Hopefully someone can help me. This is my current setup:

Plato is my iPod - I use 40GB for music, the rest for backing up files.
Wittgenstein is my backup. I exclude backups of ~/Music, another big DIR and ~/Movies and it has room to backup everything else.
I also have an 8GB USB stick that I've named "mnemosyne".
What I am purchasing. I am waiting for my new 500GB 7200 drive to arrive, which will replace the current 500GB main drive. I also purchased a 32GB flash drive.
What I'm getting in the near future. I'm purchasing a 1TB or 1.5TB internal drive and building an external HDD from it within the next two weeks. I'd like to split it to 500GB for backups, the rest for media storage. I'd like to encrypt my current /System dir, my ~/Documents and all preferences from my my Applications.
I've heard filevault is prone to errors. Is this true? Are there any other full disk encryption options for mac? Would dm-crypt work through macports without corrupting my filesystem? Can I use truecrypt and create an encrypted container of say (what is now) ~/Documents
Creating the partition scheme

1) Can I resize a partition once I've created it if there's physical space left on the HDD?
2) Should I leave some space without a partition? Or should I just name it something benign and use it as a "dropbox"
3) What options do I have for encryption on a mac?
4) Is filevault prone to errors? Any benchmarking tests out there?
5) Can I use dm-crypt through macports and have a FDE setup that won't fail because it's through macports and not native? In other words, I realize all encryption schemes can fail, but I'd like to minimize risk.
6) How would I have some movies on my main HDD and others on the external volume? Is that possible? Or would I need to create two partitions for that? So, say, I want to store 40GB of everything that is currently in ~/Movies on my main HDD. Just create a partition for that, and then another partition on the external volume at 210GB?
7) How do I create separate partitions in mac?
8) How do I easily mount all partitions from all hard drives?
9) Is rsync and a script my best option for encrypting backups since Timemachine has no security whatsoever for backups?
10) What filesystem should I use? (I'm only using OS X on my macbook)
11) Any sample partition map you could share with me that will help me build this properly?
12) How do I set up a link so Mac OS X will read the partitions like they are now and display over on the left side of Finder.app as they show now? I.e. a list of Desktop, $username, Applications, Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures

May 15, 2012Long time itunes user and have never had any issues creating a smart playlist untill recently. I have a large libary 16,500+, am a itunes match user, and do use icloud. For the last couple weeks any time i try to create a smart playlist the results are always empty. I have tried simple requests like artist contain so and so, genre is rock, time is over 1:00 etc etc and nothing will populate. Also if i edit and old smart playlist by adding another condition it wipes it out for example i have a playlist with rock songs if i add the condition to only have songs over 1 minute i get an empty set. I'm sure it is a simple solution but i can not figure out what i have done. Only major changes i have made recently are getting an ipad and joining itunes match other than that i have made no changes to my settings or network (at least that i know of).

I tried closing it, doesn't work.
I got a message from a filevault for my hard drive space, tried it instead of skipping it, and after opening again, my free space was there...but I got something called a sparseimage that now takes 60Gb! What is that, How do I get my memory back?
I saw on your site how to deactivate it but when I tried, it ask me to free up 45Gb to be able to deactivate filevault...I don't have 45Gb left !
So how do I empty trash without closing the computer?
And how do I get my memory back?
OS X :: Mounted Sparseimage File Size Wrong
Jan 9, 2010My external HD crashed, with my complete iTunes library on it . I needed CPR. Then I thought: no problems, I have my trusty backup. So I whipped out my other HD with a 30Go .sparseimage on it. I use CCC to do my incremental backups of my library, un-encrypted (i.e. I do not encrypt it). I mount it... and what do I get? The right files, except 300Mb instead of 30Gb! I tried to restore via Disk Utility, with the same result: a 300 Mb file...
Here's some info/weirdness that might help:
- I'm on OS X 10.4 Tiger
- I verified the disk image with Disk Utility - all OK
- I copied the image (the whole 30Gb of it) on a fresh HD, and mounted it. The root folder on the mounted image resides in /private/temp/ccc_dmg_mount.e7h4Mt. Is that normal?
- If I look at the image info (via apple-I or Disk Utility) it gives me a total capacity of 268 GB, which is the size of the HD it resides on! Is that normal?

