Software :: Shared Printing From Tiger To XP
Apr 27, 2008
After a week or two of hell - first downgrading the Mac to Tiger and the even worse horror of trying to downgrade Vista running on a New HP machine (believe me if you've tried this you'll know exactly what I mean...) I now find I cannot network my Epson CX 5600 (connected to and running on the Mac) to XP. XP will not see it despite the fact I have sharing turned on etc.....
Worse still I spent 2 hours googling this and no matter what I type in I always get the reverse - that the printer is connected to XP.
Fat lot of good the search engines are.....
Can anybody please let me know how I can achieve this aim simply - I had no problem in this regard at all with Leopard.
I tried Apple talk and adding a printer in Printer Setup utility - tried LPD and Windows neighbourhood... nada, seems like Tiger and XP don't wan't to talk to each other

I have already done this successfully with one PC laser printer using the built-in OS X System Preferences utilities. I have tried the CUPS method. I do not know what uname/pword combo it wants. There is only one account on this machine and no password. That combination is unacceptable to CUPS. Give me this info and I'll give CUPS another shot. Through the OS, when I get to the step of selecting the driver from the list, the driver is not listed even though. I just installed it with the original driver disk from the mfr. Is there a way to get the printer driver I installed to show up on the list of available drivers I am offered? My other printer was in the list, connected just fine, and I can print to it with no problems.

Got a iMac running OS 10.6, and am wanting to print from a Samsung ML-1710P printer connected via serial port to a XP PC. Everything seems to all be communicating with each other, except I eventually get a print error on the XP machine in the print manager. Can anyone help with this?
Notes:
- the computer and printer can be seen by the mac.
- when a print job is sent, the mac spools and sends it "ok"
- the XP print manager status changes to "printing" then after about 1 min changes to an error.
- the latest driver for that printer is installed on the XP machine.
- I have tried to use the Generic Postscript Printer driver, the Generic PCL Laser Printer driver and an old Mac OS10.3 driver from the Mac end. There are no newer drivers available. I have shared this successfully printer before, but only from another windows machine.

A couple of months ago I was at the head office and connected to the in house Wifi. When I did, a bunch of shared drives or folders showed in my finder under "Shared". I figured no biggie, when I got away from the head office they'd go away. But they didn't. And I can't figure out how to get rid of them.See attached photo.

I've followed the instructions on the Apple website in relation to adding a Windows shared printer to a Mac [URL] but I still can't get it to work.
When I send a test page to the printer it appears in the Windows print queue and shows 'spooling' as the status. The document never prints.
I really don't know where to go from here, I'm just totally stumped and I've been trying for weeks to get this to work. Has anyone got any ideas?

Made a custom TCP/IP port on the PC. Assigned my Mac's IP address 192.16.1.101 as the location of the printer. Made sure protocol was set to RAW. Everything should work but the print job never makes it to the Mac. The print que on the PC shows error and the print que on the Mac never shows anything. I decided to delete all the printers on the PC, plug it in directly to the printer via usb and let it install the drivers, print test page etc... After that I reconnected the printer to the mac, pc to the network and just changed the port on the printer properties to reflect the IP address. It still didn't work. I can't seem to find any more information on what to do next. The PC is running Win XP and the Mac is on Leopard. Another thing, how does the PC know which printer to use if the Mac has two attached? I disabled sharing on the other printer thinking the PC might have been confused.

Just curious if there is a keyboard out there that has some kind of switch that will toggle between to computers. Not sure if this is even practical or would make sense...
For example, you have laptop and desktop on your desk. In order to save space, you'd like one wireless keyboard on your desk with a switch that allows it to work on either Computer A or Computer B (using different USBs that plug into each computer?).

How do I make sure that all users (with seperate accounts) on my MacBook OS X have full rights to all folders and files (new and old) for the folder Users/Shared?
We are two persons sharing our MacBook - and we want to share iTunes library, iPhoto-library + a common folder where we store documents like budget planning etc.
We have no problems creating files in the shared folder - but once I have created a file in the shared folder, the other user can only open this in "read-only"-mode. This also happens when I have used the iTunes library or iPhoto-library. After this the other user only has read-only access to the library. It happens with all types of files, e.g. also files created by [URL] pictures created with PaintBrush etc.

