It's idle curiosity at this stage, but something that I wondered about.

I just purchased a new MBA. I thought that the 256GB SSD would work for me, but, it doesn't. Now I'm attempting to find the least expensive way in which to upgrade the internal drive.
As I was about to purchase a new 512GB SSD, the reseller informed me that I should try the Seagate drive referenced above. He said that it would work in the MBA with no problem. The price difference is huge. Axiom SSD = $1500, Momentus Hybrid SSD = $120. I'm not concerned about speed. I'm just tired of carrying my itunes library on an external USB drive.
I love the new MBA. I just need more disk space in the unit. Here's a link to the drive in question: [URL]
After I got my MBP, I upgraded to the Seagate Momentus XT, and everything was fantastic.I know this may sound crazy, but today I upgraded my RAM to 8GB, and ever since, the XT is SO much louder and I can really feel the vibration. Do you think I may have shifted it while replacing the RAM? Is there something I can do to make it quieter again?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been creating multiple encrypted .dmg's from folders of various sizes (and selecting the "read/write" option to allow changes.
What determines how much I can add to one of my created .dmg's? Sometimes when I try adding a file it says right off the bat that the .dmg is full. Other times I am able to add gigs until it says it's full.
Is there any way I can make an unlimited space .dmg and just keep adding to it?
I'm in a situation where I have a file (specifically, a pages document) that I want to encrypt with a password, and in the best of cases, hide it from spotlight searches and such.Any ideas on how to achieve this? Please consider that I have to constantly open, view and edit the archive at times, so a disk image, zip or rar file won't work for me.
I thought FileVault, but I don't really want all of my files with password, and it gave me the "not enough space on disk error" when I tried to do it anyways.I'm assuming this service is available in the OS itself, but I haven't been able to find it just yet. Or can anyone tell me of a program that allows that option without having to leave Finder?
i'm having trouble decompressing this multi part (.zip and .z01-.z03) files becuase i eitehr get an issue with the file not beinga supported archive or something along those lines usually.
ive tried about 6 different decompression applications without much luck. i have a password for the files but havent been prompted to use it.
Does anyone have recommendations for MacOS (10.6) backup software that meets the following?
I am also interested to learn if rsync (or even better -- an rsync front end) is capable of doing all these things?
*** Gotta haves ***
- STABLE & Proven
- Encrypted backups (AES-128 or better)
- Ability to backup filevault user data, while user is logged in
- Ability to exclude filevault sparse images
- Decent scheduling capabilities
- Allows file/folder/volume exclusions and/or includes
- Backup of clients on the network (prefer multi-platform)
- Some level of file/media validation
Can you guys let me know which flash drives work with the macbook air without the need for a dongle?

I'm installing the Samsung SpinPoint drive tonight and was curious. Does the sudden motion sensor still function properly? The reviews on Newegg don't seem sure. One guy thinks it still works, but he simply
no longer hears it, and another is convinced that without the clicking sound that comes with moving the MBP, it's simply not functioning.
In my current dual 800mhz PowerMac G4, I have two 80gb hard drives which were ordered from Apple (didn't know better at the time). Will I be able to put them in my Mac Pro when it comes in a few weeks, or are they too old to be compatible?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to thank all of you who have contributed to this forum. Based on the comments made, because I am on a tight budget, I have ordered a quad 2.8 ghz, 320g drive, 2gb ram, ATI 2600 card. Also bought additional 4gb ram.Reasons for this configuration are statements that quad is very fast, and Barefeats tests showing 2600 card faster than NVIDEA 8800 card for programs based on Apple graphics core. The 8800 appears to be faster for games, but I don't play them.I am using the MacPro for Microsoft Office, Firefox, Aperture and Photoshop. Also use Fusion to run Quickbooks and a variety of important PC software not available on the Mac.

Can time machine work on multiple drives?
Currently, I have time machine backing up my iMac on to an external drive.
I also have a third drive filled with movies and music. I would like to set iTunes to play directly off of that drive but I don't want to risk losing that stuff.
Can I set time machine to back up my iMac on HD2 AND ALSO back up HD3 to HD4?
I am here because I am interested in buying my first Mac Laptop. I would be mainly using this in my High School during Lunch and Study hall to work on projects and research. My school only uses Apple computers so I don't think there will be a networking problem(heard there can be some unfriendly networks towards macs?). I have been looking into THIS I Book sold used by [URL]it dose not have a airport card (I dont know what that is) and the CD drive doesn't work but that doesn't bother me because I mainly use flash drives and SD cards.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running my Macbook Pro at work through the LAN. My work has a windows 2003 server. Everything has been fine (well just about) until today, when I couldn't get onto any internet sites. It would let me access all of the local work intranet site, but it wouldn't even let me on google. It worked fine yesterday, and all the Win PCs around me were all still up and running. I tried using a different port but to no avail. Also, I am still trying to access my root drives that are on my profile space at work. e.g R:\Venusgroupswbl etc etc. I want to connect to these through my mac.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had an X25-M in my hands yesterday but RMA'd it to newegg and got the Momentus XT (see my thread). Yes, performance is very good but it only remembers your most used apps. I want consistent speed across the board no matter which app it is. Also, the main reason I am returning is I did not think the vibration was too much until I threw my 5400 Hitachi stock drive back into the machine. It's night and day difference. So I'm going to Optibay+X25-M it. Sucks I have to deal with returns and bite the 15% restocking fee on the Momentus XT (and about $12 for cancelling the order for the optibay alternative+ SATA SuperDrive enclosure) in addition to returning the item, but now I know.
View 7 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know what the deal is this this drive? Amazon shows "not yet released"; Newegg keeps pushing their ETA date out day by day, and others don't even list it. Newegg has 5 reviews for the drive, though.Has anyone got the inside scoop on when these things will truly become available? I'm trying to hold off bootcamping my new MBP until I can upgrade the HD; the process of cloning a drive with OS X and Win 7 on it looks to be a 2 step process I was hoping to avoid.

But when I'm doing anything from typing to playing back HD video in FCP, it lags and stutters, then catch up to itself. I did the firmware upgrades to the hard drives, and I have 6GB of RAM. What on EARTH would be causing this? It's driving me crazy! I ordered a Hitachi standard 7200RPM drive to swap into this to see if it's a hard drive issue or a RAM issues, but I'm guessing it's the Momentus.

View 2 Replies View RelatedBeen on these forums browsing around snooping info for a while now. I'm in the market for a 2010 MBP and i am really looking into the SSD's. The downside is there price and the relative small storage space. But now i read some post on a tech website about the seagate momentus XTWhich is a 500Gb HDD @ 7200 RPM with a 4GB flash memory. Now i'm intrested to see what you guys think of this concept would it be a good deal to get this into a MBP or just stick with the 500Gb apple HDD till the price on SSD's drop.

I used a friends 13" Sony Vaio last night, and it felt like a jack hammer, and i was like "Please please please don't be like this"my MBP is 15" (see sig), the momentus is juts 7200 RPM right? not any more than another drive? what are your guys experience with 7200 RPM in MBP's (make sure you state your size)