Mar 25, 2007I put a sparseimage file in the trash and then shut down my machine. I can't log in with that user name, so I've been unable to access the trash to undelete it. Any ideas on how to fix this mistake?

I want to delete a previous account and create a new one. Unfortunately, when I go to System Preferences > Accounts, it is blank! It is completely empty, devoid of anything but a title that says Accounts. I have tried the following: Restarting; trying to access it on a different account; accessing Accounts through the help viewer, View menu, right-click on it's Dock icon, and through Spotlight search. In all cases, I get a blank Accounts screen. Also of note, the usually illuminated "Back" button on the upperleft isn't illuminated. All that's illuminated is the "Show All" button, which takes me back to System Preferences. I Verified Disk permissions. I tried to Verify Disk and discovered that it says it needs repair. This may or may not be the cause, but for now I can't use my Install CD because the drive is broken. (It keeps spitting out all CDs/DVDs I put in.)

ITunes :: Sync Contacts Empty And Sync Mail Accounts Empty/dimmed?
Apr 11, 2012I use iCloud for syning Mail & Notes. Contacts, Calendars and Documents & Data. I am 100% sure that in the past in iTunes/Info tab "Sync contacts" and "Sync Mail Accounts" showed all my different Address Book groups and different email account to be synced. Since recently they seem disappeared and I only see my different Calendars to be synced. Why are both Sync contacts empty and Sync Mail Accounts both emtpy/dimmed. BTW if I check Sync contacts I get a message that they are synced through iCloud etc. etc. Now if I enable on my Mac another email account in Apple Mail it is not added to my iPhone/iPad anymore. How can I change that ?Â

Aug 30, 2010I have been creating multiple encrypted .dmg's from folders of various sizes (and selecting the "read/write" option to allow changes.
What determines how much I can add to one of my created .dmg's? Sometimes when I try adding a file it says right off the bat that the .dmg is full. Other times I am able to add gigs until it says it's full.
Is there any way I can make an unlimited space .dmg and just keep adding to it?

Jul 18, 2010I'm in a situation where I have a file (specifically, a pages document) that I want to encrypt with a password, and in the best of cases, hide it from spotlight searches and such.Any ideas on how to achieve this? Please consider that I have to constantly open, view and edit the archive at times, so a disk image, zip or rar file won't work for me.
I thought FileVault, but I don't really want all of my files with password, and it gave me the "not enough space on disk error" when I tried to do it anyways.I'm assuming this service is available in the OS itself, but I haven't been able to find it just yet. Or can anyone tell me of a program that allows that option without having to leave Finder?
OS X V10.4 :: Hdiutil Create Srcdevice Fails To Create Image
Feb 1, 2012I want to create a disk image of a Mac drive (.dmg file).I figured that it might not be a good idea to try and image a live disk, so I unmounted it (the user dragged the disk icon to the eject icon), and I confirmed it was unmounted by looking at /Volumes. To be clear here, this isn't the boot volume, that is /dev/disk0./dev/disk1 is an internal drive - as it happens it's the original drive for this OSX 10.4 G5, AND /Volumes/HITACHI is the mount point for an external USB drive.I have tried this twice.On both occassions, things seemed to go well, but after a few minutes (about 10 - 20 minutes), I observed that the target file on /Volumes/HITACHI stopped growing, then a bunch of unpleasant stuff started to happen:
* I did lsof /Volumes/HITACHI/MacHD_20120201.dmg and found the PID of the diskimage binary, ps waux showed it was doing nothing (CPU% was 0.0). This indicates a stuck process to me.
* The hdutil command stopped producing '.'
* I could not cancel the hduitl command
* I could not rm the MacHD_20120201.dmg file
* I could not ls the /Volumes/HITACHI directory
* unlink also hung
A little further into this, the Mac became unresponsive. I observed that the disk was now mounted again (grrr!). As a work around I switched the USB drive off and on, and Mac came good - all my terminals started to respond, the GUI responded for the user.My workaround has been to use CCC to make a clone of the disk - but I don't like this because I think .dmg files are much more convenient (for a start, now that I've used CCC I can't use the USB drive for anything else).
* Is my methodology wrong? Do I really need to umount the /dev/disk1
* Can you disable finder from automounting an internal hard drive (I am particularly interested in this)Â