I set up my Macbook to share to my lowly PC, that was fine, but now I get a bar that says Shared Folder when I access the hard drive in my macbook from my macbook. Its incredibly irritating. I tried to 'fix' it but all I did was disallow permissions to my HD and was unable to access anything, had to re-install OSX to get it to work.
I did a search of the forums, but all I got was how to set up to share a folder, I got that part working fine. This is a picture of my Macbooks hd in Finder this is frustrating me, If i was on a PC something this simple would be easy, but Im still learning the ins and outs of OSX

My wife and I share an iMac with 2 user accounts. If I install some programs while logged into my account, will she have access to them also?
I'd want her to have access to all programs and she is set up as a administrator on the iMac.

My MBP and MacBook don't show up on my "SHARED" sidebar on my Mac Pro, which is running 10.5.8. But the Pro shows up on both laptops, and I can connect to it from both. The Pro shows a PC in the house when it's on, so it's working for that. But I can't get my Macs from it.

What are these "shared" computers? Are they other computers spying on my personal files? (is that even possible?) How can I remove these shared computes and make sure that they don't latch on to my computer again. I changed my airport password but they are still there.

We are trying to connect to the hard drive on another mac in our office. We go to Network > My Network > and we can see the hard drive listed there for the one we want to connect to. It tries to connect w/ msg AFP Connection Status Looking up "machine name" and it never connects. Personal file sharing is on for the machine. Any ideas of what we can try to connect? Out of the 4 MACs here - we just cannot connect to this one.

When I got my Mac Pro I set up my laptop to share files so i could move everything over. Now that is done, I don't have the laptop anymore. But my Mac Pro keeps looking for the shared server every 10 minutes. Here is the dialog box that pops up: "There was a problem connecting to the server Laptop. The server may not exigst of it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again." I would like to have the dialog box stop appearing and looking for the laptop.

My wife and I share a MacBook Pro on Lion, with one user serving us both. But we have separate apple ids, used for iTunes and for logging in to Apple Support discussions. We do not use iCloud presently. In preparation for Mountain Lion, I am considering turning on iCloud in system preferences. It is possible or advisable for us to have two iCloud accounts? I ask that because she has exclusive use of our one iPad and I have exclusive use of our one iMac. Since iCloud facilitates sharing of data among devices, is there any reason to have one iCloud account synching the MBP and the iPad, and another synching the MBP and my iMac?

I have a network consisting of three Macs and a PC running Windows XP. One of my printers (a Canon Pixma MP830) is USB-connected to one of the Macs with sharing turned on. Thus, I am able to print to this device from any of the Macs. How can I access this shared printer from the Windows device? I can't determine an IP address because the printer doesn't have one.

We have a broken networkport on our HP Laserjet P2015dn, and need it to print from 4 macs in the office. 3times osX 10.4.11 and 1time osX 10.6.4 (all except 1 non-intel; running windows XP via Parallels and connected on the general office network). I am currently sharing the printer via USB (broken networkport) connected via a Mac using 10.4.11. I can print from every Mac, obviously. However, I can't print or know how to set this up for use in Windows (parallels).

So basically, I was given a decent windows machine for free, and I'm trying to convert it into a place where all our family's files can be accessed.
However, I'm having a real tough time trying to connect to the windows 7 computer. I've tried Go>Connect to Server and put in "smb://" then the IP address (192.168.1.105 in this case), and I get the error message saying I should check my IP address and contact my system's administrator.
Now, the part that baffles me the most is that in the finder left hand sidebar, I can see the homeserver and the other computer on the network. When I try to connect to either one of them, it takes a good 15 minutes then the computer gives up, even when I connect with the administrator username and password.
Is it a problem with my computer? I've got them all on the same workgroup (MSHOME) and are connected to the same router.

I have installed windows xp and windows vista in my mac by VMware fusion (v 2.0 (116369))I used to access my shared folder from xp by the shortcut on the desktop, but suddenly I can't anymore when I click on the Z: drive (\.host) it gives me this message:
Z:
efers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.
and the weird thing is xp connected to the internet! if its connected to the internet thats mean there is a connection between mac and xp. However, everything is working fine in vista!
I did tried:
Restart windows
Restart Mac
Disconnect / Connect network adapter
Switched the adapter to NAT (which is the default) / Bridge / Host-only nothing happen any idea why is this happening or what am i missing?
