I am using a mac, and the rest of the company uses Windows, so I am on my own in terms of figuring out the differences in interface. I know you can right click the folder icon and view the users who have permission to read/write each folder.

We are two persons sharing our MacBook - and we want to share iTunes library, iPhoto-library + a common folder where we store documents like budget planning etc.
We have no problems creating files in the shared folder - but once I have created a file in the shared folder, the other user can only open this in "read-only"-mode. This also happens when I have used the iTunes library or iPhoto-library. After this the other user only has read-only access to the library. It happens with all types of files, e.g. also files created by [URL] pictures created with PaintBrush etc.
I have my music shared on my home network and i would like it if they could not change my files around. Every time i change the settings to Read Only for all of the users/groups it reverts back to Read & Write. How do i go about making my folders read only?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have two users on my mac and am having some issues with sharing files. I created a shared folder and gave the other user read/write permissions. When I log in as that user, the folder can be accessed, but some of the files in that folder cannot be accessed. These are all photos, and for the most part I'm dropping them into the shared folder from iPhoto. Â
I tried it again by using the Public folder with the same result. However, there isn't consistency with the actual files that don't have permission. In other words, the shared folder I created may have a file that does not have permission, but that same file does have permission when I dropped it in the Public folder. So it is totally random as to which files in the shared folder don't have permission to be accessed. Â
I also tried to simply drag the files to the other user. Same result.
In my office we have 5 macs on our desktops (all different, this one's a Mac Pro, there's a G4, a couple of eMacs and an Intel iMac), all connected to a G4 server and sharing data on a network hard disk.
Everything works fine except that in the last couple of weeks a problem has arisen whereby when you click a folder on a network drive to view it in the finder, there is a pause before the contents are shown, of between 5-10 seconds.
This doesn't sound much and it doesn't happen every time you select a folder, but if you're browsing through a lot of files it gets very boring indeed.
I have been unsuccessful in figuring out how to view iCal between computers at home. Can it be set so that updates on one can be viewed automatically on the other? I am wanting it so that it is running unified and not separately between computers. And/ or so that when DH logs in, he sees updates I've made from when I logged in? We have a new iMac (Leopard) and Mac OSX 10.4.11 laptop.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have my Mac Pro connected to my hp c3100 printer. It is shared, all sharing options are enabled on the Mac Pro. 2 Macbooks and an iMac cannot find or see this printer. Networking, screensharing, file transfers, they all work fine. Just can't see the printer. Is AppleTalk required to do this? Here's some screenshots from the Mac Pro. I have never tried to network a printer in Leopard, I seem to remember it was easier in Tiger.

How to automatically mount other Macs on the network, or if not, then post an explanation here on how to accomplish that objective?Â
For example, my Mac Pro tower has 4 disks and when I boot up all 4 disks are mounted. Then, when I turn on my Macbook Air and turn on my MacBook Pro, those laptops show up in Finder as shared. The Macbook Pro is partitioned, so it would be nice if I could specify which disk to mount in Finder.
I've got an idea for an application that will expand upon the idea of a "shared network drive". Initial release will not include a "web app" per se, it would only include computers connected to the same network. Long-term though I would like to have a web interface similar to that of DropBox. What sort of technologies would I need in order to implement this? Objective-C? Things like, "right-click" menu modification, accessing hard-drives of other computers on the network running the same application.

I would like to make some of these partitions able to be seen from another machine on the same network. After downloading a few new apps tonight, both off the App Store and Safari, I noticed that s6761bm0t3r1 had been newly listed under shared.
One of the apps i downloaded ended up changing my homepage and search engine which was annoying but not too unusual.
After changing things back to usual I went to look through finder to see if anything unwanted had been downloaded and that's when i noticed it. I know it's not my printer because i turned my printer on and it showed up under a different nameI have never had any other machines connect like this to my mac that i know of besides my printerWhen i try to click more info it just keeps on fetching and won't show anythingWhen i try to double click on it it tries to connect and soon after says Connection failedI don't know if it's from something i downloaded but I first noticed it immediately afterwards so I'm thinking it is

