MacBook Pro :: Should I Use FileVault To Encrypt Drive?
Jun 29, 2010
Or are there better ways to do this? I read about some disadvantages and I won't be able to use file sharing with windows. I want to make sure my data's protected if my MBP got stolen.

I would like to use FileVault to encrypt both my hard drive and time machine back up external drive. Does encryption noticeable slow down the computer.

I have a requirement to encrypt the whole of my boot drive and my mobile Time Machine backup drive that I shall be taking with me on travels. I know I can use FileVault, which will give me an encrypted disk image but I don't like the reliability of sparse images and need the whole of the boot drive to be encrypted. I have tried Truecrypt to encrypt the TM disk, but could not get Time Machine to see it. I've been looking at the Checkpoint Full Disk Encryption product. What I'm trying to find out is if I can encrypt a USB HD with it, but seem to be going round in loops between Checkpoint and resellers.

I want to use TrueCrypt to encrypt an external drive. I understand the new version of FileVault can do this but I prefer not to upgrade to Lion. I'd rather wait till Mountain Lion comes out later this year.
For those who have used both...Just wondering how TrueCrypt compares to FileVault in regards to encrypting an external drive. Also, I am trying to install or execute the PGP Signature to ensure that the TrueCrypt software that I am downloading from the TrueCrypt's Web site is authentic and has not been hacked.
How do I run or install it? I double-click on the PGP Signature file, a window pops up and says it cannot find an application to open it. I even tried removing the ".sig" from the end of the file name and it say it cannot open the disk image.
There are instructions on the TrueCrypt web site for Windows users but none for the Mac users that I can see.

Trying to turn on FileVault I get a message saying:
There isn't enough space on your hard disk to turn on FileVault. Turning on FileVault requires an additional 132.2 GB of free space on the volume "Macintosh HD". Try emptying the Trash or deleting files you don't need.
Finder says that hard drive "Macintosh HD" has a capacity of 499.76 GB and that 180.42 GB are available. Am I to understand that to run FileVault I would need 312.62 GB (132.2 + 180.42 GB) empty on a 499.76 GB hard drive?! Seems crazy! Might this be related to Parallels 6 or something?

Since I activated FileVault 2 on my Mac boot drive without initializing it, I'd assume that the same thing could be done for any other drive. I've got some external drives with hundreds of GB of data which I'd like to encrypt. Disk Utility lets do it by erasing the drive and encrypting the data written afterwards.
Is there any hidden feature that allows one to convert the drive without erasing it first, like the FileVault utility did for the boot drive (even when working on it!)?

I had used FileVault 2 on the entire drive and had later deleted all contents. After changing my mind, I used SoftTote Data recovery for mac to retrieve the deleted files. So now I have a bunch of reconstructed .dbf files and such, but I don't know how to access them. Any better way to retrieve the data I regretted deleting?

Decided to encrypt my external backup drive. Instead, I essentially doubled my memory by duplicating my external hard drive and adding it to my MacBook. Now my startup disk is full and I'm stuck. I also have Time Machine but not sure how to restore (replace?) my Mac storage to what it was two hours ago.

I had some problems after updating the iTunes, and at the end, I decided to use Time Machine. Picked a date before iTunes update, but after finishing, I could not logon. The filevault came with a warning, not able to logon to "my acount name", due to a failure. I'm 100% of the password, and when i try other passwords, it simply shake. I can logon through guest, but all programs, files etc are gone.
Anyone who knows about this...what to do? Is there any way I can collect the information from the Time Machine? When I'm possitive about the right password?
When i just reinstall Lion, there are a few programs missing...iPhoto, iWeb, Garage etc...Should i start installing Snow Leopard, and afterwards the Lion? Dont wanna spend money on the programs that i had earlier through the Snow program...

Is there anyway to encrypt incoming traffic so people wouldn't know what I am downloading? I have an airport extreme base station and am wondering if it is possible to do it through that. If not, what would be the best software way to do this? Now, since illegally downloading is bad

I have about 2TB of data on an external hard drive, which is connected by Firewire cable to my MacBook Pro. I am running Lion 10.7. One folder (and ONLY one folder) on the external drive contains documents with private data. I want to encrypt the folder, but not the entire hard drive. I tried System Utilities > New Image to create an encrypted disk image, but it seems to want to encrypt the entire image instead of just one folder. how to encrypt just one folder and the documents it contains, either with a proprietary Apple tool or with a reliable 3rd party tool?

