View 1 Replies View RelatedQuestion about MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011) with Intel HD Graphics 3000. I upgraded RAM with 16GB, and wonder if it is possible to allocate more then 512 MB of system memory for shared VRAM. Now system profiler shows 512 MB shared VRAM, the same like it was with 8 GB RAM before the RAM upgrade.
"About integrated video on Intel-based Macs" topic [URL] mentions MBPs with 8 GB of RAM only.
how to increase virtual memory what i have to do?

I am considering buying a Macbook Air (June 2012 13" with i7-3667U CPU and the 4000 HD on-chip GPU) as it fits most my requirements. I occasionally like to play games and it seems that this graphics processor should be enough, but the question is how much memory can it use from the main memory and if the maximum amount can be changed.
More specifially I am loking at the requirements of ANNO 2070 (as this is the kind of game I really like) and even though it has been known to perform ok with that GPU, the minimum requirements would be 512MB of video ram (on low or medium settings). The previous MBA was only able to use ~350MB of the main memory if I understand correctly.
1. What is the limit of memory the GPU can use form the main memory?
2. Is it user configurable under OSX?
3. Is it user configurable under Windows when bootcamping?
4. Is it "somehow" (unsupported software-only method) configurable?
5. Is the game ANNO 2070 playable under Windows (AFAIK using bootcamp is the only way to play it currently) on a new (June 2012) MBA?

Will increasing the memory of my laptop help my game run faster?
-Macbook 3,1
-Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
-L2 Cache: 4MB
-Memory: 2GB
-Bus Speed: 800 GHz
The only thing that loads extremely slow is the video game I play. Otherwise, I don't have any speed problems.
I own an iMac with 256mb of shared video memory and have been dying to find a way of making the computer use more of my 8gb of RAM for video memory than it currently is (specifically for an improved gaming performance).

Looking at MacBooks, iMacs and Mac minis with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, which share memory with the main system. I notice on all 2GB machines the graphics has 256MB of SDRAM and the machines with 4GB the graphics has 512MB. Does this mean if I bought a base model mac mini, with 1GB memory and 128MB SDRAM, increased it to 4GB of memory, I would have 512MB of shared video SDRAM?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed win 7 Home Premium, and I am being robbed of my ram because I can't change the shared video memory settings. Does anyone have a solution to this? I have the iMac with the ATI 4670 so I already have plenty of VRAM for what I do.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi have 4 gb of ram, and would like to increase the shared video memory in windows 7, that i am using via boot camp. i know you can do it using the bios, but because there is no bios, is there any program that emulates the bios for boot camp, or another solution to do this?
then, why does windows 7 read just 3 gb of ram, when i have 4?
A couple of months ago I was at the head office and connected to the in house Wifi. When I did, a bunch of shared drives or folders showed in my finder under "Shared". I figured no biggie, when I got away from the head office they'd go away. But they didn't. And I can't figure out how to get rid of them.See attached photo.

Don't want to spend a lot as I am on a fixed budget and also want to upgrade to Leopard as well.
View 1 Replies View Related I'm new to OS X and just had a quick question about the way that it uses memory.
I have the istat widget on my dashboard, and I've been monitoring the amount of free and used RAM. After I reboot the system, only about 20 percent of my memory is being used between the OS and the programs I normally use (adium, safari, itunes, etc.) Over the course of a couple days, the amount of used ram increases to about 50 percent, even though I'm just using the same programs. So, I'm just wondering how exactly the operating system deals with used and free RAM. Once the system uses ram for something, will that ram be reported as used until I reboot? Why does used ram continue to increase even though I'm doing the exact same things?
I'd just appreciate if someone could enlighten me on how the system uses RAM and whether I need to reboot every few days for optimal performance. I know it's still only using 50 percent (i have 4 gigs) - I'm not afraid of running out, I'm just wondering for my own knowledge.
My OWC RAM is working just fine, but I am growing increasingly concerned about the temperatures at which it runs. I have the 3.0 (120W) MacBook 2008 with 18 Gb RAM (4x4Gb + 2x1Gb apple stock). The RAM in memory module A2 & B2 is getting up to 80 Celsius without even much of a workout on the RAM. What's more, the MacPro fans are not increasing - right now the hottest module is at 76 Celsius and fans haven't increased at all (see screenshot below).
I have installed SMC fan control, which I understand is supposed to set the minimum fan speed, which I have set at 730 because my RAM was running hot even without any workout. How concerned should I be about this? Is this a) a defect in my mac pro b) a design flaw c) a problem with OWC memory, or d) is everything OK and I'm making a mountain out of a molehill?
is there a way to make a partition larger without reformatting it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been using my mac religiously on a daily basis for almost a year now. I have noticed that progressively the boot time and shut down time is getting longer and longer. And I understand as I install programs and use the laptop more, it's going to get slower and slower but right now the boot time and shut down time is more than I would expect.
For boot up, the only applications that open on login is Mail and Quicksilver.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the boot and shut down times?

I've managed to get most of my apps text sizes ok for me to see (though FF skews things up a bit), but I find my toolbar icons and text size to be a bit small for me.
Two main apps cause me grief. Mail and Office. I can't seem ti find anywhere where I can increase the size of the toolbar icons. In mail i can use Large icons, but that doesn't affect the toolbar. In Office (mainly Word/Excel) I can't seem to find anything at all.

I'm running osx 10.5 off a intel mac mini through a samsung syncmaster 920nw.the native resolution is 1440x900 60hz
i'm a designer, and often i find that i simply don't have enough screen space, is there any way that i can increase the resolution, display preferences don't give me that option, i've downloaded software called switchresx, but i can't seem to get the resolution right and also the software expires eventually.
I recently upped the RAM memory in my 2008 vintage MacBook Pro to 8GB. I have not seen a significant increase in speed and it rarely uses more than 3GB of memory. In fact in some instances it seems slower. How can I boost the performance and take advantage of using the increased RAM?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a iMac DV G3/500 (Special Edition) from summer 2000. Anyway, I am using Mac OS 10.2.8. Recently, my start up disk's memory has gone done from 1.2 GB available free space to 668MB (currently). I haven't saved anything on this disk so I can not understand why this memory has dissappeared. I have also had icons on the start up menu disappear. Could someone please tell me how I can restore the missing memory?
I have a Black MacBook (Early 2008). I think that I still have the factory standard RAM sticks (I bought the Mac used from a friend). I noticed today that I am running on only one gig of RAM even though I have two gigs of memory.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI know the issue of the MacBook speaker volume have been discussed elsewhere, but I was wondering if there are any system hacks/applications that can increase the maximum volume?
I don't really use the internal speakers for anything other than system sounds and listening to web-content -- flash videos, youtube, etc. (In other words, if I want to listen to iTunes or a DVD, I'll use headphones or eternal speakers).
The max volume is just *barely* loud enough unless there is absolutely no ambient sound in the room...
I was wondering if/where I could get a better screen for my 12.1" Powerbook... Better viewing angle, brighter, possibly glossy. OR is there a way to bump up the screen brightness by just putting more juice in it? I know it would hurt battery life, but while it's plugged in it wouldn't hurt.
