk image files?

I just reinstalled Mac OS X in my mac mini - new hard drive (320GB) and I wanted to try the FileVault feature for once.... but I get a message saying that my home folder is not in a Mac Extended FS.
I checked the Disk Utility and I have only 1 partition formatted with Mac Extended FS (Case Sensitive).
Is there a special setup to enable FileVault? (I'm new to this stuff)
I recently did a fresh OS install of my mac. I knew that everything was safely backed up on my external drive (through time machine). However, for some reason my filevault home folder ISN'T showing up on the external drive. I had some problems after updating the iTunes, and at the end, I decided to use Time Machine. Picked a date before iTunes update, but after finishing, I could not logon. The filevault came with a warning, not able to logon to "my acount name", due to a failure. I'm 100% of the password, and when i try other passwords, it simply shake. I can logon through guest, but all programs, files etc are gone.
Anyone who knows about this...what to do? Is there any way I can collect the information from the Time Machine? When I'm possitive about the right password?
When i just reinstall Lion, there are a few programs missing...iPhoto, iWeb, Garage etc...Should i start installing Snow Leopard, and afterwards the Lion? Dont wanna spend money on the programs that i had earlier through the Snow program...

I have a problem with FileVault on my MacBook Air mid 2013, with yosemite 10.10.1 installed. On initial setup I turned on encrypting and it finished in an hour. But then I realized it uses too much energy and tried to turn it off, but it said the encryption is not finished and i need to connect to the power adapter. I've done it, but nothing happened. Even though the progress bar shows it's finished, I can't now turn it off.

Trying to turn on FileVault I get a message saying:
There isn't enough space on your hard disk to turn on FileVault. Turning on FileVault requires an additional 132.2 GB of free space on the volume "Macintosh HD". Try emptying the Trash or deleting files you don't need.
Finder says that hard drive "Macintosh HD" has a capacity of 499.76 GB and that 180.42 GB are available. Am I to understand that to run FileVault I would need 312.62 GB (132.2 + 180.42 GB) empty on a 499.76 GB hard drive?! Seems crazy! Might this be related to Parallels 6 or something?
I just enabled filevault for my macbook pro, I was worried about it while on campus and traveling and wanted an added layer of security. Now my powerpoints won't work, they won't even load, this only happened since enabling powerpoint yesterday. Is there anything I can do to make it work or do I need to disable filevault?