I have my iMac and PC connected to each other through the ethernet. The iMac is set to read/write the shared network volumes on my PC. The Finder is used to set up the SMB connection. Everything works fine. Mac applications are able to read and write files to the PC.
However, after a day or so (during which the PC has been kept on, while the Mac has slept) problems occur. It seems as if it is possible to access the network volumes and even view the root directory. However, clicking on any directory will show a blank directory.
I have the most recent iMac and Macbook Pro on my home network. I'm sharing files between machine and both are using WiFi through a Linksys Router. I have video files (avi's) on one machine that I'm playing on the other machine. The files play no problem but their is an intermittent halting. I probably wouldn't call it a stutter exactly. It stops playing and the screen halts at a particular frame, and then after a bit it starts playing again. I'm wondering if this is normal behaviour or if I have something setup incorrectly on my network. Also, I'm wondering what the solution to this is other than copying the files from one machine to the other.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am a new intern with a small company and am trying to connect my Macbook Pro's printer settings to our office printer, which is a LanierLD145. We halso have an HP3600 on the same wireless network which my Macbook can detect and print to just fine via the shared network server. However, when I try to find the LanierLD145 I can't find it anywhere on my shared network or via a wireless to connection in order to print to it from my laptop.
I have access to the desktop I believe the printer is routed to the server through and have "shared printer with network" via this computer. However, I still cannot find the LD145 icon on my macbook when I try to connect and print, even when going through the "Windows"-> (shared server) route. I've also installed apple's "general lanier printer driver" in hopes have luck finding the printer if I have the driver installed, but that has not worked either. How I can connect the macbook to the LanierLD145 via my wireless server connection?

I finally got around to changing the way my wirless devices are set-up; instead of using time capsule as my wireless device, I went back to using the linksys wi-fi router (which I'd used prior to time capsule, but now set up as WPA2 if it makes a diff?) with the intent of putting time capsule in another room with my 1TB iTunes library hanging off it. All seemed to work well but I initially had a problem with the TV keep dropping the wi-fi connection. Now connected via ethernet to the linksys, no problem. iTunes streamed okay but I couldn't seem to get time machine to make a back-up - just prepared forever (overnight, still no joy).
So I noticed today that I seemed to have lost permissions on both iTime drive and time capsule. I managed to fix the iTunes drive by connecting direct to my macbook and running disk utility then adding myself again via sharing (hip hip for MRoogle), but I cannot do the same with the time capsule. Even with airport utility and connected via ethernet I can't even get the configuration up - just spins out until it throws an error. Anyone have any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong - I'm assuming it's me as this all worked in the previous set-up...
We are having 20 nos of 3.06ghz intel core i3 imac with 10.6.4 mac os x and it is bind with Active directory, if the user move the folder inside the network shared drive smb(ntfs) it is prompting for macintosh administrator user id and password. sometimes it is moving without any issue.

i accidentally set permissions in the Mac HD Info window for Everyone to "No Access". of course it locked up. i have an external drive plugged in running Time Machine. i understand i can use that to restore...?
I ran disk utility - it failed because it could not locate the clip art folder in word (?wha?) repair disk permissions ran for 24 hours and couldn't complete. anyway - I know there is an easy solution here - i just want to be sure i'm doing it correctly so i dont make it worse than it already is...would some kind soul please provide me step-by-step instructions to either use Time Machine to repair - or something.

When running Repair Permissions in Disk Utility, it reports that there are errors and that it's fixed them but if I run it again, the same errors keep appearing.
I've noticed that the current permissions on the errors are lrw-rw-rw- which I assume means that they are symbolic links and not the actual files which Disk Utility is expecting. Any idea what's going on?
after verifying disc permissions is it necessary to "repair" disc permissions?

Disk Utility says there are a bunch of disk permissions that need repairing. I hit repair and disk utility says that it repaired those disk permissions. But when I verify, it says they still need to be repaired.
