OS X Mavericks :: FileVault Encryption Failure / Error -69774

Dec 8, 2014

I used File Vault to do an drive encryption and the encryption process failed.

Now I receive the "do not enter" gray screen at startup and cannot load OS Mavericks,

and am essentially locked out of my computer since the encryption process failed.

I've tried holding "CMD+R" to do a disk repair. Disk was okay.

I've tried holding "CMD+R" to do a restore from Time Machine. Destination (main) disk is locked and will not take my password (which is correct).

I've tried holding "CMD+R" to do a clean install. Destination (main) disk is locked and will not take my password.

I have tried using Terminal command diskutil corestorage unlockVolume UUID -stdinpassphrase which returns: "Logical Volume successfully unlocked. Error: -69774: Couldn't bring the new Core Storage Logical Volume online"

So I am locked out. I cannot restore with Time Machine. I cannot do a clean install. I'm stumped.

It's a 2009 Mac Pro running 10.9.5 Mavericks.

OS X Yosemite :: FileVault Encryption Is Stuck - How To Stop Or Make It Finish

Dec 2, 2014

I upgraded to Yosemite. On the setup screen after installation, I foolishly said "yes" to "would you like to use Filevault to encrypt your hard drive." Since then, it has been stuck at the encryption stage. It keeps going back and forth between "estimating time remaining" and "X days remaining"

I'm unable to turn off Filevault at this stage. It tells me it needs to finish encrypting first. When I run a system report, it shows this:

The really annoying part is that the CPU and the full-speed fan are consuming battery power like crazy. I go from 100% to 0% in less than an hour and a half. So I need to be tethered to a power outlet most of the day.

how can I stop it, or make it finish the encrypt?

OS X Yosemite :: FileVault Encryption Paused Because It Thinks Power Adapter Not Connected

Dec 4, 2014

Was activating FileVault on a new MacBook Pro until I received a message that it paused because it thinks the power adapter is not connected...even though it was. I unplugged the power adapter for about 12 seconds and then plugged it back in. But the error message persists. FileVault hasn't completed its process and not generated an encryption / recovery key. If I reboot do I risk being unable to access my Mac?

OS X :: Secure Mac - Encryption Petition - Passwords - Security

Aug 24, 2010

Right, I want to secure my mac. Firstly, i understand a boot up BIOS password doesn't password the hard drive (i.e. you just take the hard drive out and someone can access all your documents). Is there any point in having a boot up password? The password that you set in security settings. Can you make it so that it cannot be removed by a system reset or password remover etc. Encrypted petition of the hard drive. This seems like the best option. Could i have say 20Gb of my hard drive encrypted, so that if someone stole my hard drive, documents stored in this petition could not be accessed. How would i go about this. And time capsule. How do i ensure that if someone steels my time capsule the data on it is secure and encrypted?

MacBook Air :: Encryption Paused - Connect Power Adapter To Resume Encryption

Dec 6, 2014

Why cant I resume the encryption. I connect the power and nothing happens. I retart with power added and I get a "Calculating time remaining" then right back to the title message. I just bought this Macbook Air and already this issue has happened and its drawing quite a bit of battery power. Also Apps using significant energy shows "Reverting from Filevault"...this does not look good on Mac

OS X V10.7 Lion :: 10.7.4 Breaks WEP Encryption?

Upgraded to 10.7.4 today, and now, when trying to authenticate to existing WEP networks, OSX is mistakenly recognizing them as WEP Enterprise encryption.  These networks still work fine on my Droid using normal WEP, so I can confirm that the network was not reconfigured.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Turn Off Encryption And Reformat Disk

Jun 19, 2012

OS-X Lion I now have two useless FW800 external disk drives because I cannot turn off encryption and reformat the disk. (30 years ago, in DOS, this was called a "low level format".) I think I need to use Terminal commands diskutil eraseDisk or diskutil partitionDisk but nether of those commands work. Apparently, I cannot format the command correctly or diskutil cannot remove an encrypted partition.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Disc Encryption Within Finder

Jun 30, 2014

When I try to use the disc encryption feature in Finder for a flash drive (from the sidebar), it asks for a password which I have done.

However, this encryption method for a flash drive is not working after I put in the password - a window informing me that a 'GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required' appears. I don't know what this means.