OS X :: How Unsecure Is Empty Trash Compared To Secure Empty Trash?
Aug 31, 2009I moved a bunch of files to the trash can after installing Snow Leopard, mainly backup files from OmniFocus.
I clicked Secure Empty Trash and over 500,000 items began deleting. These 500,000+ items deleted at the rate of 2-3 items a second. This would total 138 hours equaling over 5 days to Secure Empty the trash.
This is just ridiculous in my option so I just did the "Empty Trash" feature, showing me only 350 items, which deleted quickly in under 5 minutes...
So far I know with Secure Empty Trash that the trash is securely layered with 0's & 1's....but wonder what happens with just "Empty Trash?"
How easily accessible is it for someone to retrieve something that i've deleted?

I like Bento and just upgraded to Bento 2 but there is no password protection. I have a password to log onto my Mac but I know it's not 100% secure and I'm looking for security as high as 448 bit. A password vault type of program would be nice but I want something that has additional database features. I have done a lot of work on Google but have not been able to find anything.

Oct 24, 2010my roommate and I want to put together a Mac- or Linux-based file server. I have an old iBook lying around, so it can either run Mac OS X 10.3, or some version of Yellow Dog Linux. (I'd prefer to keep it a Mac system.) I can set up our router to push requests on a certain port to that laptop, with a static IP, but we're concerned with file safety. We're going to be keeping all our personal information on there including any code projects, pictures, homework, etc. My roommate attends university, and will be accessing the server from the uni. wireless network. As such, privacy/encryption is a big concern for us. (We don't want people packet sniffing and getting any personal information or data.)
Does anyone have any suggestions for setting up this kind of server? Hopefully it will be a fun project.

May 9, 2012I decided not to use just one partition with my disk because i wanted to separte important documents from the OS and apps so reformated my disk with 2 partitions 1 for OS and apps and one for docs. I also wanted to keep the docs partition secure so it was my intention to use filevault... however it learned that file vault would only work on my whole disk and not on a sigle volume. At least thats the only option i get when i go to "Turn on FileVault" in the Security and Privacy of system preferences. So what i tried next was to reformat the "docs" partition i have created using the Mac OS extended (journaled) encrypted option. This option seemed to work but after formating the partition, I could not mount the volume.
Question is: what is the best way for what i am trying to do and how to do it.
a) is there a way to use FileVault on a single volume instead of the whle disk?
b) alternatively, how to format an encrypted partition and mount it?

Sep 3, 2010Are any of you having this problem? Yesterday I installed the most recent patch from Apple in my Macbook Pro, can�t remember the number of it, sorry about that. Today I noticed a serious fault in my computer. When I�m trying to access any website that is supposed to be encrypted (ie. Paypal, banks, etc) they aren�t encrypted or are only partially encrypted. I am pretty sure that this wasn�t happening before. I haven�t installed any software recently and everything was working fine until yesterday, the day I installed the security update. So I guess it�s not a coincidence. When I try it on Firefox the websites are not encrypted and when I try it on Safari I get a warning from Safari saying that it can�t recognise the certificate or that is invalid. Any of you have experienced this?

Mar 21, 2009My imac g3 with os 9.2.2 wont connect to my wireless network when its encrypted, it just says "an error occurred while trying to join network". When I remove the password it connects just fine, and when I switch to my os x partition it connects just fine with or without a password. Can anyone tell me why os 9 doesnt like the password lock?
