What are these "shared" computers? Are they other computers spying on my personal files? (is that even possible?) How can I remove these shared computes and make sure that they don't latch on to my computer again. I changed my airport password but they are still there.
View 3 Repliesthere's an unknown computer showing up on my shared list.I my get my internet through a wireless router, a BT homehub, and you need a password to get onto the internet.. there are 3 computers in my house connected to that router and they dont even show up under my "shared" list! does this sound like my network is being hacked... and if so how do i protect it (and sorry to say im probably the least technical person when it comes to computers to the simplest explanation would be the best )

However, when I open Finder on my MacBook Pro it shows all shared computers in the area. From my MacBook Pro I can see the shared Mac Air, but nothing in shared of Mac Air. All shared setting on on MacBook Pro. Plus there more shared computers on the network. I think something wrong with Mac Air settings.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI saw all the other threads asking about how to get rid of misc. computers in the shared section in the sidebar. I'm wondering why a computer won't show up and am asking for other ideas since I've exhausted my own. I'm working with a Mac Pro, a Macbook and a Mac mini. The Mac Pro can see everything else, and the Mac Mini can see eveything else, but the Macbook does not see the Mac Pro (even though it does see the Mac mini). I need the Mac Pro to show up on the Macbook.
Here's what I've done:
updated all 3 to 10.5.7.
Repaired permissions.
Turned off firewalls.
Renamed the Macbook (as they were both called "xxxxxx's Computer").
File sharing is on, on all computers.
Tried "connect to server" to see if it would reinitialize a search for new shared computers.
These have been appearing for a while in my shared column in Finder as 'PC Servers' - I'm aware they're duplicate references for my actual computers but how do I remove them?

I have never actually done file sharing with these computers, so I'm not sure why they are displaying here? Why do these display here? I come in contact with lots of people all day long and I do not see their computers in this list.

When I try to access a shared computer on my network, the Finder window closes as soon as I click on the computer I want to access. File sharing is turned on on the target computers, both iMacs, one is running Mavericks and the other is running Mountain Lion. The iMacs can access the MacBook Pro and each other without a problem. Firewall is not on on the iMac. Is there a setting I am missing

In the Finder sidebar under shared computers, we seem to be getting duplicates. Admin Mac (1), Admin Mac (2) (when it's the same computer). How do I clear out this list so that we don't have 13 Admin Mac's on our list?
I have gone through and turned off sharing preferences restarted computers and turned Sharing preferences back on. I now see the correct computer but can't get rid of the duplicates now.

I've googled and search here, and I just can't find the answer to this.
I renamed one of my computers at home. Now both instances of it show up in the Shared section of the finder sidebar and I can't remove the old one. When I do a Get Info, it shows as a PC Server, but I can't actually access anything on it. Is there any way to keep this from showing up?

I'm trying to find ways to get rid of the Windows XP operating system as a means of sharing some data on the network and thought I'd try and experiment in Linux.
I installed OpenSuSE v11.0 and gave it the name, "mediasrv" as the NetBIOS name. Well, the experiment didn't succeed and I rebooted Windows off of the old drive and everything is just fine with the exception that the "mediasrv" NetBIOS name and the Windows XP NetBIOS name BOTH show up in the finder.
Yeah, I know it doesn't hurt anything it just drives me crazy. So, how do I remove the "mediasrv" name from showing up in the finder?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just noticed that in my Finder window sidebar, under "Shared", I have a character called Thomson listed. I don't know any Thomson and I bought the machine, an MBA, brand new. However, I did have an engineer instal the machine in my apartment and can only assume he's the mysterious Thomson. Anyway, whoever he/she is, I don't want him/her on my machine as Shared & "connected as guest". The point is, I cannot find a way to delete Thomson!! Can anyone help? I've tried System Preferences>Security and Accounts and there's no trace of Thomson there. Right clicking on Thomson in the sidebar of Finder only gives me the option to Open and Get Info. Most annoying, this. There MUST be a way to delete a Sharing but totally unwanted guest....

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have been pondering building a LAN for a Computer System that is used for Photography Editing/Printing and Videography this will be for multiple MAC computers which will share a mass storage drive and accommodate a print server capable of addressing 6 Epson Stylus Pro printers with print expansion to 10 printers. The beginning network will consist of 2 iMACs, 3 MAC Pro's and 1 MAC Book. The Network server needs to be at least 2 TB with expansion capabilities. In addition, the Server must be able to address up to 8 MAC computers. I have been searching the WWW as well as various manufactures for information but after hours of searching and reading they all claim to be capable of doing what I desire. I am interested in feedback from MAC users who have experience in this area and have positive results. If you have built a similar system and can recommend the Hardware/Software that has functioned with your MAC equipment I would be interested in your results and recommendations. Finances are not an issue so going cheap is not my intent, speed, reliability and expandability are key factors.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I open finder and click network, I don't see my respective other Mac. The iMac doesn't show the Powerbook there, and the Powerbook doesn't show the iMac. Both machines list my XP machine though. I can go to "go connect to server" under finder and enter computer name or IP address, and it does connect to the other Mac. However, why isn't it just showing up under network? Yes, I do have file sharing on.

I'm aware of network storage devices which backup and share, but can I setup the same thing with an extra hard drive in my PC? Or perhaps an external hard drive?