I just enabled filevault for my macbook pro, I was worried about it while on campus and traveling and wanted an added layer of security. Now my powerpoints won't work, they won't even load, this only happened since enabling powerpoint yesterday. Is there anything I can do to make it work or do I need to disable filevault?

So I have some sensitive documents in a folder on my Mac that I'd like to restrict access to. Is there a way to password protect a single folder within Finder so that people using my Mac cannot view the contents?Seems like it should be an easy thing to do, but it doesn't look like I have that option.

I'd like to encrypt my Mail folder in my Library. Is this possible? I'm not worried about other users on my mac, but if it is stolen, I'd like to know my emails cannot be accessed. I have TrueCrypt which I've used for files that I have created. It is quick and easy. But I'm not sure if this is compatible with an application like Mail which has a default file system. I've also hear that there may be issues later with mail if you try and search for emails once you've encrypted the folder.

I would really love some help with this; I've been banging my head against the wall trying to achieve something that is seemingly so simple and basic.
We want to use an Email app that will allow us to encrypt only ONE email folder. Access to the rest of the email should be open to all users of the computer, just the one folder needs to be encrypted or password protected. Apparently this is not possible in Outlook, because in Outlook for Mac all of the folders are now integrated into one database and so cannot be encrypted individually as they can on PC.
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to achieve this? I am considering using Mac's Mail, but can't find Mail file structure on my Lion machine to see if I can access the individual mailboxes separately. Does anyone know where to find Mail's folder structure? I looked in the Library but found nothing for Mail, as it used to be in previous OSs. Am open to third party software work arounds, other email clients, whatever.

I have a recent Macbook Air that has file vault 2 installed. I reset my password this morning, but cannot remember it at all this afternoon. I have all my files backedup so I am not worried about data loss. So I went to do a reinstall from the recovery partition and its asking me for my password... which is the password I do not know. I also do not remember putting the recovery key down anywhere (stupid I know).
How can I just reinstall Mavericks on the system now?

My question is related to using cascading ciphers to encrypt files (specifically using Truecrypt.) I am considering using Serpent > Twofish > AES.
I've heard a couple of different theories on this approach:
1. The resulting encryption will only be as strong as the weakest algorithm.
2. The resulting encryption will be as strong as the strongest algorithm.
Which theory is right?
Truecrypt uses the same passphrase for each cascading cipher. I've ben thinking that as soon as one cipher is cracked (probably the one which was used last in the encryption sequence) the plain text passphrase would be able to be simply used against the remaining two ciphers. Am I right?
Finally, is Truecrypt encrypting the data with one cipher, then encrypting the resulting encrypted data with another cipher, and then another? Or are the three ciphers being used to encrypt different sections of data?

I have two G-Raid Thunderbolt RAID disks. Each is set up as a RAID 1 stripe (2 disks into one volume). I have my system disk encrypted with filevault, and would like to enable full disk encryption for the external disks as well. I tried the "Right click on disk in finder, select encrypt" option, but after I enter my choice of PW, I just get the error:
"A partition, not a whole disk, is required for this operation." Is this possible? Preferably, without formatting my disks all over again and enabling the encrypted FS at that time?

I would like to encrypt only one of the accounts I have associated with MacMail. To do this, I plan to create a new disk image using disk utlity, then dragging the particular Mail account to that folder. Since I don't want to encrypt all accounts, I'm not sure what folders I ought to put into my new encrypted drive image.
In the "homelibrarymailV2" folder, I do see the POP or IMAP folder for the account I want to encrypt, but I was wondering if I also need to add the "Mailboxes" or "MailData" folders that are also there since they seem to have information in them related to my accounts as well.

I have imported a large number of CDs into my iMac, and I realized recently if someone managed to copy the MP3s off of my computer with a simple USB drive, they could steal my entire library! Is there a way to encode my ripped tracks with DRM to force iTunes to check if the computer is authorized to play them? I think I remember there was an early version of iTunes that allowed you to encrypt your own tracks with FairPlay DRM.

I used to sign and encrypt my emails digitally and then send them to people. I had two email certificates from Comodo, and it's been a while they're expired. so I renewed my certificates and deleted the old ones from my keychain, then downloaded and added the new ones. The trouble is I no longer get the digitally sign the message and encrypt the message button when I compose a new email.