I'm trying this on a MacBook Pro (OS 10.8.2) with a SanDisk flash drive (32 GB, MacOS Extended format).

OS X V10.7 Lion :: 2 Log-in Screens After Turning Filevault 2 On In Mac?

May 6, 2012

I turned file-vault on in Mac OSX Lion 10.7.3 and now I am presented with log-in screens 2 times whenever I reboot my mac. First log-in screen comes immediately, is a light gray screen with filevault-enabled users, so I enter my password there and after some time I am presented with a second normal log-in screen, dark gray with all users. After entering my password in this second login screen, I am able to use my mac.

I am wondering if this 2 log-in screens is the normal behavior after turning on the filevault 2 on in Mac OSX Lion?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Turned FileVault On But Mac Hangs After Login

Mar 22, 2012

I've just turned File Vault on on my MacBook Pro 13". I've followed all the steps: noting the FileVault Key, storing it into Apple and restarting my Mac. When my Mac has started, it has asked me for my login, and everything goes OK until the moment my desktop appears. At that moment in time, my Mac hangs, and I get the "colourful beach ball" and nothing seems to happen. I do have a backup on my Time Machine and I can format the disk and start over, but I don't understand why my Mac is freezing just because I've turned FileVault on.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: 420 GB FileVault Sparsebundle Fills Up Disk?

May 21, 2012

i do have an urgent problem with my macbook pro. for some days its tellingme that my startup disk is full. therefore i cleared about 14 gb of space from the 500 gb disk. next day i controlled via get info and i could literally see the space being used up again in ca 40 min. so i googled around via my phone since the mac did not show any websites anymore...

so i know now that it is not the time macine since i do not use it as also any idisk or any other backup software/hardware

i downloaded grandperspective and found this sparsebundle file of incredible 418Gb size made of many many numbered files of 8,4MB each fromca 10 different dates since i have the mac.

i am new to mac and an old dos user therefore i do not know how this bundle is designed or if i can delete files of this band folder. i googled that this file is from FileVault and therefore reconstructed everytime i log out. i do at times hard reset the mac(5secs power button) when its not as fast as i want or blocked by too great 3d files i work onold dos habit. could these be leftovers?

please please help me with this issue since i have to work and like that the beautiful mac doesnt even open up websites..

OS X V10.7 Lion :: FileVault 2 And Disk Speed Tests

Jun 23, 2012

I have had FileVault 2 enabled on my MacBook Air (late 2010) and have been running regular disk speed tests using Blackmagic.

This week I bought a new 2GHz Air with 256GB disk and ran Blackmagic, which showed impressive 453/404 MB/s speeds. All well and good. Then I switched on FileVault 2 and decided to repeat the test to see if there was any speed degredation as a result of the encryption. Now I get an error message that the Air's disk is "read only" and Blacmagic cannot run. If I had had problems on the old Air I would have assumed FV2 was the culprit.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Unlocking Filevault 2 Partition In Restore Mode?

Feb 6, 2012

I've enabled Filevault 2 on my Lion primary HD. When scanning my disk with Disk Utility, it tells me that I it needs to be repaired and that I need to reboot my Mac and hold CMD+R keys, then enter Disk Utility in "restore mode" of Lion. So that's what I do: I restart my Mac and enter restore mode. Now, to fix my drive, I need to unlock it. In Disk Utility, the disk is greyed out and when clicking on it, a "unlock" button appears at the top. I've tried every possible password I know (including the restore key), but I'm UNABLE to unlock my HD.

Funny thing is that I know my password is right, because I can select the Change password feature in the File menu and it works well. But the new password can't unlock the hard drive! when Filevault 2 is enabled, how can I unlock the drive to scan and repair it? Is there a bug in this feature?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Enabling FileVault On An External Drive Without Erasing Its Data?

Jun 11, 2012

Since I activated FileVault 2 on my Mac boot drive without initializing it, I'd assume that the same thing could be done for any other drive. I've got some external drives with hundreds of GB of data which I'd like to encrypt. Disk Utility lets do it by erasing the drive and encrypting the data written afterwards.

Is there any hidden feature that allows one to convert the drive without erasing it first, like the FileVault utility did for the boot drive (even when working on it!)?
